i have just been diagnosed with fibromyalgia again (i havent suffered from it for awhile but now it seems to be back with a vengence). my question is, would you tell your boss if you were diagnosed with any sort of chronic or serious illness? i need to keep my job because right now, my hubby is not working so quitting isnt an option. fortunately, i only work part time. what would you do?

yeah I think I would if I needed special accomodation. I had to have my desk raised so I could stand at it back in the 90's, with a draftsmans chair, so I could also sit. I couldn't have accomplished that without my boss's help. If my boss were not a nice person, I'd come armed with a doctor's note though.

For me honesty is the best if your boss will ask so it's the best to tell the truth. But if he didn't ask so your not lying him right? :)

I'd go to the Dr. I had in Vermont and have him make it go away again. Some bosses are sympathetic and will do what they can for you as a worker if they like you. Others will find fault with your work, try to get grounds to fire you, then say it wasn't because of what you said. So the decision is yours.

I can really say that you have a great dilemma there. From one point of view I can understand you and your points but from another I can't. My hubby doesn't work at the moment so I have to keep up my job although I'm really fed up. But I don't have a health problem not the kind that you have. I think that there is not simple answer to your question, it really depends on your boss nature, there are people (most of them) who wouldn't like to have an employee with medical 'condition', and there are little group of people who would most likely understand and give support. You should ask yourself this question as you are the person who has a best knowledge of your boss nature. Hope this helps and good luck. Best wishes.

You know what...I would tell my employer. Legally they cannot sack you because you have an illness plus I may need to be taking some time off for doctors appointments and such.

I think it just depends on what type of job you have. If your always in front of customers and running around and all that kind of stuff then yeah I would let your employer know. If not I guess you can keep it to your self for awhile but they're going to eventually find out esp since your saying this is more for your body then before. If it were me I would just talk to my boss and let them know what was going on and let them know you are def going to be trying your best and not let it interfer with your work as much as you can but if they seen me acting different then this is why. My previous boss' were all nice and I had a good relationship with them so it was easy for me to tell them if I had a physical issue going on but it just depends on how your relationship is and if you feel comfortable tellin your boss. Good luck to you!

i think you have to tell your boss, it is for them to decide and they will need to understand in case of course if you have any medical problems while at work - they should know how to handle those kinds of situations, right? just let them know and what the doctors say about it, the more they understand your sickness the more they would be able to accomodate and give you special accomodations.

First, let me say I am so sorry for your diagnosis! I am acquainted with persons with this very painful condition. Regarding your question, I am praying that you have a really decent boss, and you can share this very personal information with, and they are very understanding and will treat you with compassion on your bad days. I guess the question you will have to ask yourself...will he/she understand...and possibly, you could arm them with some information about your condition, so they will understand that on your bad days, you may have diminished capacity....but will make up for it on your good days! Some where, recently, could have been Al Sears, M.D. (a site I belong to..as he is a great proponement of vitamins and minerals, and natural healing) that both Potassium and Magnesium are a good supplement for fibromyalgia! I truly am sorry you are being plagued again! Take care..and Cheers!

Hi cher, First of all I want to tell you how sorry I am for your diagnosis. What kind of work do you do? Will your fibro interfere with your job? If you think it will, then maybe you should say something. If you think you might lose your job, then I would hold back until you feel it is obvious that something is wrong. But most of all, I worry about your health. I really can understand your position. I had to quit my job 3 years ago because of my health. A month later my hubby lost his job. This economy is killing us all. I don't know how Canada does Disability but here in Florida, you have to be out of work for a year before your disability kicks in. What does your hubby do? How long has he been out of work? Whatever you do, I hope it works out for you. Hugss Leenie

I feel that the best policy is to be straightforward and honest with your boss. I'm sure that they understand that there will be certain accomodations that will have to be made for you because of your condition, and they will probably be more than willing to make those accomodations. Besides that, being honest with them will explain why there will be some times that you won't be able to work and they cannot fire you on account of the fact that you have a chronic illness.

I suggest the you should tell your boss of your medical condition. In my case, before I was admitted to work, I told my boss that I have a a GERD or Gastroesophagial Reflux Disease, wherein acid from my stomach keeps on going up making me hard to breathe. I then could not walk that much and do exhausting things because catching my breath would be very hard. When I told him my situation, he understood and he would not let me do work at night time. He would let my colleague do it. She would gather the news and I would write it. It's really important that your boss knows what you're going through. Prove to him/her that even if you have that, it won't make you less of a person or an employee for that matter. God bless.

I am a student.but i don't it necessary to tell your boss when you are diagnosed with illness which have no effects with work.but if are working at a restaurant and suffer from Hepatitis B,you should tell your boss about the illness ,and give up your job by yourself .what's more ,you should more care your health ,and see a doctor.

Dear my friend, actually this is hard decision whether we must tell our bos or not. But I think it's depend on your bos character, if he is a humble and a wise person, you should tell him, and I believe he will understand your condition. On the contrary if your Bos is someone with hard character, I mean someone with high idealism, don't try to tell him about your problem if you don't want lose your job.
