Recently i made corn on the cob for dinner. My son loves it but may not get it much any more
next thing i know he gives coco the cob and she loves it. He knows how iam about her but sometimes i guess he forgets. I told him dont be giving her things till I look it up. So I followed her around trying to get it while she hid under things and growled at me. Son cracked up about it.
I got the camera took the pic, then offered her a special treat sos she'd drop it and thats how I got it from her. Sure enough when I looked it up online it said NO corn cobs. they chew peices off and could get an obstruction in their intestines.
so see, I told him again..never give her things without we know. I know people think Im just to worrisome about her, but shes my baby now and vet bills are tough these days. Some time ago, I was also told some dogs are allergic to corn. shes been chewing feet again and they told me to much of the prednesone is hard on their kidneys. so, one vet told me give her just 1/2 of a Benedryle (childrens) cause she a small dog and that would rest her. which I do at times and it knocks her out and she gets some pretty good sleep..(and myself also)LOL! have you heard about any of this? Do you have any other advice other then, chocolate, grapes, avacodo, all of which I now know. oh yes, and NO bones of course.

I didn't know about corn cobs but I would think that they would be bad and anyone would be able to know that! However, I used to feed my dog grapes because he loved them so much--imagine my surprise to read that list a few months ago!
I hear you about the Benedryl. I buy Equate diphenhydramine, which is all Benedryl is, mainly for when I have trouble sleeping. I did give Cookie some when she suffered some bruising and blood pooling when Gus was playing with her and slammed into her chest. She had to have a drain and everything and my pocketbook screamed loudly! She's worth every penny, though, I know how you feel about dear little Coconut!

yes, sometimes I seem to have an inside intuition about these things. i just knew it wasnt good for her. its almost like when the human babies were little. dont even have to be told, but, i had to prove it to son by looking it up

Avocado is bad for them? Didn't know. I have given my cat corn before(well actually she grabbed it and eat it)..but usually the cat will eat the nibblets off and leave the cob alone..not sure about the dog though. Well, we have to take care of those we love if we don't no one will.

well, corn is a major ingredient of most dog (and cat) foods
Some dogs (and cats) can be allergic to it - I know I am...
My roomie's folk's dog is allergic to chicken
My sister had 4 dogs at one point. One was allergic to corn (so she got lamb and rice food), another allergic to rice (so she got chicken and corn food) so they couldn't eat each others food...
I tell ya, tho, if you look stuff up on the internet its bound to tell you not to feed them anything in the end if you avoid all the stuff they tell you....

I was going to mention that, as I know corn is one of the main ingredients in dog food. My dog only eats Lamb and Rice, too. Her favourite. I just kept trying different types until I found the one she wanted.

Don't think so. It can be used to rid them of fleas, actually.

a very small amount now and then i think. but if they get lots over a short period the toxin dont have time to leave their system and adds up till theirs trouble. thats what i read.

Hi bunnybon7,
I didn't know that dogs are not allowed to eat corn on the cobs, I supppose it makes sense as the husk can get stuck inside,l havent got any dogs, just cats.

I have never been without even 1 cat for any length of time, even if I lived in an apt and even if they weren't allowed. Dogs needed to be taken outside, whereas the cats have their litterbox, so I preferred cats and know them well.
We got a Walker Hound X Beagle once. He ATE EVERYTHING IN SIGHT! We took him ice fishing with us once, and we used to throw the perch outside the hut, so when we were done, we would gather them up, take them home and clean and eat them. He thought we were throwing them out for him. Apparently they have a HUGE gullet and can swallow everything, bones and all, without any problems. He ate a whole perch, and promtly threw it all up, and then, ate it again. GROSSSS!

I am mostly a cat person, too. I only have 1 outside farm dog. Never comes in the house. 2 house cats, 3 barn cats and the kittens they produce every year that I have to give away.

i was the mainly cat lady for years. when the kids were growing up we had more cats then anything. but, the boys would bring home a puppy now and then that no one knew how to potty train
so they always got given away. i only got to be a dog person after i met my late hubby. But ive always loved every kind of animal..except SNAKES..

Once in a while, usually during the winter, I get some beef marrow bones for Tukay and Boomer. Those are pretty hard to splinter, even for big dogs. After the marrow is gone, they loose interest in them pretty fast. The fat in the marrow helps a lot with the dry skin they get in the winter.
Both of our dogs like corn, in small quantities, and have never had a problem. Neither have ever shown any interest in the cob though. Good thing, because I wouldn't have thought about the choking hazard. Thanks for the warning.

So cute! How do you get her to sit for a picture? I can't get Tukay to do that. My vet told me that giving non-splintering bones (like the beef marrow) helps their teeth by scraping off any plaque. Another thing she likes for a treat is rice cakes. They're low calorie and keep her busy for...oh...a minute or so.

Hi Bunny
Gissi does not get corn either but he does like raw Cabbage
I am also very careful what I give him he does get his chewy Bones that I buy from the Pet shop
The main thing is that you watch her weight because if she gets to much weight on her that will affect her heart eventually
As you know my Gissi is a little poorly dog with his Heart Murmur, Heart enlarged and gets water on the Lungs, now I do pay a lot for the little Man on Vet fees as over the past few weeks he has been very poorly but he is worth it as long as I can have him with me for a long time
From when I first got Gissi from the Kennels 4 years ago I knew something was not right with, but the Vets I took him to said no he is fine, then 2 Years go I took to this Vet he is with now and they then found out what is wrong with the little Man
So never feel bad feeling protective and fussy with your little Coco as I do with Gissi to
Like you say they are our Babies

No onions. That seems like common sense to me. But about ten years ago when I had a different dog than Sherlock, my sister was eating pizza with us (my family). She picked off the onions on her pizza. I left the room, and when I came back, she had let my dog eat the onions off of her plate! I got so mad because I knew onions were dangerous. I took him to the vet of course. It cost me a pretty penny. My sister is smart, but that day she lacked common sense!

well im not sure what it does. i guess agitates their stomache? maybe its just the added toxins. yes, they all say no onions. @Hatley (163772)

hi bunnybon your girl is really so cute wow. Yes I can see why the vet would say that too. I did know that chocolate contains a substance that is really bad for dogs and I believe for cats too. I did not know about
grapes or avocados though. so I have learned something today. which is always good to do. I too take Benadryl at night for allergies and it does work as a sort of sleeping pill for me. I was just thinking maybe its the seeds in the grapes, or could small dogs choke on the grape? its an idea any way. I remember my mom looking askance at me when I stopped her from giving bones to my dog. used to be everyone did that b ut the poor dogs often got pieces of sharp bones stuck in their intestines too.

Well, that is good to know. We used to let our cats eat the cobs all the time. Ofcourse we don't have corn on the corn alot. I know that cats should be kept away from plants because some are poisonous. I am not real finicky so I don't check on everything. I think common sense goes a long way in this. I could send you links to articles about what's in the pet food now days that would uncurl your pubbies! Hahaha. Some friends on Facebook are very into this sort of thing.

Yes, Rachel Ray! I am terrible at remembering names. This food is supposed to be all natural and with no by products and all proceeds go toward helping animals. As far as allergies and skin these are taken care of through good nutrition.

We try not to give our dogs any table food because it is hard to know what is and what isn't safe for them. However, this doesn't mean that our dogs never get into something that they aren't supposed to have because they do. The most scary thing that my dog has had recently was a bone that I had thrown in the trash, she ended up cleaning the bone completely, and thankfully it wasn't a chicken bone (I know that these are the worst for dogs to have because they are easy to break apart and they are also easy to swallow). I am happy to say that my Michela is still okay after the bone ordeal.

oh yes!! thats very scarey. I bout had a heart attack when sons ex gave her dog and mine one of those little round ham bones. what an idiot. she said they cant chew them up, but she dont know coco. she can chew almost anything up
we try not to give her table food but we have no table and chairs yet so eat on trays and our laps
its hard to resist. sons the worst about it. @iamamommy (163)

I have giving my small dog corn on the cob before and nothing happened he loved it tho, he is also a small dog, he weighs about 7 pounds. And we also gave him little pieces of chocolate bars and nothing happened, i think you are aloud to give dogs that kind of stuff sometimes but not alot. My grandmother has a pug and she feeds him grapes all the time and nothing has ever happened to him except, he is really fat. I have never heard of avacodos being bad for a dog. But i would call the vet to ask them if all that is safe, i gave that stuff to my dog and nothing happened to him like i said so it must be safe.

well, from what ive read, its a toxin in some of these things like grapes, etc. that builds up over time and doesnt just kill them right then. also, maybe your dog has just not chewed a peace of the cob off and swallowed it or else it passed. i just dont like to take the chance. i dont want her to die just because she enjoys something. its like babies. they dont know some things are not good for them, so you dont just let them do it because they like it and take that chance, right?
