Please return to your seats.... what if you can't??!?

Our plane had landed for some passengers to get off but we were travelling onward. With fewer passengers on board and no queue, it seemed like a good time to use the toilet. I was just washing my hands when I heard the announcement "Please return to your seats so that we can begin our taxi for take-off". Perfect timing... but I couldn't open the door. I pulled and pushed and banged on the door until a voice said "Are you alright?"... The flight attendant tried (in vain) with a nail file to unlock it from outside & I kept trying from the inside. Eventually a stern voice shouted "Stand back from the door" and the Captain kicked the door in. As I got back to my seat, my husband told me there had been some delay in starting the taxi-ing.... really? I wonder what that was all about?? Have you been locked in the toilet cubicle on a plane (or boat or train... or anywhere else)? How did you get out?

That's never happened to me, but I did forget to lock the bathroom door on a plane once and someone nearly walked in. I was really embarassed! I really don't like going to the bathroom on moving things (planes, trains, buses, etc).

Hi, olisaur. Me neither. I would think that I would fall inside of the toilet, if the bus was moving around. I remember taking a trip to a church on a bus and there was a toilet on the bus. People were using it and I was scared to use it. I thought that I would have fallen into the toilet.. I know what you mean when you say that you don't really like going to the bathroom on moving things. Because I don't like to either.

No, I dont like to either - which is another reason that I took the opportunity to go whilst it was stationary.

Not me, but my husband got stuck in the bathroom in a Wienerwald restaurant in Bremen, Germany on our honeymoon. I'd send you the link to the blog, but the darn site is blocked at work...

I was waiting at the bus station for my mum one evening and someone got locked in the "Superloo" there. Luckily someone heard her shouting but she had to wait a while for someone to let her out. I'd have to be desperate to go in one of those - they're like a big metal box and I imagine you'd have to make a lot of noise to be heard from outside!

Never happened to me. I was traveling with my daughters when they were younger and from the back of the plane I heard Dad Sissy Broke the potty. They had never seen a toilet where the bottom fell away to remove the waste. Who's kids were they I don't know.

Hmm, yes, I can see how they would think it might be broken

Hi, Wizzywig. I have never had this happen to me before. I am glad that you are okay and that no harm was did to you. I have never rode on a plane before either. I hope that this never happens to you again. I know that if I was locked inside a toilet cubicle. I would be very frightened. It would be great if they had an emergency device inside of this bathroom so that if something bad was to happen, then you could be rescued. I hope that you are alright now. Take care.

It was some years ago and I did start to feel a bit claustrophobic. I did travel on planes a few times after but its been 9 years since I've flown and have no imminent holiday plans.

Nothing like that has ever happened to me, but I remember hearing about a woman who was using the airplane toil while in flight when the plane hit an air pocket. This sucked her bottom deeper into the toilet so that she was stuck. They ended up using a ruler to pop her free from the toilet seat. How embarrassing!

OH NO!!!!! That's certainly put me off sitting down on a plane toilet seat again. Having the Captain break the door down was a breeze compared to that. Thanks for sharing.

That is a great story! I have never been locked in any rooms, (just locked out of factories and cars) but my wife was stuck in our bathroom once. I was at work and received a phone call from the local police saying that they were at my house and that my wife was locked in the bathroom. She had just hopped out of the shower and went to open the door and the handle fell apart in her hands apparently. We had just had security screens installed on all of the windows, so she could not even climb out the window. If it had happened a week earlier she would have been able to. Anyway, I thought that it was someone playing a joke on me, but they insisted that they were the police and they said that my two year old daughter had called 000 (The emergency number here in Australia.) We had a new born son at the time, so the police treated the matter as an emergency due to babies needing feeding etc. They said that my daughter had let them into the house and they wanted to know where my tools were kept to that they could pull the door handle off and open the door. I told them where to go and stayed on the phone until my wife was released. It was really hilarious and a story that we have had the great pleasure in re-telling many times over the years!

Thats one smart little daughter. We have 2 doors in our house that have no handles. The mechanism broke so we just removed the whole lot. I'm sure we have new springy-thing mechanisms somewhere out in the garage... we're in the process of a major rid-out so will hopefully find them.

Ah yes, coming up to the "I know everything" stage???? We haven't got as far as the workbench in the garage yet but, at least I know you have some. Maybe you could put a couple of them in that little slot on your PC where that nice little drinks holder pops out & send them to me via cyberspace

She was and still is very clever. Too smart sometimes now that she is ten! I have some springy-thing mechanisms if you cannot find your ones!

I do not remember ever having that happen to me, and I would think it would be something I would remember. When my first husband was ill I got electronically locked in the lobby of a nursing home, and for the life of me, I cannot remember how I got out. So maybe I got locked in a toilet as well, but just cannot recall it.

That was a pretty scary experience . . Had it happen to me, I am sure I have just fainted in fear . . I have a phobia when I am in closed place, meaning, I am claustrophobic. I would never think about it in the first place. . .

I think I would have freaked if I'd had to stay in much longer. My worst claustrophobic experience was an MRI scan for whiplash. horrible!
