What story from your local folk lore or mythology is your favorite? I think my favorite is a local tale about a very large catfish who eats peoples dogs down by our river.

I think my favorite is the story of Hatchetman. Every year around halloween it comes to mind. There is a story locally that a man escaped from the local mental hospital and lived in a cave in our foothills. He would chase people with the hatchet and I don't know what happened to him.

I like to watch the shows (travel channel has some good ones) on urban legends. My curiousity is definitely whetted.

Actually there are a lot of slave ghost stories. We live not far from where the underground railroad ran through PA and there seems to be more "artifacts" supporting a wider "track" then many thought. I know of one story where three runaways where hidden in a basement compartment. When trackers came to the home they didn't believe the white folk who said there was no one hiding there. The trackers beat the family put them in the home and burt it to the ground. All inside including those in the basement perished. It is said that the ghosts of the white people replay or what ever it is called the last scene of their lives on the property begging to not be burned, and that one of the runaways wanders the property half burnt. It's gruesome I know but they all are I guess.

This huge catfish is supposed to live in one of our local rivers and be huge. Apparently fishermen having been trying to catch it for the last 30, 40 years or so and it is so big that they blame it for any pets that disappear down by the river. As I know there are catfish who can top out at 100 +lbs. down south I guess this isn't too far out there but still.....
