Today is birthday of Rama our God

Hello every body to day is our festival RAMA NAVAMI, birth day of God Rama, he was born on January 10 5114 B.C. (SOURCE-Times News Network, Nov 8 2008 Satday) Well as per english calander today is 24th March, not January 10th, most of our religious functions are based on our hindu calander, many observe birth days on the basis of hindu calander too, so each year it will fall on different dates. In the epic Valmiki Ramayan by Valmiki, there are precise details of planetary positions and constellations associated with life of Rama. Pushkar Bhatnagar of Indian Revenue Service used the software Planetarium, that reproduces the motion of the planets, he could reproduce what is described by Valmiki. Thus the birthday is established as January 10 5114 B.C. This morning we had been to the Rama temple here to worship , we offered coconuts as usual. My wife is fasting too. My hindu friends how do you observe Rama Navami? My friends from other religion how do you observe your festivals, which are those? Professor

Hello Professor, it's nice to learn about other religions, enjoy your worshipping. I'm a Christian, and their dates are well documented.

I'm a catholic so I don't know what are the celebrations you have in India. This week is very holy among us Catholic because it is Holy Week we comemorate the sacrifices of Jesus Christ to us. We do penance, sacrifices and going to church to pray and to repent our sins. We have many beliefs and traditions here during this time.

dear professor, catholics have only one celebration of birthday, and that is christmas day, the birth of jesus christ. during this day, we do merry making, reunion of families, food everywhere. i go to church and greet Him a happy birthday and offer prayers and light some candles. so, two calendars are eyed by you always? one english calendar and the other - the hindu calendar? isnt that confusing? thank you so much for this discussion. ann

Yes, today is Ram Navami. Hindus celebrate 'Ram Navami'?. Well, Ramnavami occurs in the month of March. Celebrations begin with a prayer to the Sun early in the morning. At midday, when Lord Rama is supposed to have been born, a special prayer is performed. In northern India especially, an event that draws popular participation is the Ramnavami procession. The main attraction in this procession is a gaily decorated chariot in which four persons are dressed up as Rama, his brother Laxman, his queen Sita and his disciple Hanuman. The chariot is accompanied by several other persons dressed up in ancient costumes as work by Rama's solders. The procession is a gusty affair with the participants shouting praises echoing the happy days of Rama's reign. Thanks.

Yes, I saw in the calendar today that it was Rama Navami - I cannot fast as I am having exams now! My grandmother will be fasting today! We offered prayer to Lord Rama and the Gurukul did an Archana on behalf of our Family members!
