How do U utilize the time of power failures? Can U use it in a positive way?

Dear mylotters, Power cuts/failures are common in our country especially in summer season. Many of you are facing power failures often and depend on Inverters/Generators for running the fan (at least) to get some relief in scorching heat. UPS is there to help us to resume the works in computer (for a short period of time). Just imagine the UPS also got dry and you can’t do any works in computer too then what will you do on that time. The power failures help me to develop the good habit of reading newspaper. (I am not a regular newspaper reader). In office hours, there is no power for almost two hours everyday and I can’t do any work and am spending my time for reading news papers. Is the power failure a common scenario in your place? If so how will you tackle the frustrating situation? (If the hot season is going on then it will be frustrating). Please tell me about the weather in your place too. In our place the temperature is 44 degree Celsius.

power failure is very seldom in my area... it is so rare and when it happened, it only happened for a few hours... so what i will do i just spend my time to take a stroll and enjoy the night scenery if it happened at night... if it happened in the morning or afternoon, then i will just spend my time reading books if i am at home... usually i am working and won't get home until night time... so i will be hardly affected by the power failure... take care and have a nice day...

Hi lingli, It is really great to know that you are not facing the problem of power failure and congrats for that. I think your climate is also cool or you people are heading towards winter (just guessing, am not sure). In my case if I am at home and power failure happens there is lots of other works there I can do at the time. If in office, I just enjoy reading or chatting with colleagues. Thank you so much for the participation. Have a nice day.

We have been having severe bouts of power failure, heat and government regulation recently. Obviously, the government has shown an all time low in coping with the deficit in electric power generator. The heat has been high and sun soaring and we are literary panting. To top that, we have been regulated on the AC usage. I have come with terms with it though now. What do I do? Reading and listening to music are the two things I love doing and I try to materialise most on that. However, recently, with the amount and frequency of power failure my mom and I have developed a great habit of chatting. Usually we hardly, just normal stuffs. But we are getting more time to talk, talk about anything on earth and she will fan me and I will fan her. Its like going back to the good old days.

Hi mimpi, Just enjoy the chatting session with mom dear. I think we are getting less time for conversing with dear ones so make use of it. Here we are facing long duration power cuts that also in day time. Nothing can be done but to tolerate. Thank you very much dear. Have a nice day.

Hi Sreekala! If the power failure falls in the morning and afternoon, I usually read books and do the household chores. But if it is in the evening, my family usually gather outside our home. We cook food together, talk about anything and wait until the electricity will come back. But if my children are so sleepy then I will be fanning them until they fall asleep because it's so hot inside our room if there's no air conditioner. Then it's the time I will sleep as well.

Hi meticulo, It means the power failure time is bonding moments for you with family members. I am glad to hear the same. If kids are around and they are sleepy at the time of power cuts, it is worst experience for parents. We have to fan them with paper so that they can sleep without getting disturbance due to the power failure. I too do the same if the power went in the middle of sleep. It is really annoying to break our sleep but we may wake up from sleep automatically due the hot when power off. Thank you very much for the participation. Have a nice day.

Hi Sreekala :) Well the temperature tipped off the scale here at kharagpur last day, 48 degrees Celsius! It was so hot and hot breeze(loo) was blowing and it was sickening to go out without adequate protection and not alright to stay under the sun for long, we need to take care, hot breeze can be really fatal..! We are required to drink lots of cold water, i live in a hostel and it's kinda ok inside the room, it is at least bearable hehe, i have noticed the water coolers in our hostel, the compressor keeps on running and the water is freezing cold! I guess the guys here have pampered with the thermostat so that the compressor keeps running all time and we get cold water without the thermostat sensing it should turn off with the limit set, so we are having very cold water here, but yeah we should take care coz immediately after coming from the glare of the sun we ought not to take such cold water, it can make us feel dizzy..! The conditions are really bad over here, oh well seems like i am getting off topic here. We seldom have power cuts here, even if we did, just for a maximum of 5 minutes, for good..! We would be scorching in the room if we don't have electricity and we really really need the cold water, it is so hot here that we are not much considerate about the electricity and with the cooler pampered which keeps on running all day like an air conditioner running all day and never shutting down, a lot of electricity being utilized but we are doing it for the cold water, it is in huge demand, sometimes i am unable to drink it right after filling up the bottle, it chills my teeth. hehe... 48 degrees was the recorded highest in this season but i sure hope it doesn't go further beyond this please, there are no coolers or air conditioners provided in the hostel and we have to bear the heat outside, we need to take care so that we don't fall ill, have lots of water so that we don't get dehydrated, dehydration is an issue here, each year many get sick due to it and are admitted to the campus hospital, i just wish conditions get better and please we don't want a power cut here, we are desperate for it :P Like your place, 44 degrees is an average temperature here, take care Sreekala. :)

Hi Voldrox, 48 is too high and I can understand the problem of heat waves. Here the temperature is 44 then also the heat waves are not bearable even after 6 PM. You please take care and drink enough water and stay inside in the day time. Thanks for the descriptive reply. Take nice care and have a great day.

Hi Sreekala, well yes it is quite much, oh the heat waves seem to be more ferocious over there, here it depends, some days are much worse than others but on the whole it's ok, only few days but still it is far from safe to go out in the sun, the rays are very harsh. You have a nice day too..

If I am in the office caught with power cuts or brown-out sometimes frustrating especially if I need something to fax or I need to reply an email. Sometimes I missed a client to chat with for that's the he or she is available. So I stopped with my work and try to befriends with my officemates catching up what's the latest. Of course about what's in and what's out in fashion, entertainment and politics as well. Sometime to the extent of sharing ideas and opinion. Some get into debate. I would share also my ideas and opinions. I think it is interesting to experience it and educational as well. But if I am home caught with power cuts, I don't usually complain because the light company informed the consumer of the schedule of power cut ahead of time. If it is during the night I would missed my soap series in tv. I would try to be creative with my niece and nephews singing our favorite nursery rhymes and our favorite novelty songs. We also play with our shadow forming different forms and shapes. If it is during the day, we sometimes go out playing street games or climbing trees picking some fruits. Usually power cuts is 1 to 2 hours daily but just recently we suffered power cuts for 12 hours from 2 pm to 2 am. That was due to the street post was broken down. The temperature in our place is 28 to 30 degree Celcius.

It is very hot in your country, here in the Philippines we also experience power failure because of the drought the water level in our dam is not enough to generate electricity. The hottest temperature that we experienced so far is 40 degree celcius. It is annoying and torture when the temperature is very hot and you don't have electricity. We experienced power failure for 2 hours but in some places the power outage is longer but we are shock that our electric provider added charges. When we received our bill we are angry because our bill is very high and it seems we have aircon in our bill this month. We don't have aircon and we experienced power failure but why our bill is very high than what we expected.

Hi adeena, First of all welcome to mylot. Thank you very much for the detailed reply. Here, just now the power back after an hour and yesterday we had two hours power cut then it again went for one hour. I am not able to give comments to my friends even. Yesterday we also had conversations with colleagues because the duration of power cut was too long. I think the power cut is fixed on particular time then we can do our work accordingly, but hers it is unexpectedly. The temperature is too hot and it is frustrating if there is no power. In your place’s temperature 28-30 is bearable, I think. But we can’t do any other works if there is no power. Thanks again and have nice day.

Hi agv, I too surprised to know that your bill so high even though there is frequent power failure. There must be some problem with your meter reading, if it happens in our place we can give complaint to the authority and they are taking proper care and correct if there is any wrong reading in meter. I think you an also approach the authority for getting higher bill than expected. Thanks for dropping and have a nice day to you too.

A lack of power certainly is nice sometimes, especially when at work! It's nicer if it's a sunny day. It makes it so that you can't even tell the power is out. It makes a puny little light bulb seem so trivial. It's a different story when it's a dark and gloomy night, but that's what candles are for! An internet tablet with 12 hours of battery life is nice too ;)

Hi saskuach, Welcome to mylot. I am happy to get 'your first reply' in mylot. But please don't stick with the number 1, post more replies so that your number will increase and your earnings too. I understand how the power cut is useful or nice in work place. But due to high temperature I just can’t enjoy the power cuts. It is annoying situation when there is no power in hot temperature. If it is in winter, then we can enjoy the free time in office. Thank you very much for your reply. Have a nice day.

We have power cuts here too....but I have enough work around the house and my kids to keep me busy. There is a generator for the apartment complex and the fans and one light in each room (not that we need that during the day) works in each room. I usually finish all my cooking in the morning when there are power cuts are rare. I read the newspapers and books every single day (power cut or not). Usually during a power cut, I try to spend time with my little one and try to keep him occupied with something constructive and other cleaning stuff at home.

Hi SV, I know if we are at home there must be lot of works to do. But in office, in summer season, nobody works if there is no power. (The inverter is sufficient for one/two fans if the lights are on then only one fan will work. Here the light is needed in day time too). I am not a regular reader of newspaper only I read the headlines everyday at home. If there is no work in office I am spending that time in mylot, so no room for reading (lol). But the power failure is helping me to update with the news. Thank you so much and have a nice day.

Hi Sree! Power failures could be telling and can upset our rhythm. We need to utilize our time during power cuts and reading something is one of the better ideas. Reading helps us a lot and we feel satisfied once we read something useful. I would also resort to reading in case of power cut and in case, I just cannot log on to my PC. Else, I would call up my friend and would talk to them on phone to know about their well being. Have a great day!

Hi deepak, I think you know it better about the situation in this place. In our area it is worst (office place) everyday there is no power in 2-3 hours in day time. I do not know about the situation in night. Now I am reading newspaper everyday. Calling friends and chatting with them is another way of passing time. We can show our love and concern to them and make them feel happy too. Thank you very much for the participation. Have a great weekend.

WE've been having rotating power failure in our country too. It is really sickening. We can't do anything in the office without electricity. If there is no air-condition we can't really afford to work efficiently. And without electricity how can the office equipment run? We can't finish any job without those gadgets so we in the office just chat with each other while waiting for the one hour power failure to pass. It is too hot in our place. Yesterday is the hottest ever recorded at 36 Degrees Celsius. Imagine what ordeal we underwent when the power failure came and stayed for an hour.

Hi salonga, I thought that only our country is facing this worst experience with electricity. Now I realized that more or less all are facing the power failure. In hot season we can do nothing if there is no power. Here there was no power for more than one hour and just back now, it gone without any prior notice. Thanks and have a nice day.

We don’t have power failures all that often but when they come everybody is usually at a loss as to what to do with themselves with no T.V. or computers. I like to do one of the things I love and that is read. It may have to be with a torch or a candle but I manage. Reading is my escape anytime! Another good thing is play a board game or cards with the family and maybe...Just maybe...We could talk!

Hi Paula, Some other person also told me that in your place there is less power failures and I think it is great. Here in winter we don’t have power cuts often but in summer the situation is frustrating. With a high temperature and hot waves just can’t sit inside or outside at the time of power failure. Nothing can be done but read books or call friends for passing the time. If I am at home then I can do some other stuff but in office options are less. Thank you very much for dropping. Have a great weekend.

Power failures suck. You should be prepared for them at any time. You never know when one will strike. Should have a few coolers that you can throw some bagged ice into to put your refrigerated food in, have battery powered little appliances like a tv, flashlight, radio, or a cell phone. Surge protectors with battery backup (they give you a little extra power incase you lose electricity). If possible a generator, and if you've got the money well why not get solar? Even if there's not a power cut its still a good idea, its going to save you some money on your electrical bills. oh and as far as the bordedom. Its a good time to do the things you wouldn't be interested in doing if you had a tv, and internet. Like cleaning, and organizing, balancing a checkbook, writing a poem, whatever.

Hi redhotpogo, There is no fixed time for power cut and that is the main problem. Some states are fixing time for power cuts which is appreciable and we can do works accordingly. I think we have to think about the solar energy very seriously. Thank you so much for the participation. Have a great weekend.

Hi mackybevs, Welcome to mylot. You people are also facing the worst experience with power cuts. How is the weather there now? I think it must be hot now. I live in the interior and electricity blackouts are common happenings here. I think it is largely due to the old power house which has not been upgraded to meet the increasing demand of the local population. The other night the lights went off throughout the whole district and we went through another round of anguish, embarrassment and exercises in pointing fingers and assigning blame. When there is no power I have to fall back on my reading as this passion of mine has been neglected since being lured to the internet. I still have much reading to catch up as I barely touch on my books nowadays.

hi sreekala I live in California in the uS and we seldom have power failures here except in some summers when it stays unusually hot then we face what is called rolling brown outs where electricity is cut back during the busiest times of the day electrically speaking. Also we have had occasional black outs for a few hours after a heavy earthquake tremor that caused a bunch of transformers in my home town to all burn out at the s ame time. no we are most fortunate here in the US. I have heard from other mylotters that they have the same problems you are having. Right now its raining off and on here and the temperature maybe dropped to 60 or65 but early it was about 75. so pretty nice April weather in california.

Hi Hatley, How are you? I hope you are doing fine. I think you are lucky because you don't have power failures often. If there are natural calamities then it is beyond the control of human being. We have to wait for some days to restore the transformer. Here it is worst and the temperature is so high and heat waves are also going on. Yesterday there was no power for three hours and today for one hour and it may go again (am expecting anytime). Take care and have a nice day.

This is a good question. We have to face power failures in my city once in a while. It is fine when I am at work becuase we have generators at work. It is a big problem when the power failure happens at night. Nobody in my house will sleep at that time. All of us get up and wait in the sit out of the house waiting for the power to be back. It is horrible especially because I live in a place which is very hot. AC is must for sleeping. I can't really thinking of anything to be done during power failure other than chatting with family members.

Power outages are common here too. However, it depends on when it happens. If it happens at night I light a couple of candles, get some things done I need to do, or try and go to bed. I shut down my computer or put it in sleep mode to preserve the battery, so I can use it if I need it. It comes in handy for example, if I need to charge my cell phone to make an emengercy call or something of that nature. In the summer its very difficult to deal with. If power is out for a couple of hours, that's fine, but if its longer, then I have a problem. I can't literally breathe if I get too hot and have to find ways to cool down. During the day I can go swim, or something, but at night I have other problems. keeping the apartment as dark as possible helps keep it cool.
