Plucking hairs in nose and biting nails

India
April 21, 2010 1:36am CST
I travel extensively by train, if there is no train then by bus, but I see some men plucking their nostril hairs and some men and women biting their nails, may be unaware of this habit. My younger son, now 35 had the nail biting habit, whenever he sat idle he will bite his nails. My wife used to apply some ‘neem’ paste on the nails, neem has a bitter taste, but it failed to help. Now a day he doesn’t bite the nails, I can’t guess how it was gone. Have you marked people doing this, or any other such thing? Have or had you any such habit, how you got rid of that, please share. Happy posting, cheers Prof

hi p rofessor I have not seen the plucking of nose hairs but sure have seen people, mostly men, digging crap out of their noses and that turns' my stomach to see.yuck. I have had and still do at times a bad habit fo chewing on a lock of my long hair. when my husband was alive he would snap me out of that habit by asking quite innocently,ha ha,"Does that taste good?" that would embarrass me and for awhile i did remember not to do that. but now I have been a widow for a long time, and when I get stressed I find myself reverting to this annoying and unseemly habit of chewing on a lock of hair. I still do do this but at least not in sight of others so half broke the habit.

For as long as I can remember I've always had the habit of biting my fingernails. I don't have any clue as to where this habit stems from. However, I do know that at this point in my life, the habit tends to manifest itself as a nervous habit. I find that the majority of the time when I will bite my nails is when I am under stress that is greater than what I usually have to deal with in my day to day life. Sometimes I will notice my hands going toward my mouth when I am not under a lot of stress, but in those situations I am usually able to control my compulsion.

I don't pluck the hairs from my nose either. It does sound rather painful to do it. I figure the hair will just fall out by themselves. I don't really bite my nails. I figure it is very gross because I use my hands to do stuff and there might be dirt getting stuck in my nails and can make me sick if I bit them.

I pluck my nose hairs sometimes but i make sure that no one is watching. I usually cut the hair with a scissor but there are occasions that a hair or two is already coming out. I

I am in the habit of biting myself too. It happens when I'm doing nothing. I can't resist seeing my fingernails and really bite them even if they're still short. I've had this habit since I was young. Lately, I've been trying to stop this habit because it makes my fingernails look ugly. They say it's a sign of low self-esteem. As to the plucking of nose hair, I think it is rather painful.

My boyfriend tends to bite his nails. Usually when he's nervous. I just usually try to get him to stop whenever I catch him. As for me, when I was a kid, I had the habit of sucking my thumb. To try to get me to stop, my parents would put Tabasco sauce on my thumb. This didn't work. I would just wipe it off and go back to sucking my thumb. I hate that Tabasco sauce to this day now.

Bad habit they say is hard to die. If they are young the chances of correcting them is easier. My youngest daughter who is 12 years year has newly acquired this odd habit of shaking her head when she speaks. This only happen this year. Each time when I see her doing it I will tell her off but she keeps doing it. I told here that if she do it again I will spank her. She will just move away and avoided talking to me. I don't know whether there is any underlying health issue that makes her shake her head whenever she talks.

I have not heard much of people plucking their nose hair, but I certainly have heard and seen a fair bit of people "digging gold" in their noses. Still, I feel both acts are disgusting, especially if others catch a glimpse of it. On the other hand, nail biting is quite commonly seen in the community. I work in a pharmacy, and I know of certain products that can be put onto nails to discourage the habit, due to the taste ("Neem" is such a product, like you already mentioned). However, in my opinion, the best way to curb nail biting is to cut the nails often so as to keep them short. If the nails are short, you will find it hard to bite them. Thankfully, I do not have any of those bad habits you mentioned.......

Bad habits I should say. I would not want to see anyone biting nails. In fact my little twins used to have that habit but I was able to break that. And plucking hairs from nose. Yuck! I wonder if these people did not study good manners and right conduct!

I'm glad I don't have any problems with bad habits and mannerisms such as biting nails and plucking hair oh God, not in public please. Anyway my kid always bites his nails and whenever I catch him doing that, I automatically tell him to stop. I don't really yell but sometimes I've to admit, my voice starts to raise. Anyway it's annoying to see my kid do it. I don't know how to totally get rid of it, but I think constant reminders telling him to stop it has lessened the problem.

Hi Prof. I do pluck my nostril hairs, too but never in public because it's not proper. I used to have the habit of nail biting when I was still in my grade school years but I was able to stop this habit because my brothers told me it's bad. I also used to have a habit of moving my nose sideways and in a circular form, I can't really explain how I did that but I was able to, LOL! I stopped this habit before entering to my high school years because it looked so ugly when I realized it after seeing myself doing it in front of the mirror. Now, I have a habit of pressing my nose and it would create a sound, just like breaking your fingers, LOL! It's weird but I just love the feeling and I only do this twice up to thrice per day. I also can create weird sounds at my toes, again, just like breaking your fingers but unlimited! Anyway, to get rid of some habits you have, we should realize the things that it could do good and not so good for us. Going back to plucking you hair nostrils, it feels good that no one would ever see hairs hanging out but doing this in public is so inappropriate, it's no different from picking your nose. Nail bite has this feeling of satisfaction by being able to cut your nails without even using a nailcutter! :) Then again, it also looked improper and unprofessional when seen in public plus it will have a bad effect from our teeth sooner or later according to my dentist.
