Just recently expired medicines will not kill you. Not yet expired medicines are more dangerous than expired medicines, especially if there's an error with the dosage and if you take a medicine that is not intended for your illness or contraindicated. The potency and efficacy of expired medicines declines after the expiry date, so usually it turn harmless.

Well, medicines are not the ones that I check for expiry date before purchasing them. They usually have long storage times, so I am not bothered by that. I usually check "best before" when buying food products, like milk, bread or meat. These are the ones that can't be stored for a very long time, so they may be running out of expiry date the next day after buying them.

Hi siliguri,
Earlier I didn’t have the habit of checking the expiry dates of products including food items, medicines etc. But my hubby is very particular on this and if he find out the product is old then he may insist me to change the same. So now I am very cautious as I don’t want to go to the shop again for an exchange
. Checking the details will be very helpful for us and healthy too.

I always look at expiry date, when I am buying food stuff and medicines. It is highly risky not to look at the expiry date in both these cases. Funny that I saw this discussion today. I just got back from shopping and had to let go of pasta sauce as that was really old stock.

yes everything that i buy, i check it. for foodstuff, i check its freshness, its contents and ingredients and the expiry date. for canned food, i also check the condition of the can or packaging. for clothings, i check the tailoring, the seams, buttons etc. in short, everything i buy must be in good shape or up to expectation. or else dont buy. if i am in a hurry, i dont shop. i take time to buy, check and pay.

Yes, I believe it's a very important thing to do when your are shopping. You don't want to end up being in a hospital just because you're too busy to look at the dates

As a pharmacist, I'd like to share this: the truth is, expired medicines are not the harmful as we expect it to be especially if the medicine expired not too long ago. For example, if the expiry date is March, 2010, you can still take the medicine by April, 2010. But June, 2010 or beyond, not advisable. Just recently expired medicines are not that harmful. Maybe just a reduced efficacy. The efficacy of the medicine will usually start to decline after the expiry date. We cannot draw a graph here to illustrate the decline, but you can imagine it. I hope this info helps.

Yap! I always see the expired dated before I use it, I find that expired medicine can be toxic to our body. We want to heal when we take medicine not more sicks because poisoning by medicine we take. I ever heard from my friend that her friend who take expired medicine end up paralyze, thats scary don't you think so?
They say the composition of certain expired medicine can be unstable and can cause various effect to our body, because every medicine is chemical product with certain formula that design to reach certain effect.

Always check the expiry date on any medication, the date is there for a good reason and you should always be aware that out of date medication can, in fact, be bad for you

Yes, i always see the expiry date before i purchase any food or medicine. I think this is a good practice, since it can protect us from getting poisoned by the product. It's truth that we must be careful when purchase medicine. Because medicine that had expired date will give more harm to the person who use or drink it. So, always remember to check the expiry date before purchase any product.

Yes, the expiration date is one label that I do pay attention to when I am purchasing things. That date is not a suggestion, rather a rule and the product is not going to be good for much longer than that date. Maybe a few days at most and that is if you are lucky. Most times, when the product says its going to expire on a date, then you better believe that they will expire on that date.
So when I go shopping, I look for expiration dates that give me some leeway. The latest date that I can find. That way, I can keep the product for as long as possible. So I do not have to purchase a product too soon if I do not use it straight away. It is a good idea to find something with several weeks in advance to put back for later.

hell0 siligiru! yep, I always check the expire date of all the products that I buy, especially of the foodstuff, because sometimes I buy things, which expire in 1 or 2 days and if I don't check the date and don't eat it till then, i can poison myself, which won't be that pleasant for me :)
I even check the expire date of the deodorants and the face cremes that I buy!
