Sometimes the Devil in me wants out!

Spain
March 17, 2010 3:48am CST
A couple of days ago, I was at the market with friends. On one of the stalls, the young Spanish stall holder was reaching something from a high rail for someone. He had to take down the price card, which was held in place with a long string, and he put it around his neck while he served the customer. So this handsome Spaniard is there with a 3 Euro price tag on him, and I just couldn't resist. I got out 3 euros, went up to him, and in my best Spanish said, 'What a bargain - here's my money. Are you coming with me now, or shall I come back when the market closes?' He laughed, took my arm, and we walked up the aisle, to hoots of laughter from the locals who'd heard the exchange. Then he gave me my money back and told me I could have him for nothing, as I was a beautiful lady. (I'm not really, but it made my day) My friends, who don't speak Spanish, but got the gist of what I said, couldn't believe I'd done it. I told them, sometimes, I have to let the Devil out, and this was one of them. There was no harm done, and a lot of people had a laugh and probably went home to tell their families about this mad Englishwoman, who was okay because she speaks Spanish and she likes a bit of fun. What about you? Do you ever let your Devil out? What happens when you do?

Hi Sandra! What kind of devil was that?! It did not do evil things! Instead what it did was fun, and had made other people laugh. I wouldn't call that a devil. A jester maybe, but certainly not a devil! I have my own devil inside of me. And I sometimes let it out when I plot not-so-nice things to people who do me wrong!

Me as a jester - In Erding, near Munich, during the Oktoberfest.
Hello, Bounce. A jester instead of a devil, eh? As it happens, I do have a picture of me as a jester. I'll attempt to attach it to the response - fingers and everything else crossed! Yes, it was great fun, and it did cause some merriment in the market. I an be the other sort of devil as well - I'm a very good friend, but I make a bad enemy.

That does sound like fun, Sandra. My devil only comes out when I've had too much to drink. I know I embarassed my daughter on a weekend to New York when I'd had a few delicious cocktails in the basement of the Rockefeller Centre. I sang around Macy's afterwards and fell over taking a rail of dresses with me.

Hello, Jean. Yes, I get a bit devillish after a vodka or three as well. I'd love to have seen you in Macy's, singing and rearranging the dress display. I bet the New Yorkers wondered what had hit them. Does your daughter still speak to you after that, or is she glad her Mum is so much fun?
@jakill (835)

Definitely the latter. We had one of our friends with us and every time they get togehter now they have a laugh at my expense.

Hello, Canellita. I might have known the writer would be working out a scenario around it. I must think about that. Wonder if I ould get Ewan McGregor to play the stall keeper?

Fortune favors the bold! That is just one of those things that happen to adventurous travelers. I could definitely see a screenplay in that. Obviously, a chic flick. With stories like that we'll never get Canellita back from Spain. America will miss you:)

What a lovely lady you are Sandra. Great story too, thanks for sharing it with us. I think (because you speak Spanish) you are well-respected in the area anyway so you got away with it lol. Actually, I'm kinda jealous! Haha!! I probably have done something similar but I can't remember off-hand...I'll let you know!

Hello, Janey. Thanks for the compliment. The Spanish are great fun, and they do appreciate it when people at least try to speak the language, instead of assuming, as many expats do, that everyone should speak English. Report back when you remember.

Hello, again, Janey. Yes, my kids have inherited my sense of the absurd, as you seem to have done from your mum. She sounds great fun - even if she 'never gets drunk.' I love to dane as well. Are you sure we're not twins who were separated at birth?

That made me laugh, the comment about it being your kids' jobs to be thrown out of boozers lol. As for the hair ornaments, I was more gutted about breaking those(or should I say the Prize Fighter breaking those) than being thrown out of a club I hated anyway...I could go back the next week, no problem! My Mum is one of those that "never gets drunk." Yeh, right! I once made a point of telling her that she dropped her chips outside that had just been bought by Dad after a jolly good night out..what did she do? Pick them up off the floor! Hahaha! She HATES being reminded of this but it has to be pointed out that she's not perfect...and if she hears good music anywhere (my wedding do a good example) you can't get her off the dance-floor. I am EXACTLY like that myself. Many a time I have cleared the place because I need...er...the whole floor to "perform" lol.

Wow that really took some guts. I'd probably end up melting away in the sun before I even think of approaching someone and flirt with him. But I sometimes could get a little impish, specially if I'm bored. A lot of my friends say that I have the humor of a dirty old man or a street smart wench. Which is quite funny since I'm a girl in her twenties with not much experience. I sometimes accidentally brush people's comfort levels when I'm in this mood. I think that's because were a conservative lot and I tend to read books that was not exactly for kids back then. I remember reading Jean Auels books back when I was 10 or so and I laughed when I learned it still is in Playboy's must read novels. Although I read it because I loved horses and thinking about old civilizations.

Hello, France. Yes, I'm like that myself, and I do like to flirt, so when I'm in the right mood, everybody better look out. Nothing wrong with being street smart, as long as you know what's appropriate and when, which I'm sure you do. Reading Playboy's recommended list, eh? Must look out for that one - it sounds racy.
• Philippines
17 Mar 10
Not that racy at all. Most of the books about being in a primal world so the descriptions of the act itself is quite uninhibited. The writer took about 10 years to research each book. A good read of you're into neolithic materials. It's quite a light reading but you get to learn so much more.

I think it is good and even healthy to let the devil out (very well put, by the way!). I do it sometimes, too. But I can't relate those examples here LOL... It is good and healthy. The only danger is, getting the matters out of control.. And it may happen! For example, in your case, what if the Spaniard hasn't been decent enough to take it as a joke? I am sorry, if I sound stupid, but I am just stating one of the possibilities. It would have led to unfortunate and unhappy circumstances... So it is our duty to make sure that we don't cross the safty line... :) Be safe!!! And have loads of fun... :)

I am sure there is a lot of thrill in going close to that line... :) I like this too, weighing things before diving in.. Very well put!! Well... Fun is part of life and pracical jokes are very much enjoyable.. Yours was such a practical joke! Have fun!!!

Hello, Mr_Pearl. You don't sound stupid at all, and I always weigh things up before I dive in. The man was laughing and joking with other people, and I had two friends with me, so I reckoned there was safety in numbers. I go close to the line very often, but I don't cross it if I can help it. Thanks for your concern.

LOL! That was a great story. There are just those moments that we could indeed make priceless.^_^ In my case though, Im almost always devilish. It depends on the situation and the people that Im with, but if even a slight opportunity presents itself I would take that chance. It's all good and fun of course and to me and my friends' amusement. Sometimes they still get caught of guard by the things that I do but they're really not that surprised.

Hello, bjcyrix. Yes, I spend a lot of time being devilish. My friends never know what to expect, so it keeps them on their toes. There's nothing wrong with a bit of fun, as long as nobody gets hurt or insulted, and I'm always careful of other people's feelings.

That sounds just like something that I would do - seriously! I am a big flirt or outgoing and friendly or whatever you want to call it. My husband says that I could "pick-up" just about any guy or girl that I wanted to just with the way that I am. He thinks that it is funny, and it is one of the things that he noticed and liked about me. So yes, I let the Devil out often, otherwise he is more like a Tazmanian Devil than anything when he finally gets to come out to play.

Hello, PA. Yes, I like flirting as well, and my husband says I'm a magnet to men. He says it in a nice way, though, unlike my first husband, who was insanely jealous. If I'd done a quarter of the things he accused me of, I'd never have been vertical for long enough to cook the kid's dinner. That old devil does need a regular outing if you're like us, doesn't he?

Yes, jealousy is bad enough to begin with in a partner, but when you have a personality like ours it makes it oh so much worse! I do not flirt in a disrespectful way (or at least I do not think it is), and I do it in front of my husband. I think there would be more to worry about if I was doing it behind his back or trying to hide it. I also will be just as "fun" in a joking way with girls as with guys, although sometimes people do misunderstand my intent. If we do not let that Devil out on a somewhat regular basis, though, then he will make his way out anyway, and then who knows what will happen.

Hahahahahaha. I like the story. Well I have to share something about it too. when I was in college we have a classmate whom a girl who we find bullying every girl she meet that exceeds her standard. She thought she was beautiful, but the truth she is not. One time all of our class watch a UAAP basketball (this is a college basketball) in Araneta Coliseum. That day we were compulsory to attend. We went there and we saved some seat for our classmate who will be arriving late. She arrived and she sit in one of the comfortable seats which was in front row. My one classmate reminded her that the seat was already been saved for professor, but she insisted to sit there because she really wants a comfortable seats. I was the one who told to say to her that her seat is on the fifth row which was now very far from our section. One professor already tapped her to go on the fifth row but she still insisted with angry face. But she did not have a choice but to follow because it was a professor. So she was going up now, because I was very irritated because of her attitude, as she was going up in the stairs going to fifth row, I blocked my legs on her way and she tripped. I quickly hide my legs after she tripped and she looked around and check whoever done it. Everyone saw it but did not tell any word, but instead laugh at her. She continued walking until she reached her proper seats and I smile inside. I let my devil in me out!

Hello, Grecyhunny. I love that one. She certainly sounds as if she deserved it. Let's hope it made her think about her own behaviour, because it's not nice when people are bullied. I'm sure she didn't like everyone laughing at her, either - that sort of person never does.

That must have been hilarious at the moment. That was really courteous of the spanish guy to just chime in and have fun with you. The last devil I let loose was when my recent ex boss was all grumpy one day and walking around saying this and that. I was out of the office and down by where the workmen were as Id usually take a walk to see that all was going as planned whether or not he was there. He turned to me at one point and said something about me going to the office to do something. It was done in such a manner that as soon as his back was turned I looked at the supervisor and two of the workmen and mimicked my boss pointing and shaking my finger at them. They were surprised as they'd never seen me in that mode. They snuck a laugh then the supervisor called out to me and asked if I had called him. When I turned to answer him he pointed back and shook a finger at me. All this took place with the boss standing there with his back slightly turned. I nearly burst into laughter but had to check myself and we all had a little laugh at the bosses expense.

My friends already know that I am very unpredictable and to always expect the unexpected wherever I am and werever I go! They know that I am always full of mischeif! I like the way you think too!
