What do you think about those who go to beaches during the Holy Week?

Hi everyone! As we all know, we are now observing Holy Week. It is a time of repentance and recollection. For others, it is a time of holidays and celebration. Since I was little, I have always lived in the city. I haven't experienced or witnessed some religious practices during the Holy Week except for novenas, processions, stations of the cross, and those who strike their back with whips. I remember the times when there was absolutely nothing on TV but white noise. Times have changed. TV stations still operate even on the Easter Triduum (Maundy Thursday until Black Saturday). Others use this opportunity to take a long Holiday to spend with family while some go to beaches especially Boracay. In relation to Lent, what is your opinion on people who go to beaches and just party during the Holy Week especially the Easter Triduum? In my opinion, it is inappropriate. Even if people would say it's the only chance they have to rest and have fun, that's not why those days are days off. Even as a person living in the city, I would not go partying during this season. I can't even turn up the volume of the radio and TV. Of course, people whose religion do not celebrate it are all right to do as they like during these times. Thanks for reading and have a nice day! A blessed Holy Week to those who celebrate it.

well, i feel sad about it because they should be reflecting on the Lord's days when He was sacrificing Himself for us. i mean, yeah, it's their choice and i am no one to tell them you do this and do that but, they are catholics, not all of them but i suppose and assume that most of them are since Philippines is a Catholic county and most people are Catholics in majority. i just hope that they find it in their heart to somehow pray in their cottages, observe silence even for a day or so as what the church is advising us to do. i think it is important for us to be united with this, like for example, take the Muslim people, when they say it is Ramadan, have you just seen a single Muslim running around not observing it? nope, right? so i mean, it's their commitment to the Lord and they believe that it really affects their lives. summer has just started and we are just asked for a week to avoid it. if you ask me, Easter Sunday is the best day to start celebrating and going anywhere you wanna go, beaches, parties, everything. but not fom the Palm Sunday until the Black Saturday. i like the cable companies that observes Holy Week by showing the Catholic films like Moses, Passion of the Christ. It's one thing that people can do to reflect their faith. I just really hope Catholics, us, can find it in our hearts to be united like what Muslims can do. not that i compare, but i respect and honor Muslims for their commitment to Allah.

Oh! I hate it as well. Other than the fact that these people are office workers and they take advantage of their leaves or holidays, they don't know the meaning of it truly. Same goes with celebrities and busy, very busy people. They go out or party a lot.But kudos to the people who does their native tradition such as praying and going to churches, repentance and reflection. Me, im staying home with my mom and brother. Taking the lost time when we had to be very busy at work. In any case, it's summer time we can always go the the beach or eat out! and enjoy the sun.

Hello EnslinPorter, I agree with you, times have changed now. I also remember those times that there is no show on the television. From Holy Monday to Holy Wednesday noon time show would have their own drama offering for the Holy Week and From Thursday to Saturday, there are no show. With regards to the people who go on vacation and enjoy the beaches it is their own choice and their own belief. Yes, as far as my belief is concerned that is very inappropriate, but maybe our belief is not the same as theirs. I think there are religion that doesn't celebrate the Holy Week, so they just take the advantage of having a vacation with their family, since most of the offices don't have their work at that time. I do hope that before enjoying themselves they would meditate first about the Lenten season. Actually, they can celebrate the Easter Triduum together with their family, so this is also a nice and Holy Way of bonding together. Easter Sunday would be a great way to celebrate.

For me the Holy Week is nothing more than a period of holidays where I lived before. I'm an atheist, so I don't go to any religious event, neither I'm interested in going. I think that it's great that people enjoy their holidays doing fun things like going to the beach. Holidays are made to be enjoyed

Holy Week for me is a time for repentance and prayers. That is the only time when we spend more with God aside from the Sundays and any other day when we take time to pray and to attend masses. For people who will go to the beach there is nothing wrong with them if that is how they believe it. Other religion will not observe Holy Week. It is up for them on how they will spend time with the Lord on their own free will.

I think going to the beach and worship do not need to be mutually exclusive -- if that's your reason for going. A quiet beach can be a great place for reflection. On the other hand if you say you're going for that and end up at the bar or club... maybe you're kidding yourself.

it is their decision, some are really working hard and it is their time off with family. N0t everybody is really a devout Catholic who practices. I also agree though that we should live simply during these times and avoid being loud or party too much.

Well, it's their choice. But for me Holy week is a time for prayers , reflections on your self, maybe transformation for a better you. A time for repentance for our sins or let say wrong doings. A time for forgiveness. You don't have to nail yourself on the cross to pay for your sins. HOLY WEEK for me is a time of reflections and prayers.
