I would first ask what kind of things my friend wanted to see. There would be little use boring him or her with visits to the great museums and art galleries if he or she were more interested in pubbing and clubbing (but then I might recommend a better guide than I!)
When visiting the UK, it is almost de rigueur to spend at least one day in London! Everyone, at least once in their life time, it seems, has to see Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge and the Tower, Nelson's Column, the London Eye, a British Policeman, a red telephone box, Buckingham Palace (if not the Queen herself), shop in Oxford Street and (perhaps) Petticoat Lane, feed the pigeons in Trafalgar Square and ride on a red double deck bus.
When I visit a foreign country, there are some sights which one has to see (simply so that one can say 'been there done that') but I really prefer to experience how the people live so I would certainly take my friend to visit and stay with a family, if I could, and shop in an ordinary supermarket, visit pubs and a library and take the bus into town.
Apart from that, there are many cities with their historic castles and cathedrals, beautiful villages nestling in the valleys of Devon and the Cotswolds and scenes to visit from the flat expanse of the fens (with marvellous skies) to the rolling hills of the Downs and the Pennines to the craggy moorlands and wild coasts of Cornwall, Wales and Scotland and the breathtaking lakes and mountains of Wales and the Lake District.
There is really so much to see and do here that I have never really felt the need for a holiday abroad ... certainly not to stay in a Spanish apartment where the only entertainments are the beach and English-speaking fish and chip shops and bars which are exactly like what we have in England!

I was in London a few years ago just for a week end as part of a Europe package holiday which turned out to be a fiasco inasmuch as we landed there on a Saturday and were put up at Cumbreland next to Harrod's. Cumbreland only checks in customers in the evening and so we had to be in the lounge but we did see places including Madam Toussad's which you have not included here and also a tube railway experience. I missed visiting the Harrod's toilet which I was told was worth visiting paying l English pound. I wanted to see the trooping the colour at the Palace which again being a Sunday I missed it. We had to leave by 4 to get into the Euro rail indeed a grand experience on our way to Brussels........

I'm sorry your experience was so disastrous! I hope you get a chance to come to England (or even just London) again.
I thought of mentioning Madame Tussaud's (but the queues for it are usually long! On at least one occasion we gave up and went elsewhere.) I have never thought of Harrod's toilets as being a 'tourist attraction' ... I will add them to my list, LOL!

The Tube is an experience that I, personally, would rather pass up. Buses may not be as quick and it may be more difficult to find the right one but you see much more of London from the top deck of a bus than you ever do from the Tube!

It depends what my friend is interested in and how much time we have. If my friend is interested in culture, history, art or museums there are plenty of places to visit on the island where I live. The biggest city of this island is called Odense are there are art museums, museums about Hans Christian Andersen etc. I would also like to show my friend the famous places in Copenhagen for instanse Tivoli, the little mermaid and the Queens castle. If my friend is more interested in beautiful natural scenery I would take him/her to Silkeborg or Skanderborg or some of the small islands. If my friend prefers to go shopping or clubbing, I would probably take him/her to one of the 3 largest cities: Copenhagen, Aarhus or Odense.

my place is famous with its beautiful scenery and landscape. there is a big lake at mountain slope, fresh rivers and of course fresh air. and the foods are great too. so if you want to visit my place, I'll take you to the lake, drive a boat around the lake, ride a horse, and taste delicious foods. so, when will you visit me? LOL.
