When you estimate your monthly groceries[say for food provisions like wheat flour, rice ,cooking oil, salt, or soap, toothpaste, detergent, etc] do you estimate this perfectly and get everything in one transaction or are you forced to buy something at intervals?]

I do try to buy groceries at one go because it saves me a lot of time. I also don't have a car so it is also economical in terms of cab fare. I am not one of those who like to go to the market everyday, so as much as possible I stock up and go buy groceries with a list of things needed.

Thanks dear friend for the participation and for kickstarting the discussion. Here , in our place we have a system of home delivery .THere is a person who comes twice a week or thrice a week and so, though I do give list in the beginning of the month, I do tend to keep buying on other days too.

I seldom use delivery service, so if my hubby is helping me to buy groceries, I would prefer get everything at one go. If not, I would buy groceries nearby and more importantly, not heavy!

I do try and buy everything at one go. But because hubby is usually stopping me from buying certain things..lol....his eye is on the bill...I end up having to buy at intervals too. But I would prefer the once a month thing...and I usually have my list ready every month.

That is precisely my case too ; though he does not stop me I tend to feel that if we estinmate perectly, then the budget would be under control. However, sometimes i do run short and then I will have to replenish stock.

Hi kala, do you do it? just curious...I never do it at one go.I pick up a few stuff at a time. One has to go to buy vegetables and fruits every week or twice a week and I buy some groceries as well.I am not really organised where shopping for groceries are concerned.

Hi Kiran! I estimate reasonably well for wheat flour, rice, oil etc..,At times, there arises some shortfalls because I would be in short supply for certain things like til oil, tea or mustard etc..,Earlier, in Trichy, Shops were unbelievably clsoe by.MY house is a beautiful one with shops being so closeby that they are short of being downstairs.[it is not on the mainroad too]. Now, in Mumbai they are slightly far away and if I need somethign urgently the question of rushing out and coming back within 5 minute is farfetched. So, I have to estimate it better. However, still my delivery biy ensures that I can take it easy[so to your question--I don't do this].

kala, I too pick up rice, atta, oil, tea leaves and sugar at one go, buying in bulk for the entire month. The rest of the stuff , I buy as and when it gets over....I find shopping quite monotonous now after the super market culture has taken over.I miss the good old grocery shops ...thankfully here in Mangalore we still have the fish market like before so also the vegetable market where villagers sell their products...it is so fresh and nice to buy it because one is sure that there is no insecticide and pesticide on it...

I really don't and can't afford to buy by bulk. We used to live near a shopping mall and everytime we end up needing something, we just ask someone to go walk and buy. Everything here has budget packs, like shampoos, soy sauce, oil, vinegar, lotions, cheese spread all in sachets. It's not very practical if you really sum it up in a month all your expenses of little purchases but for day to day needs, it is quite useful.

i usually buy them once every week... i can't buy them in one go especially for meats and vegetables because they can get rotten pretty quickly... and i prefer to eat fresh food as well... that's why i prefer to buy my groceries at intervals... also, i have to plan my budget not to spend too much money at once... take care and have a nice day...

Thanks for the response; it is true thta when we buy things as and when we need rather than stocking them in bulk it gets cheaper. The pain of storing bulk cheap purchases is greater than the individuial hig cost [if any]; and of course for veg and meat the aspect of storing for long would never arise.

Whenever I go shopping, I really try hard to get as many things as I can as possible before I go home. I hate going out and not being able to find everything or come home with everything because that means when my second shopping trip comes I have to move everything I got the day before to organize it.

Moving everything is a big nuisance and this would bne moreso when we have to do it singlehanded.I would love to go out and buy once in 15 days but, for this I should have some good company.EVen otherwise,I find thsi homedelivery system suits me fine. Thanks for the participation.

I don't hoard groceries in my house as I don't want to turn my store like a supermarket shelf. I will replenish my stock only when they run out. Since the big supermarket is just a stone throw from my house, I can just walk over and get what I want.

Our family goes to the supermarket to buy groceries once a month. It's because there's a supermarket here that offers double shopping points when you shop there every first Wednesday a month. We get to use those double points later on for additional groceries and items that we need. If there's something that we forgot to buy or could not find on that first Wednesday, we just buy those the next time we get to any supermarket at any day. My mom does a great estimate on how much to pay and she seldom goes over that.

I hate food shopping so I usually shop and get everything at one time. Food shopping takes so much out of me. I really wish I could find someone to do my shopping that would be so cool. There are on occasions where I have forgotten something and have to go back and make another trip but that is very rare, thank god.

We try to. But sometimes we forget some things as well. And there are a lot of times when we buy out of control -- buying stuffs which aren't really needed. We end up buying things at intervals because of that.

I try an buy everything at once I buy in bulk when I can.I do all of our major shopping at the beginning of the month then maybe a couple of times I might have to stop on the way home to get milk and cheese little things like that. I buy our meat in bulk at our local meat market and then we portion everything out for the month and label it and freeze it.

Hi kala, Earlier I had the habit of making a list and purchase everything once in a month that also in the beginning of the month. Now the shop is in front of our house and everything is available near to our home and I left the habit of purchasing in one go. Now I will purchase the same when it is going to finish it. Yes I will buy things before finishing the same. I will check other items as which one is going to finish and purchase those things too. My only concern is ‘not to waste anything’.

Hi Sree!We not only have similar names but we also seem to have similar attitudes. I too try and buy groceries for the month but I am quite careful that things should not get wasted. In Mumbai, preserving things during monsoon is a big hassle. During thsoe times, I always find this regular home delivery system easy. That apart, I do all the purchasing at home singlehanded and I find it tiresome to carry things. So I end up buying things when there is a short supply.

hello kalav, I always had the habit of buying grocery for a month consumption,at one time. It saves me time, and also the budgeting matters most. The monthly expenses is well budgeted, from bills to groceries,it's hard to budget money(for me) if buying grocery is not done at one time. And i hate to be inside the bathroom, all set to take a bath, and realize that the shampoo bottle is empty(ugh!!!) Or start cooking and find out that i run out of cooking oil, sauce and everything(hahaha)

TRUE Jaiho! it would be quite irritating to find us without oil in the midst of cooking; but do you think thta if we buy everything at one go , with perfect planning the bill would be under control?THis would also depend on how people use things.

hie kalav, i do my grocery weekly. some of the items i purchase are for monthly usage like rice, flour, cooking oil, soyasauce, sugar and salt for example. for the weekly consumption, they are like vegetables, fruits, chickens and fishes. the shops and supermarkets are very near my home. i just take a walk and go and buy. its in a way a walking exercise for me and i get to meet the neighbours along the way. my estimates on groceries are rather good and i know at times i can save some money. the reason is that some of the vegetables, fruits, prawns and even fish are cheap as they are in season. have a good day, kalav and happy grocery day.

Thank you gracefuldove for your participation. It is wonderful that your estimate proves quite accurate.Earlier, when I was young I was always given a budget constraint and I used to abide by that.I used to buy groceries for the month and this wouldbe within budget and I will manage with avaialble resources. Now too there is a budget , but here the convenience of buying things nearby [one or two shortfalls if any ] is not there.I opt for thsi home delivery and at times I end up buying at intervals too.I do not know if this is a spill over of my being careful all these years.I err on the lower side.

We don't usually buy everything at one go. Most of the time, we buy groceries once every 2 weeks. Anyway, the stores that we go to is just a stone's throw away from our house. So, it is really not troublesome to go get our stuff. Also, I always pass by the stores on my way home from work. So, it's not necessary to buy a month's supplies all at one time.

Life is tough nowadays that's why everything in our house is budgeted, but sometimes you go beyond your budget when a grocery store price goes up even just for a cents it adds up. We just buy things we need for a week..yeah sometimes we buy things out of our budget when we see a good price deal than the regular price..I mean sale items..
