Reading through comments

I was just wondering if any of you MyLotters actually read each and every comment on discussions in here, and I mean each and every comment. I've tried a couple of times and it can take a long time sometimes, so I just reply to the main post usually, sometimes my post is near the 100 mark in the list! So I was just wondering if you read them all, and if you do, do you comment on each, most, or some of them, if any?

i read them all.. but it depends on what the comment actually is as to whether or not i respond back to it. i hate the generic playback of "thank you for yer response" and nothing else.. and sometimes, theres nothing else to really say.. or there IS stuff to say that i really shouldnt .

Hi, friend. I always comment on all the responses to my discussions, regardless of the number of the responses. It can be a really tough job especially when your discussion receives more than 50 responses. Sometimes i have to rack my brains to comment back. But it is a necessary task for me because i see it more as a matter of respect to others than a series of questions and answers. If i leave the responses to my discussions out there without paying any attention, no one may want to respond to my discussions soon.

It is respectful to respond when you're 'hosting' a topic, it's good manners :) 'sides not all topics are about the Q&A process either. Good Luck on keeping up with your posts!

Howdy anurag I wasn't thinking about posts that were started by yourself, just posts started by others. Of course I would read every comment on my own posts :) I even try to go back to the interest I made and see if there's anything new there as well.

If only I had the time to do something like that, I would be a happy person. Sadly, that kind of time is not a luxury that I seem to have. The discussions that I start, I obviously read those comments. After all, since I respond to them, it would be hard not to read them and respond to them. Still, the story is different based on the comments I read in other discussions. I do admit, there are times that I skim them on occasion. Most of all, after the fact, once I have posted. After all, do not want to be subconsciously influenced by something that someone wrote. That tends to happen fairly often, even if I do not intentionally copy something. Other times, I just move on. Especially as of late. I am sure there are many quality comments that I am missing on but time's a burning and got to get moving. For those who read every single comment, good for you.

HIya megamatt, I see your point about being influenced by reading the other comments before posting your own, and yes time is a luxury Icannot afford either. Thanks for your thougts :)

Well, when I answer a discussion I don't read all of the comments, as it takes too long It's really difficult to read all the comments, as it takes too much time, and I prefer to center myself in the main topic of the discussion.

exactly how I feel madteaparty, it can take way too long to read all the comments on others discusions.

I read some of them, it can be very tiring so I just scan through most of them...And when I find that I have something to reply to a certain comment I reply to it..

I try. There are a few things that stop me. 1) If the discussion has more than 60 responses, I'm pretty sure that someone has expressed what I want to say so I read a few to get a general feeling then move on. 2) If the original poster is no where to be seen, i.e. not commenting on what people have to say, then I'm outta there...if the OP can't be bothered then neither can I (unless there is something I'm itching to say) 3) If I'm reading the responses and someone writes pretty much what I was going to say then I will leave it. I may add an extra point or remark to their post but this is rare. Sometimes a new thread starts with someone's response but I'm not sure if this is supposed to happen. I know it happens on other boards but is it of any worth to do that here? I often wonder.

When I respond to a discussion I usually skim through the comments already made. If there are lots of comments and they go on for more than one page then I'll skim the first page and then respond. I don't really have time to read each post in detail, but if a comment catches my attention then I'll read the whole thing throughly and reply. When I'm starting my own discussion I'll read each comment and reply to the ones I feel like I can say something extra to other than just "thanks for your response" or something like that.

Yeah. Time is money. Everyone's trying to use their time to their best advantage. Right now though, I'm in college so I don't have a lot of time anyway.

I don't read them all especially when there are pages after pages of responses. I know that mylot says we are supposed to read them, but I just don't take the time to read the ones that have lots of responses. I think it really takes to much time to read them all, and if i did read them, I wouldn't have time to even respond. The ones that get that many responses apparently are doing something right or their discussion is so interesting that lots of users are responding. I don't have that kind of luck at all, but I am thankful for the responses I do receive though, as it is sure better than nothing. Good luck to you and happy mylotting.

I use to do that, however there are discussions that get a lot of responses that it would not be wise to read all of the comments before dropping your own comment. There are discussions that could take around 6 pages long, just imagine how long would it take you to read all the comments before making your own. What i do is read the discussion, read some of the responses given to have some ideas and then respond. This would save me a lot of time and still have enough time to read other discussions.

that seems to be the common here with nearly everyone. To only read the main and a couple responses to that post, all due to a time issue. I have seen discussions reaching several pages, and my initial reaction is to read no comments at all, but I do end up readign a couple of them. I suppose if I could be online all day I'd be ble to read them all...but I can't, got other things that need my attention as well. Happy MyLotting :)

I can't read all of them since I ain't on 24/7^^ But when I am online I pick out the most interesting ones, I can try to read all, but there are some things as "what do you think about the war in Irak" if you know what I mean. Helping other people with my comment is usefull, but such a thing isn't really usefull in my eyes. Also the very difficult written topics get read by me, but I can't reply on those since the level is bit too high xD

If the discussion is really interesting then I will take my time to read most of the comments, otherwise I would skim or read only the first two or three.
