Law Enforcement Career

My husband would like to pursue a law enforcement career. He is particularly interested in going undercover or working in the K-9 Unit because he is excellent with dogs. I'm so excited and supportive of him, but we don't even know where to start. I've heard that getting a job like this is all about who you know. He would like to work where we currently live, but we are somewhat open to relocating eventually if need be. My husband didn't graduate with a law enforcement degree, but he has equivalent two years of studying law enforcement. He knows the basics, but just needs the training. Please help! Do you have any connections of people he could speak with to get into a career like this? Some people have suggested that he go back to school for law enforcement, but we would be struggling to have money for school right now. Others have told us that he doesn't need to go back to school because they will train him on all he needs to know in the police academy. Please help us so we know where to start! I'm all about helping my hubby find the career of his dreams. This has been a lifelong goal of his so any resources you could provide would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance!

I am sure it is different in each state. In the state where I live, you would begin to get your foot in the door by joining the police officer reserve and taking "paid call". Then when something opened, you would be the first person considered eligible. Then is when you might have to go to Police Training. I do not know how that works where you live, but that is what I understand from what I read in the newspaper.

Great! I had no idea about being on reserve, but what an excellent idea! Thanks so much for sharing that information. I will definitely look into it for Michigan. I'm sure they must do something like that.
