Help me pick the best cake for hubby's retirement party?

Strawberry Cream Cake - Not the best time of the year now for strawberries!!
Canada
April 20, 2010 2:30pm CST
Hubby's last day (evening) of work will be this coming Friday. 35 yrs working for the Quebec L*iquor Board!! He says he's looking forward to it but I know he's nervous and stressed out. He gets along very well with the people he works with, they joke all the time, so surely he'll miss them. Family is coming over on Saturday to celebrate his retirement. Hubby is only 52 yrs old. My guess is he'll enjoy the summer and he'll probably want to get out of the house come winter! Just so you all know, Im supporting him, Im happy he'll be home but wont expect him to start cooking or cleaning house. I wont push him to stay home NOR get a little job....He can do whatever he wants. Now my question is: whats your favorite cake? Hubby likes all cakes its me who cant make up my mind on which one to make.......from scratch!! Im not asking for recipe ,I can google it!!

What about drawing a few pictures of liqu*or bottles on top? My hubby's favourite is Black Forest. My favourites are anything with chocolate in them.

Ok, now I see the picture you posted of a strawberry creme cake and I'm drooling over it now. Strawberry shortcake is very simple, not too filling after a big meal and most everyone will like it. Very good one in my books.

Hello Annie! Mmm, Im sure I could manage to draw l*iquor bottles on top. Interesting idea, I wouldnt have thought of that. Anything with chocolate sounds good, doesnt it? Yes the strawberry shortcake sounds good but the strawberries I can buy right now arent that tasty, thats why I was asking for ideas. You gave me a good idea with the drawing of bottles on top! Thanks !!

i've always liked the cookies and cream cake with small oreos at the side covered with cream. I could eat several of those and not get full. Lol.

I am more of a pie person, myself. I used to bake spice cake and used a recipe for penuche frosting. That was very good. So are ice cream cakes. How many are you serving, do you know?

My "special occasion dessert" when I was first married was a sponge cake, baked in a tube pan. Filled it with ice cream and put a layer across the top. Covered all of that with whipped topping and strawberries. Not a big enough dessert for more than about six, so I asked.

I like pies also but I cant make the crust, its always hard. So I usually buy crusts for my pies. I'll be making apple pie for my dad as he cant have sugar and I make sure theres not that much sugar in the crust I buy and I make my own applesauce. I thought we'd be about 10 but more and more are calling to come over, so we might end up being over 20 if they keep on calling haha!! I guess I'll have to bake more than one cake now.....a few pies and some cupcakes!! Why did you ask how many......any ideas??

My personal favorite kind of cake is Marble Cake! Its what I always ask for, or make for others if something special is going on and someone wants me to bake a cake for them. As for the frosting you definitely have to use Buttercream Frosting, nothing can beat it, and it'll go well with any kind of cake that you make, from carrot to vanilla and everything in between.

OOOh, carrot cake sounds good tonight, but I always put cream cheese frosting on it. My recipe has crushed pineapple in it as well. My hubby would enjoy that.

The one that springs to mind (and I loved to bake it) is a Three-Tier Courting Cake with cream, lined with strawberry halves. If you have heard of a Victoria Sandwich it is rather like that...but with the added layer and the strawberries. Now, where's my mixing-bowl... Good luck to you and your hubby, you deserve it my friend.

Excellent! You have probably realised through googling that the Victoria Sandwich forms the basis of many a decent cake lol. That's the beauty of it. You can add whatever you like to the mix, anything from lemon drizzle with whisky, coconut or chocolate. Have fun! I'm sure you will!

Well, I got that particular recipe sent to me by my Aunty many, many years ago. With it being on a piece of paper I eventually lost it, unfortunately. The whisky did involve one of those little bottles, I remember that much...and no, I didn't swig any first!

Hi Magical Bubbles I am like your husband but I like & eat all types of cakes from whichever region/country. I think in that case the perfect pick would be if you bake your cake yourself - and rather than go as per the set standards ( recipes) like chocolate, vanilla, fruit, strawberry etc I suggest try your own concoction - maybe a mix of all these- or make small sized different cakes - a little bigger than pastries, each having different ingredients. That will actually show yr true love for him - and you can watch his reaction then - but make it a surprise don't tell anyone about it either !!!!

Oh I forgot- if making too many cakes is a problem then bake a large cake with many layers of different ingredients/types- Take your pick which is the easiest for you - but whatever you bake keep that a secret surprise for him and family My daughter at times uses this link below for variety http://www.ifood.tv/network/layer_cake_mix/recipes Since the ready mixes mentioned are not available in this country she makes her own layers but uses this as a guide!!! you can try that

The link will be useful also and I have ideas from everybody here so I know what to do now. What a good idea!!!! Of course I'll bake it from scratch, Im not wanting to buy one already made. Thank you !!!

White, yellow or spice always seems to be a hit, then offer different ice creams or other topping for personal choices.

You're so right, I love a spicy cake myself. Good idea to let them pick the toppings.....fruits or ice cream or different icing maybe? Thanks!

My favorite cake of all time is cheese cake. Perhaps having a pie as my favorite cake makes my opinion significantly valid compared to everyone else? I always liked Red Velvet, as well as Rainbow cake. My mom usually makes rainbow cake for the family on either Easter or 4th of July. Wait, to day is 420 isn't it? I bet rainbow cake looks mighty trippy when under the influence of...err, you know.

I like a really good white cake with whipped cream topping and fresh fruit for filling. Strawberry short cake style yum! It's also not so heavy, sometimes cakes are just too much after or during a party with a lot of food.

I know about too much after a meal but we wont eat it right after the meal but later on as more people are calling me to find out if they can drop by for the dessert. I like the idea of fresh fruits also.....!! Thanks

I would suggest something light, with nutural colors. Something that is celebetory, but at the same time it needs to be encouraging to him that you support him and everything. He may be ending a 35-year-coreer, but it he has a full life ahead of him still.

You put into words exactly how I feel. I want to make it special to let him know that Im here to support him because I'll go through the trouble of baking one instead of buying one. And you're right, he is ending a 35 yr career but not the end of everything else. Thats why I want to make it special, something Ive never baked before. Thank you so much!!

MMMMMMM cake. I love to bake cakes from scratch, the best one is from the back of the hersheys baking cocoa, it's chocolate and wow is it good..Then you could either have the chocolate frosting it calls for or go wild and make peanut butter buttercream, theres a combonation that'll make your mouth water.. congrats on the retiring...enjoy

I never noticed there was a recipe on the back of the Hersheys Cocoa....I guess I'll have to find out what its all about, but I have a feeling it must be the most delicious chocolate cake since they're the specialists when it comes to chocolate....right? Thanks, I'll have a look!!

My favorites have always been brownies and black forest. And something closer to traditional taste would be 'bika ambon' with screw-pine-leave flavor.
