Are you happier when you're busy?

Pretending, or really busy at work? - Busy at work instead of worrying

At work, are you happier when you're busy? Recently, there has been some 'uneasiness' at work. After one of the more senior employess was let go last week, people have again started to become nervous. It's just like when the recession started and people were let go left and right. Now, evidence of some nervous talk around the water cooler has again surfaced. Fortunately, I've been really busy. Except for the odd moments where I get to myLot (like, now), I haven't had time for anything else. And frankly, I'm OK with it. Instead of sitting idle, and worrying about job security. If I would be let go, I'd rather that it happen quickly. Instead of a build up, with the suspense killing me. Are you busy at work now? Aren't you glad you're working? Isn't it better to be really busy and not worry about being let go? What's the situation in your workplace?

The place that I work for now, just got done with their "re-structuring" which is more like downsizing. Luckily, I still have my Job. And yes, I'm glad that I'm working, and yes since so many people gone so we get very busy. At least at work, the time passing by so quick too.

It's funny how 're-structuring' and 'downsizing' tends to have the same meaning in this context. And re-structuring is the exact same word our VP used when he let go of one of the employees last week. Thanks for responding!

Having a nw VP at work, and reporting directly under him, I still have to project that sense of... I am so lucky! I am loved And needed at work. ...towards him. Hopefully I could get that done, before they start letting go of people again.

i hate sitting at work when i am bored! the time goes by really slowly! then i am always thinking of things i could be doing at home too! for me here at work, business comes in spurts. there are times when it is insanely busy and times when it is pretty slow.

I was just like that before myLot. I would also sit at work and think of all the chores that I needed to do at home. Thankfully I discovered this wonderful site. It keeps my mind busy when there isn't much going on at work. Thanks cher913.

When I did work outside od home I liked being busy, but since I worked on an ambulance it didn't seem right to want to be too busy! Now that I run the house and a home based business, and have the best job security I know of, I still seem to always be in motion, I must like it that way or I would slow down. Glad that you seem to have some security where you work bounce, not enough of that going around lately.

Yes you're right! That would be odd, wanting to be busy if you're with an ambulance. I guess some people just work well, or should I say 'cope' well when they are in constant motion. My job security is nowhere near yours! What's with the oilers? They stung the sharks, the wings, and even the canucks?! Must be nice playing without pressure.

Hi bounce. So far, the situation in our office is okay... No threats of lay offs. But as you've said in your discussion, I am also happier at work when I'm busy. It feels good to trigger my mind and really be a writer. However, am also feeling bored with our project lately. It's a good thing that a new writing project is coming up. I feel very fortunate that I have a job. I like my job because of the flexible schedule, the less pressure, and less supervision from the bosses. Not to mention the salary increase that they promised me. I also feel blessed because they encourage me to practice my profession. I hope things will get better at your workplace. Take care always.

Hi arystine. It's been better here. It's been a lot busy lately at work. Our new VP has gone through real academic training so there's a lot of statistical reports to be written. Unlike all my previous bosses in this company where actual, roll-up-your-sleeves, meet-people kind of work was given more importance. A lot of changes still needs to be done here, so I welcome the change. But I wish they'd promise me a salary increase too, just like you.

Well, I am always happy when I am busy BUT IF THERE'S A GOOD REASON in a first place. Like, I can't be happy about doing boring things or filling for another, when that would get me nowhere. Wasting my time isn't fun. I would say that my best experience is when I am working on my own things, then I can be busy even for 10-12 hours, in the making, without feeling a glitch of tiredness. It's a cool feeling, I am sure all of you felt at some point, doing someting, somewhere.. But if I had been working on a PC, and didn't had so much to do, I'd definitely be on myLot, writing comments like yourself.. :)

I've been lucky enough in the past to work on projects where I was pretty much in-charge of anything. That was the best work I ever did. I had an ultimate goal, but the timelines, and milestones I made for myself. I even did the hiring when I needed help. Liky said, that is the best kind of work. I also worked for 10-12 hours then, and I was never tired! Thanks for the input.

Oh well... This topic has come to my notice in the most suitable time.. The reason: I have joined a new office recently and over there I am sitting 'on paid bench' for a month. The batch which they wish to train is not full yet, and it'll be another week to get that done! So our training will start in the next month. For the whole month, we're at home... being paid for not doing anything! You know what, I hate to be idle! Thanks to myLot, it has a lot of work for me. I love to be busy, love to work! Whenever I'm idle I feel terrible, lonely and negative thoughts overshadow my mind... For a man, it is highly important to be busy. I am waiting for the training to start... Hope it'll begin soon... Have a nice time!

Hello mr pearl. Like you, I also hate to be sitting idle while the rest of the company, or work place is very busy. And like you, I also hate the negative thoughts that come in when I'm not doing anything. I hope for your sake the training starts. In the meantime, keep myLotting. Thanks.

I hate being bored. I like having something around to keep me busy and if I'm busy at work, it makes work go by so much faster. Also, when I'm not bored, I definitely feel so much better about the situation and feel happier about my work.

I also hate being bored. Specially now at work, when there are a lot of lay offs going around. A lot of negative thoughts and insecurities if I'm idle. That's why I get happier when I'm busy at work. Thanks for the response highflyingxangel!

hi bounce I am retired but I did work until I was 80 so I was always glad when I was busy and I was always busy as I was one of the pages who put all the media away, books, dvds, cds, magazines, newspapers, videos, the whole thing. They very seldom ever fired any one. but as i was almost 80 the second in c ommand did not want me there, and she twisted the manager into firing me as she told Emily fire her or I quit. so Emily did and she lost her job over it. she gave this reason for firing me. she is a good wo rker but shes almost 80.,that did not sit well with the people at headquarters so they fired Emily and the bit@h that was second in command. they asked me to come back, well sorry people but I just had a bad fall, broke my shoulder, smashed it really had to have a bionic shoulder joint r eplacement, the result I cannot life my left arm all the way up,, so could no longer work in the library. sorry people so i was retired permanently much to my disgust. why not let older people work if they can, we need the money a lot of us.

Hi Hatley, your response sort of became a mini-rant. I think I understand your situation. When I get to 80 I would like to keep working too. And I wouldn't want anybody twisting somebody's arm to get me fired. I imagine myself to be still very active at that time, and work would be one of my joys in life, even if it's just part time.

You are so right in saying that we always want what we don't have. I'm sure that if I get too busy everyday at work, I would be wishing for days where I don't have to do anything. It's just now, that there are some negative vibes at work that I am happy to be very busy. Thanks icegermany. And I hope that your two kids not make you too busy so you'd still have time for yourself.

I agree with you 110%! Being busy and possibly even working overtime is much better than the alternative - not working or having hours cut. I am busier at my second part time job.. but not so much the first. I'm just happy I have a place to work!

Yes, although I like being busy and working overtime, I've slowly learned working smarter. I think I just agreed with you on another discussion, that your hours would be cut because of another employee helping out at night on the weekends. So that you could have your weekends back, and possibly find other opportunities where you don't have to work as hard.

There are times I'm busy at work, sometimes I'm not when paperworks do not occupy my table. When problems come my way, I prefer to focus my full attention to my work so as to forget whatever is bothering me. Also, getting busy makes me happy because I know my position in the company is secure.

Sometimes I am alone in the office. Sometimes, my boss will come in and I have work to do. As I am new I have to go through all things which is beneficial or not beneficial to me as I have to learn. But I love it when I am not busy, though!
