Wearing gold chain and rings

India

I always wear a thick gold chain and two gold rings. If sold the chain of pure gold can fetch me around 85 thousand rupees at the present rate. The rings have yellow sapphire and red coral as gem stones, they are my birth stones, lucky for me, I am wearing them for over 40 years. I will never sell the rings. Well why I wear the gold chain? Not to show my wealth certainly, I like to wear some gold, my wife, sons, and daughter in laws, grandkids too wear. But there is some purpose behind. Long back while travelling, somebody stole my baggage. Those days there were no cell phones or credit cards. I could sell my gold chain at 20% less of market price. Do you or your spouse or family members wear gold, gemstones? Will you not sell them in emergency, is it not a form of saving. Please share your views. Happy posting, cheers Prof

Hi Prof, It's really nice to hear that you did it for emergency and let you know I also believe that jewelery are the savings. I have lots more to wear but I don't like so much. My mom says whenever one have any problem, one should sell it to avoid debt. It's a great saving and in emergency, gold and diamond is what help us a lot. If necessary I will definitely sell them. Sell only what you need to live on whenever necessary. Thanks.

That is a very smart thing to do. But in my case I won't get too much for the metal that I am wearing. I don't like the color of gold , so I wear silver.. So I won't get much for that. lol. But I do wear diamond ear-rings. I also wear a blue-sapphire and diamond ring. So that will get me some good amount Nice topic yet again!

I normally wear diamond earrings, a big diamond nosering,a diamond ring, two gold bangles a mangal sutra gold chain and a yellow cotton thread with another mangal sutra attached to this .This is my regular wear. And everyone is so used to seing me with this that once when I had removed my nosering for soem time people started asking me why I looked very dull and tired. But when I go on a train journey, I would remove all the diamond ornaments, the thick chain with mangal sutra and wear only the thread round my neck, some gold covering or metal bangles and simple pearl or plain gold earrings. This is a safeguard during travel. As for selling them in an emergency, I should say that I pray such an occasion never rises and I am able to handle the crisis with the money I have. THe purpose of this is that they had been given to me by my parents on the occasion of my marriage along with so many other thing s an d I still wear them.We women obviOusly think that our looks get enhanced with some jewellery on our person.

Hello Sir, Earlier if a man wears gold chain then it is considered as vanity (I am telling about my native place and the time of my childhood). I clearly remember about one famous writer’s opinion about wearing a gold chain. He exactly said the same reason you have mentioned in your discussion. He was a journalist and traveling much and there were no cell phones at that time. According to him wearing a chain is for using/selling emergency. Now the situation is changed and gold chain is common among men. It can be considered as status/wealth symbol or as an ornament. My hubby is also wearing a gold chain which he got from my parents at the time of our marriage (It is a custom in our place to give gold chain to the bridegroom at the time of marriage).

I am imagining you with a think gold chain and two rings. You should wear that if you like that. It is normal that women wear gold chains, but it is not must for a men to wear gold chain. Sometimes people consider it as a status symbol or wealth symbol. Neither my father nor my husband likes to wear gold chain. I think a think gold chain looks good on a men, but a thick gold chain is ugly. It is fine for a middle aged person or old person, but of course not for young guys.

I am wearing a gold necklace. It's a gift from my parents when I reach 21 years old. I was so touched and feel happy for receiving such a meaningful gift and blessing from my parents. It signified that I am a grown up and should be independent from that day onwards. It's good to wear some gold, base on your comment. When we are lost in somewhere we are unfamiliar and having no means of getting cash. We can sell the gold and get some cash to meet our emergency needs.

Ya, we don't know what will happen to us down the road. So, it's good that we always get ourselves prepared ahead. Who knows with the gold in hand, we could even save the lives of ourselves or other people. You are most welcome and have nice day!

you won't that great amount of money if you don't sell the pure gold chain! Just kidding...Actually some of our belongings are more valuable than money. I wear a gold chain with my lucky stone hanging on it. I don't hope the gem will bring wealth for me. I just hope it can bless me with health and safety. This is the only jewelry I never take off since the day I put on. I keep the other jewelry in the safe all the time. My husband dislikes any jewelry and he took off his wedding ring the third day after the wedding ceremony. I never expect that he bought a gold chain for my son on his 21st birthday. I gave him a red ruby pendent as a gift the same day. I hope he is always happy, safe and healthy wearing his lucky gemstone Happy posting gold, cell phone, chain, chain wearing, credit card

good for you, but on a personal note i am not fond of wearing any jewelry. bizarre as it is i found uncomfortable wearing them. besides security risk my skin reacts also to certain jewelries (allergy), i more happy to wear things that would render practical usage such as wrist watch and a compass.

dear professor, i love wearing my thin gold chain with a cross pendant. but sad to say it was snatched while i was on my way to a government office while i was just walking. the police station was just a block away but still they were not able to catch the thief. now am content with silver. but i have mostly bangles and bracelets. i was surprised at the reason where you said it is for emergency use. but analyzing some more, i know you have a point there. but i pray you dont get a day when you would sell it. am sure its far more sentimental now to you. happy mylotting, ann

The only jewelry that I wear on a regular basis is my wedding set and also a tiny gold hoop earring in one of my ears. Is there any way that I would part with any of this in case of an emergency? No, my wedding band and my engagement ring are far too important to me to ever give up, even in the case of financial hardship. Now, with the gold hoop, I would possibly sell that if I needed the money to get out of a terrible financial situation.

I'm really scared to wear any jewelries, gold rings or etc. if not applicable to where I'm going. I know it's look fashionable or whatever but nowadays you don't know maybe that would be your last day to live because of wearing several gold rings to some public places. So you just need to be careful, if it's not really needed you can just kept it rather than expose it but the danger is behind you.

of course. we buy gold things for many purposes some people buy gold to use as jeweleries. and some people buy gold to save money. (because the price of the gold is increasing day by day) i think it doesn't matter if you sell them for a very urgent case. :-)

In India a lot of men wear gold in some form or the other. I never wear any gold on myself.i had a wedding ring which I have taken off after my divorce. It depends on personal choice and as you say a practicality with it.I read somewhere a joke regarding men wearing jewellery.Raj Kumar, the veteran Hindi film actor was known for his direct talk.He once happened to meet Bappi Lahiri, the renowned musician who is very fond of wearing loads of jewellery, and on seeing his jewellery remarked ' Gehene bahut accha hai, lekin mangal sutra kahan hai ? ' ( The jewellery is nice, but where is the mangalsutra? ) note: for those of my friends who are not from India.Mangal sutra is a gold chain made with black beeds and a plate like pendent which is worn by the woman after she gets married. It is put around her neck by her husband on the day of the wedding in front of the sacred fire !

It's very pity that you have to sell your gold chain at 20% less of market price after you experienced the emergency stole. I don't suggest to sell the gold chain and rings, it's symbol of love, gift when we married or as a birthday gift. It's meanful not only wealth but also the worthy meaning. I like to wear gold rings.
