Sleep walking dogs

It's been a long time since we have had a house dog, most of ours have been outside dogs. So I don't know if this is common, but it sure surprised me. My 4 year old hound dog was standing by my bed around 3:00AM, the fact that she was wildly wagging her tail woke me up. I talked to her, no response, I got out of bed, no response, she just continued to look at my bed and wag her tail. Finally I touched her and started walking toward her bed, she slowly followed and got in her bed so I covered her up. This morning I told Hubby about this and we decieded she must have been sleep walking. Is this strange? Or is it common?

Wow! I have never heard of a sleep walking dog. It's definitely not out of the question though because I'm almost sure that they dream. I see mine kicking and sometimes softly barking in their sleep. They also have the rapid eye motions that people have. It could be possible. I'll have to ask the vet when I see him this coming week about it. See what he says..lol.

Please let me know what your Vet says, I hate to take my dog in she hates the Vet But I also don't want to ignore this in case it points to some problem.

Or maybe you just rolled over and snored and woke her up?

I wouldn't doubt that for a moment, except she doesn't sleep in our room so she had to walk in there from her own bed.

My dog Cassie is the only dog I’ve ever owned and I’ve never observed her sleep walking. I’ve not heard of cases of sleep walking dogs but I don’t see why not, if humans can sleepwalk and I’ve heard of cats that do it I don’t see why dogs wouldn’t. That must have felt like a strange experience considering how responsive dogs usually are to have one just stand there trance like!

That is so funny I never heard of that. The collie I grew up with and now my shih tzu have never done that. My Cody will come early in the morning wagging his tell because he either wants to go out or have a treat. I know he is spoiled rotten.

We have nothing but spoiled rotten pets around here, wouldn't have it any other way.

dearest pat, i have a dog but i never saw her walk from a place to another while asleep. well, several times though i saw her dreaming. she was making noises and little barks and seemed walking stationary but she was lying down. maybe she was dreaming she was running or something. your dog must have seen something friendly or else he would not wag his tail. i think he is awake because dogs are light sleepers. sometimes our pets just does something unexplainable. dont worry. have a nice day. ann

I think she saw something or someone she liked. I must admit the first thing I did was check Hubby's breathing to make sure he was still among the living, at our age you are concerned about such things. But she never looked at me and I was saying her name and talking to her the whole time. In some way she was not aware of me. Very strange. Dogs do dream, the yip and move their feet even wag their tail but I never had one walk before.

I am not a dog owner, and have not had many in my life, only for the most part cats. It stands to reason that it can happen, they have brains, but for the life of me, I have never heard of this before. I hope she is okay.

I have never heard of that but if we do it, so can they! I think it's sweet that she was apparently dreaming of you. Gus will move his legs in his sleep and it can be very disruptive when he is chasing rabbits since he sleeps with me.

I dont know what to say. If I touch my dog when he's sleeping, he wakes up right away. If I breathe too hard, he wakes up lol. I thought all dogs were light sleepers to begin with. Maybe she missed you and wanted to sleep with you?

She sleeps very hard unless she hears something unusual, she has never slept with us so she doesn't know she could. I just don't think she was awake at all.
