Can you sleep at night without lights turned on?

I had observed that some people cannot sleep at night if their lights are turned off. But in my case, it is exactly the opposite. I cannot sleep if the lights is turned on. I am dazzled with the lights and I cannot sleep soundly because if the light is on, I always mistaken it as already day and then I cannot sleep more.Another thing is that, I think it is more practical to sleep without lights because it saves more energy and we won't have to pay much on electricity bill. What about you guys, can you sleep with or without lights?

Hi annierose, I can sleep with the lights on or off. I does not bother me much. But for economical reason I prefer to sleep with lights turn off, just like you. The only time that I can not fall a sleep is when the light is exactly above me or facing the light. I usually turn my body from the light.

I can sleep with the lights off pretty OK. Well I do need a little bit of light. I can only sleep with the lights on if I'm really exhausted and I could just sleep anywhere. That's rarely the case though. I usually need the lights turned off all the time.

for me, it has to be dark before i can sleep. in fact, the darker it is, the better it is for me! i usually sleep with something over my eyes at night.

I sleep with the light out. I'm not an owl! Some people really can't sleep when it's dark, those are the owls. You are right, turning the lights off during sleep would be a cut in the electric bill. why turn on the lights when you have nothing to light?

I sleep without lights but I like to fall asleep with the TV on (I set it to turn off after a set time). I'm sort of scared of the dark but lately due to health issues I can't move very quickly, so I've adopted a new philosophy -- if you can't run, why be scared? :P

Hi, annierose. Yes, I can sleep with or without the lights turned on. But, I may wake up quicker if the lights are turned on. I have slept with the lights on many of times and I have been so afraid of the dark. But, I usually will be able to sleep better with the lights on then.

The best condition that I could sleep in is absolutely soundless and dark room. I can't stand sleeping in the bright light, even a single ray of light can disturb my sleep so I would need to hide my eyes.

When I was a child , sleeping with the light was a necessity. Too many scary movies I think! Now that I am older I can sleep without the lights, but total daarkness can still unnerve me.

It's very difficult for me to sleep with the lights on, as they bother me when I'm trying to fall asleep. I think that this is a good thing, so I don't waste electricity while I'm sleeping. My body also seems to react to light so I wake up immediately if there's light.

it would be better for me to turn off the light since its hard to sleep when light on. even if you close your eyes the light will reflect your eyes. its nice to sleep on dark room cause even if your eyes are open you cannot see any reflection that will irriate your eyes. and it will be a peace of mind to sleep on dark room where no lights.

It would be quite difficult for me to sleep with any lights on. I am a very light sleeper, and even have a hard time falling asleep when it is completely dark. When the lights are turned on it distracts my mind and allows me to not sleep soundly, if I manage to sleep at all.

When I was a kid lights should be on or atleast a lamp will do. Total darkness makes me think of all thoses scary stuff. But now lights on or off I can surely have a goodnight sleep :)

Hello everybody. icant sleep with all lights off. i need some light on. In fact it wasnt always so. Some years ago a big earthquake happened in the night and the lights were off because we were sleeping. I was afraid so much. After that i always want some light on when i sleep as in my country (Greece) we have often such situations.

Oh yes I can. Once I wake up, I feel so refreshed whenever the lights are turned off. It is so peaceful for me when I do so.

I can sleep at night whether i have my lights on or not. Funny thing though is that i sleep with the lights on most of the time due to a superstitious belief that our old babysitter advised me to do. You see,she was quite old when she started taking care of my siblings and i. I had a really wild nightmare one night when my lights were normally off and when i told her about it she suddenly told me about my room being haunted because i was away for a long time and nobody really lived in my room for 2 years which invited bad entities to reside their. I scoffed it off and continued to sleep in that room with lights off for 2 more days and for 2 days straight i experienced the same thing. So i finally took her advice and turned the lights on and had music playing in my room voila... nightmare's gone. She explained that the light and noise made it seem unwelcome to these entities. So unless there's someone else in my room with me... i keep the lights on sheesh i should be ashamed... i'm too old for silly superstitious beliefs

I have no opinion on that. Actually I think that if everything is OK with you and you get sleep regularly and really have some rest sleeping you can get it even at the airport bench when all the lights are on. I have suffered sleep deprivation all of my life and am really jealous when i hear somebody else's only problem with sleeping is that they can not sleep with lights on. I used to wake up with the sun rays when i was a kid but still had problems falling asleep. Now I have problem with both falling asleep and waking up. I also suffer from anxiety neurosis and as a result sleeping is a huge problem for me, affecting my rhythm of day and, what follows, almost every aspect of life.
