A Santa Monica Restaurant Is Caught Using Whale Meat For Their Sushi

I've never in my life ever had sushi, just don't like the idea of eating raw fish of any kind despite the claim that proper preparation kills any bacteria. Well I just heard this last night that many restaurants in general that serve sushi use, whale meat, that's right whale meat, and these whales are "harvested" in Japan. However, one Santa Monica restaurant called Hump, not only was making sushi out of whale meat, but using whale meat from the highly endangered Sei Whale from Japanese waters...there are only about 500 of these whales left in existence. How did they get caught? By none other than the film crew of the Academy Award winning documentary The Cove, that brought awareness of the Dolphin slaughter that goes on each year in Japan, and had used an undercover method of catching how the Sei Whale meat was being used for sushi Here's an excerpt from an article I found: On Feb. 28, just a week before the filmmakers stood on the stage at the Oscars to accept their award, two animal activist associates wearing cameras and microphones sat down at the Hump and ordered a session of omakase, a sushi meal for which the chef picks all the dishes. Sure enough, the video clearly shows them being served thick, pink slices of meat — which the waitress unambiguously describes as "whale." After feigning interest and covertly stashing the meat in Ziploc bags, the activists walked out with their evidence. Samples were then sent to the Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University, confirming that the meat was indeed from a whale. Worse yet, DNA from the samples indicated more specifically that the animal was a Sei whale, an endangered species. "I’ve been doing this for years," said professor Scott Baker, who performed the tests. "I was pretty shocked." The article continues to say that one of the chefs is now charged with illegally serving this meat from an endangered species of whale and is to be fined $200,000 and can face at least a year in jail. What is with people though? Isn't having sushi made with non-endangered species of fish enough to satisfy people, without using ANY whale meat whether endangered or not? I don't know I just find this really sickening that people have to resort to using meats from endangered species of animals...and worse yet, the customers who eat such foods. Oh and don't get me going on the issue of shark fin soup that is a specialty in Japan, where the fins of sharks are cut off from LIVE sharks and the sharks left to die : http://green.yahoo.com/blog/guest_bloggers/25/cove-filmmakers-expose-l-a-restaurant-serving-whale-sushi-during-oscars.html http://green.yahoo.com/blog/guest_bloggers/25/cove-filmmakers-expose-l-a-restaurant-serving-whale-sushi-during-oscars.html

I read about that. Reminds me of you talking about all the calls you got from a certain ethnic type of food restaurants inquiring about your excess of cats.

I can't imagine anyone wanting to eat whale meat. Let alone an endangered species of whale. I certainly can't imagine eating it or anyother type of fish raw. UGH!! Shark fin soup sounds disgusting also. Is there any laws about cutting the shark fins off?

There should be! Maybe other countries don't have animal activist groups like we do in the US.

The people are probably aware that it is whale meat, but probably not what kind and certainly not from an endangered whale

I actually saw that on my local news a couple of nights ago, since I do like in that area, and was shocked. I like sushi, but the thought of eating whale me makes me wanna gag. I am glad they caught them and I hope they throw the book at them. It might be that the customers don't know what they are being served. I can't stand the shark thing either, I do happen to like shark when its prepared properly, but I think it is such a waste to kill a shark for its fine. Its totally destroying the population because sharks are top predators and it takes a long time for them to reproduce. We need to treat the animals in our world with respect or we will find ourselves alone on this planet.

It kind of makes you wonder how many other restaurants that serve sushi are using not only whale meat, but whale meat of this endangered whale. Yes and it is a waste when we humans kill animals just for one part of it, like the sharks just for the fins, or even the whole fur issue...killing animals just for their fur and the seal hunts or I should say slaughter is going to occur soon

OMG!!!! I have never tried raw fish either. I gag if my salmon isn't fully cooked. Ugh! This is horrible. Just about the time I figure, okay, this is surely as bad as it could possibly get here comes another one. I just happened to be reading some messages I got on FB about a military man who threw a little puppy over a cliff and a guy that was beating a dog hanging on a fence. I just can't believe that people can be so hopelessly discusting and uncaring. I just don't understand what people are thinking. Or, better yet, why aren't they thinking?! Making the almighty dollar has made people become the biggest idiots. It is simply remarkable.

Yes I know about that guy that was beating a dog on the fence...it's big news over on FB. I hear so much about different abuses of animals over there that sometimes I have to walk away from it a bit otherwise get depressed as hell

That is absolutely deplorable! They should throw that guy under the jail! I hunt, fish, and LOVE sushi & ceviche. I'm also a conservationist. I wish I could say I was surprised, but unfortunately there is a market for black market foods. I'm surprised someone was selling it through their restaurant, especially here in the states. It's problematic because as people continue to support this market it will continue to exist. Shark fin soup is another sore spot for me as well. It's not the dish. It's the harvest method. It would be better if all of the shark was utilized. I see no point in throwing a finless shark back just to drown. I hadn't heard about this story yet. Thanks for bringing it up.

I can't see the point in cutting off just the fin of a shark and throw the rest of the shark back into the water either...like you if you're going to kill any animal at least use the whole animal not just part of it

I think I am vegetarian for a reason. I do my own, veggie sushi and it tastes great. The whole story is making me very upset. I wish others will take an action and expose places that are not compliance with international regulations. And people say that animals are brutal. Who is brutal here? Yes, sharks are the other issue, sick enough...

Hi pyewacket. I believe when there is a market there are going to be providers. People do all sorts of jobs even illegal ones to get money. When there is an offer there will still remain an supplier. I believe in educating more the general public. if the demand subsides, fishermen will stop catching whale for meat. I don't like sushi either. I wont' eat raw fish.

Makes one wonder what other endangered animals are caught for food consumption for people--
13 Mar 10
So much for all the promises of whale slaughter *in the name of research* and even worse that it should be from one of the most endangered species. I think it's deplorable that these lovely creatures should end up on a dinner plate in a fancy restaurant anyway, but that people still pay over the top prices for such meals

It's a shame that people are often the cause of the problem when they want to eat something "exotic" just because they have the money for it...if there wasn't some kind of demand for it, it wouldn't be happening

animals on the endagered lists are on the lists so they arent killed off into extinction.. common knowledge obviously, so using ANY endangered animals as food is just simply wrong. but using whale meat, any other meat, from non endangered species i really dont see a problem with.

I don't have a problem eating meat from non-endangered animals either but some I would never consider eating....years and years ago there used to be these exotic type restaurants here in NYC area that served things like Lion or rhino steaks...uh, think I'll pass on that--like is that really necessary? :-(

Hey pye! I am so happy that these people won the award so that they were able to expose this disgusting tradition of using this endangered species for the pleasure of patrons eating Sushi! It makes me so sick to know that this has been going on for as long as it has and if this film hadn't been made that it would have continued! I am thankful to these people for exposing these slaughterers for what they are! And I hope that this will help stop this disgusting trade! And the same for for the shark fin disasters! I hope that this will make people aware of what is being done to these poor sweet mammals that have no voice of their own just like many of the billions of other creatures who are tortured every single day! I just hope that some day people will have to pay a serious price for what they do to animals! Torture of animals should be punished by torture of humans! I believe in an eye for an eye and I wish humans that hurt animals could and would be tortured in the SAME WAY THAT THEY TORTURED THE ANIMALS! Maybe then they would realize what they did was WRONG!!!!!

You know the real problem is that unfortunately not too many people are really aware of what is going on in the world and how we humans are killing all kinds of animals just for greed and profit...I've known about the whale/dolphin killings for a long time, same with the seal hunts (which are to start soon again) and seen pretty graphic videos on YouTube and on the HSUS website---but hopefully The Cove movie will open more people to awareness of what is going on--did you know that often the filmmakers were threatened and were endangering their own lives to expose the whale/dolphin killings?

People are so stupid and extremely selfish to do something like that! To use endangered whale meat is insane and stupid! I like to thank the Japaneses for being heartless going and slatering the Sei whale because they love to eat whale! I can't beleive the Japanese can get away with this in the first place! Somehow that needs to stop! If not these Sei WHales will be gone forever in no time at all! On shark fin soup,I saw on "Shark Week" on Discovery how they "harvest" the fins and just throw the sharks back in the water! That is a whole another topic!

I'm not a BIG fan of sushi, but I do eat it on occasion. But endangered species meat, whale or other -- fine the culprits big time.

Hi, pye... Thanks for the add, by the way. I've never, ever had sushi! No way! I don't like raw fish nor meat. I am not surprised that that restaurant is using whale meat. There are so many other countries who loves to kill those kinds of mammal. In my county, the authorities caught one province because they are killing the whales and dolphins. I was so sad whenever I hear something like this =(

I've never had sushi either, but did have ceviche a few times many years ago and is a Spanish type raw fish meal..was actually good--the marinading is supposed to "cook" it and kill any bacteria but wouldn't have it now though. I just can't understand why any country though needs to kill dolphins and whales though..especially as food for humans:-(

I've never had sushi either, the very thought of it makes me feel sick and I have a very sensitive stomach when it comes to things like that! I understand many people love it, and that's fine, but why would they ever want to eat meat from an endangered species is right! I think the chef should be fined more than $200,000 and should serve more than a year in jail! It's disgusting and indefensible. Annie

hi pyewacket thats is just dreadful killing endangered species of whales and using any whale meat as far as that goes. shame on the greedy Japanese. this is sickening to me. I have eaten sushi but it was fish from California water caught fresh that morning, and yes the way they fix it it contains no bacteria, and I was surprised to find I really liked it too. but its really expensive even here and we rarely eat it because of that. but whale meat, thats so sad, and those dolphins I read about their slaughter and it made me weep.why do that to those lovely intelligent creatures? they harm no one. why pye do we slaughter endangered species and thus upset the delicate balance of nature? greed, stupidity, or what? this so angry, but what can I do about it? I can sort of understand the eskimos eating whale meat as that was what they had to live on.

I've never had sushi, but years and years ago when my folks and I went to Florida we would often have cerviche, which is a Spanish type dish using raw fish, but usually something like flounder (or any whitefish) and yes it WAS delicious. It's not only dolphin slaughter in Japan but also in Norway--I started watching one video about that and even I couldn't watch the whole thing--that's how bad it was. Yes, dolphins are considered very intelligent animals. As for why people in general slaughter such animals, yes greed, profit...the seal hunt is to start soon too
