How can someone who LOVES food keep their weight down?

March 5, 2010 2:09pm CST
I love food and have a big appetite. Left to my own devices, I could easily eat as much as my husband does - and he's a big man who works in a physical job whereas I am in a sedentary job. At various times in my life I have started to gain weight and have had to cut back on my food to get back to my normal weight. I find it very hard. What really helped for me was upping my exercise. I bought a pedometer and now make sure I walk at least 10,000 steps a day. This seems to have stabilised my weight without me having to be on a permanent diet. What are your best tips for someone with a "healthy" appetite to keep their weight under control?

I can relate so well to what you are saying. My ex used to be apolled that I could eat as much as he did at times. I would work out in the yard along side him for hours and just be famished but if I ate as much as him he would be horrified. I doubt I will ever get back to my previous weight of 135 since I am 58 now and I like to eat. The best thing a person can do is eat small portions and get plenty of exercise. Cut out starches and breads as much as possible. Watch your intake of fats and use olive oil. I think another thing too is don't totally take away your favorite foods but eat them in moderation.

Thank you for your comment. I think the mechanism in my brain that tells me when I'm full up is damaged! I could carry on eating for ages and I only stop now because I don't want to gain weight if I can avoid it.

I also must keep active if I want to enjoy eating. When I was 18 ,I started cycling to work ,30 minutes each way and I could eat anything I likes. It continued until I got married and stopped work to have kids. Then it was much harder but I did work out on the floor in my front room when the kids were in bed. Now I run 3 times a week which has got me back to my old pre-kids weight and I use a jump rope 3 times a week in between. We can eat whatever we like within reason and I even have chocolate on Saturday but I know if I let my exercise stop for a week or two, I will notice the change quite quickly.

You're so right. When I was at school I was in several sports teams and was very active. When I left school I continued to eat the same amount but wasn't nearly so active - and that was the first time I started to gain weight.

One of the best tricks I have found recently is to use a smaller dinner plate for my meals. Smaller plate = smaller portions of food, yet I still feel that I have eaten a full meal. I can't take regular exercise though, my broken carcass won't let me :-( but smaller portions of foods, and having healthy snacks around have helped me to lose a little weight.

That's a good tip. I have a normal-sized dinner plate and it's usually full! I'll have a smaller and fill that up instead.

yeah.. but the one thing i found out about myself is that i don't stick to a regular workout schedule.. i tend to be lazy and start making lame excuses toskip my workout schedule and before you know it, i have pretty much said goodbye to it altogether...

You're right, ralphido. You have to be quite self-disciplined to keep to your exercise regime. I've found my pedometer is really useful as I keep going until I reach my target.

hi there, well this isn't easy, especially if someone is lazy, perhaps me, but i walk a lot so there is no problem, it's good you got a pedometer and now you could walk a lot, even i have a huge appetite for so many things and it is hard for me to resist food items, but i travel on foot each day and i guess that is what is helping me control my weight, if i am not going to move then i am going to gain weight that is for sure, 10,000 steps a day is good.

If I don't exercise I have to eat very little to maintain my weight. As I love my food, I exercise a lot so I can eat more!

some how,its true sedentary life style, puts on weight, than the strata engaged in physical grind,Its depends upon ones body constitution also, less gut harmone in the body makes one hungry more than a normal, what I Think some keep on eating, have good diet, but are not fat, but, when if some has a tedency to be fat,and wants to have good food also, then, exercies, exclusively ment for squeezing the fat, are there, walk, jogging, for some time have a diet control, can also use sauna belts,I was also fat,but was suggested, to use one,by the physician, whick worked, but again, one has to look for one own self, for a check, and not to be obese, and reduced 10 kg,what do you say?

I think exercise is more effective than a drastic diet. Diets work in the short term but most people put the weight back on again. Exercise speeds up the metabolism and if you can eat normally too you don't feel so deprived.

Like everyone else said it's about portion control I guess. I myself have a problem because I love eating as well. I have a huge sweet tooth so that's always a problem for me and it takes a lot of willpower from me to not eat candy but alas there are times when it's impossible like right now. But I do try and exercise as much as possible because I do love to exercise and I try and control how much I eat. But like I said there are times when I can't control it at all. My advice would be to exercise as much as possible and to eat in small portions. Good luck!

My best tips are to: 1.eat more foods that are low in fat content or are fat-free and 2.to exercise as much as possible. Have a great day!

Eat healthy. Lettuce is a "free" food on the glycemic index. That means it doesn't raise your blood sugar very much. It has a lot of water and very little calories. This is why salad (before the dressing) is good for you and good for dieting. Eating foods that have a similar profile will be important because you can eat more or as much but take in less calories and sugars. High fiber, low-fat and low-carb is the way to go. Lay off meat if you really want to lose and limit fish and poultry (25% of the meal). Drink plenty of water and get a decent amount of sleep.

That's great- its very good for your body to get excercise everyday (and not just from a weight point of view). I am a food lover as well, and have struggled at time with my weight. I would suggest to keep walking like you are, make sure to get enough B vitamins from you food/supplements (some B vitamins help convert/metabolize food into energy) and use smaller plates, this way it will fell like you are eating more when you are actually taking in less calories.

Eat in moderation and exercise. If you cannot exercise then move around a lot like run instead of walking. While waiting for the elevator, raise legs or do squats. Lift weights while watching tv or talking on the phone. Move a lot as much as possible to burn calories

I'm like you louisefrank. I love my food too and I have been know to out eat a bigger man than me! The key is to keep a good balance and to try and control your food intake. it could be that your metabolism would cope better with eating little and often rather than just sticking to three larger meals per day. Exercise is also going to burn off the extra calories, so make sure you keep that up too.

That's good advice. I know that if I miss my breakfast, by the evening I'm really hungry and then tend to overeat. More frequent, smaller meals would be a good change to make.

Eating is number one reason why we love our lives, we eat to survive and we eat to make us feel better. But sometimes people are abusing it because they just want to eat but the truth they are not thinking of what will happen to their health. I can say that by eating normal will keep our good weight. Just check what kind of food that you are eating and also check the nutritional facts. Just eat food that are low in fat and calories to lose big weight.

You could easily keep your weight undercontrol by eating healthy. You can also start drinking a glass of water 30 mins before each meal it will make you feel more full so you dont eat as much. Try eating more fruits and veggies they are really good for you and could help you stay healthy and keep your weight down.
