Hai friends, Happy Ugadi festival. This is New year for us. We prepare a sweet semi liquid dish on this day and make poli which is called obbattu in kannada which is also a sweet made out of maida, jaggery and cereal or maida, jaggery and coconut. The semi liquid pachadi consists of jaggery, mango and neem flowers which symbolise all the states of life like happiness, sorrow etc. What is your New Year festival and what dishes do you make on that day?

Hi Buchi, wish you and all our friends here from your country a happy and prosperous Ugadi Festival. Though I don't the kind of foods you mentioned above here I still believe they are yummy and attractive in their looks and savors respectively. And I love all kind of dishes and desserts prepared from coconut. Coconut milk really gives its unique fragrance and makes food tasting yummy Our chinese new year or the spring festival just over about a month back. We do prepare many delicious cookies a week or a couple of weeks before the festival. There are lots of them which believe would bring good fortune to us if they are served in the beginning of the year. Fish is one of the essential dish served on the new year eve dinner. Happy and prosperous Ugadi Festival

Hi Buchi, it was really annoying yesterday when seeing a page popped up saying that it was error when doing the posting. I did it in starbuck coffee outlet during my vacation. I didn't have the mood to retype everything again for my hubby hastened me to leave for the another nearby tourist site. What even worse that if I send it today it will be a belated festival wishing right? Oh it's great that I see the response I sent yesterday when visiting this discussion Yeah, the one which was said sending unsuccessfully. It's out of my expectation. It' is a great pleasure to me the sad experience has turned to be an amazing delight I believe you and yours had had a wonderful and happy festival yesterday for sure

I thank for the error that popped up while you were making the post. No do not look at me like that. Because of that error, I got two posts from you and I felt you visited my house twice to wish me for the festival. Is it not a jackpot for me? How I wish you really come to my house and I will make many coconut dishes and serve you especially coconut obbattu. I did not know when was your New Year. I should have wished you. However I am sending my belated Happy New Year wishes to you. Actually I am a Tamilian. Our Tamil New Year's Day is on April 14. You still have enough time to plan a trip to my house for the festival. Come with your family.

So your Ugadhi went on well and you enjoyed with new clothes. I like festivals because all family members will be busy in doing something or other for the festival like helping me in cutting vegetables, making cardamom powder for payasam, split cashew nuts, tie mango leaves for the main entrance etc. and finally sitting together to eat food with chit chatting and joking.

Hi Buchi-Bulla, The same to you too. Here also we have it today called Yugadi or more commonly by Maharashtrians as Gudi Padva which is an important date for a New Year. Though my family roots are basically from Karnataka/Kerala border and now last 2 generations settled in Mumbai we celebrate by both the methods- and in both preparing a good meal and lots of sweets are equally of importance; here the Maharashtrians normally prepare Sweet -rice, and other liquid & semi-liquid sweets like Shrikhand or other milk based sweets and they are known by different names- basically all the sweets are the same I think.

Your response made me feel as though I have come to your house and ate all those mouth watering items. We make Holige, ugadhi pachadi, avial, vada and payasam. If time permits I make kosumbari and curd pachadi. You know appalam, sandige etc. are must on festivals.

Ugadi is the NEW YEAR day for Telugu people. This is really a wonderful festival.Every individual celebrates this festival in their own style. Some wear new clothes ,purchase items of their choice so as to remember for ever that they have purchased this item on Ugadi day. Today is the day when we prepare Polaelu (Sweet chapati with jaggary, cashew nuts, coconut powder etc)and the ever loving Pacchadi ( a combination of Jaggery, tamarind liquid, coconut grated pieces, neem flowers, mango pieces grepped) A wonderful and soothing drink. It all seems wonderful for foreigners but if they taste once hope, they will frequently visit India to enjoy these tasteful items.

Hai I learnt new word from you that ugadhi is called Bedi Bua in Maharashtra. We do not buy new dress for Ugadhi. Only for Deepavali we buy new dress. We make ugadhi pachadi and obbattu which is called poli in tamil and holige in kannada.

Well, I am a Tamilian! So we do not celebrate UGADHI in a grand manner! Ugadi is meant for the Telugus! Also, our Telugu neighbors are having a good time today! They have sent us sweets and savories and have invited us for the pooja and rituals and for the Lunch of course! Also, we will be celebrating our New Year on 14th April - Chaitra month 1st day!

Even I am a Tamilian friend. Our ugadhi which we call varshappirappu, falls on April 14. Earlier when my children were small, I used to celebrate Telugu Ugadhi too as all their friends had festival at home and I did not want to disappoint my children. But now some are married and gone out and I too feel tired to do extra work, hence I did not make anything for Telugu Ugadhi.
