Is Flattery Good or Bad? Are most people susceptible to flattery?

Of late I notice that people are being very diplomatic and politically correct when they want to give out their opinion. Many a times they go one step further and if it is in their interest they flatter the person whether he/she is deserving of the praise or not.
Personally speaking I can never praise without a reason. When I see something nice about a person be it a dress or a dish or some work well accomplished , or anything else for that matter I genuinely appreciate and compliment the person, but I cannot do so if it is mediocre or bad. I have seen some people go all out to praise someone who has been average or even below average , even go to the extent of putting down or belittle other more deserving persons in the bargain. Some people are very happy to receive this kind of praise inspite of knowing that they are not worthy of it .What do you think of this attitude? Does flattery make you happy ? are you susceptible to it? or do you hate it when people flatter you to get something from you ?
Do you sometimes use flattery yourself or have done it out of need ?

Hi yugasini, I am not sure if you could change your user name.I guess you will have to ask the admins abt it.I am a little doubtful about it though...Yes I changed my profile pic, got bored of the last one though it had a lot of nice memories...all the best and have a great weekend

I don't mind compliments necessarily as long as they are sincere and the person doesn't have some other objective in mind, but if they're trying to get something out of me, it doesn't go very far...

And I can handle direct talk as long as it isn't worded like an attack and it's fair and honest. What I can't handle is me talking honestly to somebody else when I fear that the message won't be well received.

Flattery is the next level of appreciation.I do not think that there is anything wrong in faltering anyone you like as it definitely boosts up their morale.
In my case I have seen miracles happening in my life just by saying to my wife
"You look terrific today honey".

LOL that is different balasri...praising your wife or children is a way of life and not to be compared with the kind of flattery most people indulge in when they want some favors from you.I am all for flattering those you love and feel close to ...

Hi Kiran,
people are always right to give their opinion. Politicians generally flatter the people. But people are not so foolish what the politicians think . In right time they give the correct verdict. I personally don't like flattering. For personal gain I also don't want to be flattered. Actually I hate flattering.

But there is a saying that like people get like politicians...I too agree that it is not nice to flatter people for personal gains..
