Sometimes it really pays off!

About a week ago, my husband and I were picking up some groceries and miscellaneous items we needed when we went to the electronics department of the store to price home sound systems. We already had a sound system at the time, but not all the speakers were working. It was a little bit older and obviously needed some repairs. It was one of those things where we were planning on getting a new one eventually if we found a phenomenal deal, but if not we would be fine with keeping the one we already had. You probably guessed it...my husband fell in love with one of the systems. I couldn't blame him, though - the price was right! It was on sale, but I thought it was probably on clearance since the price was marked so low. After a closer look, the model we were interested in was marked down to a clearance price because it was a discontinued item. That price was also for the floor model. That was fine with us because the floor model was in excellent condition with exception of a little dust here and there - LOL! We agreed to purchase the floor model at the discounted price when we were informed that the label was on the wrong item. The item we wanted to buy was actually a regular item (not soon-to-be discontinued), and we could purchase it for $75 more, which was apparently still a discounted price. If you were in my situation, what would you do? Would you purchase the system for an additional $75 since it was still a good deal even though the item was marked incorrectly in the first place? Would you just walk away? Have you ever come across a similar situation? Well, here is what happened in our situation... I thought it was ridiculous to pay $75 more for the sound system simply because the store made a mistake. It wasn't our fault the item was marked incorrectly, so we walked away without making the purchase. On our way home, I called the store headquarters to make sure they were aware of the situation. To my husband and me, the outcome didn't matter either way because we weren't set on buying a home sound system, but we wanted the headquarters to know the situation regardless. The lady I spoke with at headquarters was extremely apologetic and kind, and she immediately called the store responsible for the mix up while I waited on hold. I was told I would receive a call back from the store manager the next day. As a result, my husband and I were able to purchase the home sound system the next day for the price that was incorrectly listed the day before. I'm always willing to wait for a good deal, but that was definitely a deal of a lifetime. We got the sound system for over $150 off - half of the regular price! I'm glad the outcome was in our favor in the end. I would feel horrible if someone lost their job due to the situation, but I was very pleased that we got such a great deal. Please share your thoughts and thanks in advance!

You are right. It wasn't your fault that the store marked it incorrectly. I would have argued and walked away too ...without buying the set. I'm not sure if I would have called the headquarters myself...but my husband is the kind who would. I'm glad you called...because things worked out in your favour after all:) I don't think someone would have lost their job but they probably had their salary reduced or something. But it was their job to make sure of the price before the item was tagged, right? We once had a similar issue with a set of encyclopedia we had bought for our son. It was sold as a set and we got it for a good rate straight from the company (not other dealers). Around 2 years later, we were attending a book exhibition at our son's school and guess what? We find the same books sold separately at a huge discount. My husband checked and they told him it was the regular price of the book. This was a different company selling the book. My husband shot off an email to the company that originally sold us the set of books. Instead of being grateful that we had found someone selling it at a lower rate, the manager's reply was very rude and he had a few explanations on why it was priced so low at the exhibition (none of the explanations made sense). Turns out, the two companies are sister companies...but that doesn't mean that one company can sell it at a different rate. Anyways, my husband was (and still is ) pretty mad at the whole thing and he refuses to even look at any of the books from the same company even if they are really good.

I'm absolutely shocked at the situation you described because most companies would be so grateful for the information that another company - and in this case, their own sister company - was selling the same product for less. Not only that, but it sounds as if the manager was offended and tried to defend what was going on! Is this company trying to create competition within its own companies? That doesn't make sense to me. Whatever they were doing, they didn't treat your husband right. Your husband didn't have to take out of his own time to kindly write to inform them of what was going on...only to be responded to in an inappropriate manner. I'm not surprised that your husband is upset over it. It would've been nice for you to be able to purchase these books at the discounted rate, but on top of that, the manager didn't really treat your husband with respect or in the least appreciation for the information. It makes me wonder if they get many emails from customers because they handled it in such a negative way. Don't know what company this is, but I wouldn't be buying books from them anymore! Thanks for sharing your situation. I appreciate your response!

Thanks for the BR! The company is quite a famous one....so I'm not coming out with the name. It could probably be the first time this happened. And honestly, I had not even realized the difference in rate. Once I've agreed to a price and bought something...I wouldn't check the price on the same item when I see it at a later stage.

That's normally what I try to do. Once I've bought something, I've committed myself to the price I paid (unless I decide to return it in a timely manner for whatever reason). If I find it cheaper later on by chance, oh well. Apparently, I was meant to buy it at the higher price! That also would mean that I didn't research well enough to find the item at the cheapest price, so I'd better do a good job of it the next time!

I think it is a good decision to let people know when work is not being done properly. Bad signage costs them money. I doubt that anyone lost their job, but I bet it did go in his/her personnel files and may affect whether or not the person gets a raise. Stores need to be accountable for poor service and poor workmanship.

I have to agree with you because I know what it's like on the other end of the spectrum. If I don't perform properly or give my company's clients the service they deserve, I know it'll come back on me. When I expect top-notch performance, believe me, I take it to heart as my own responsibility to provide the same. You can't expect people to give excellent service unless you're willing to give it as well. I'm glad it all worked out in the end. I've heard of people getting written up for mistakes, and the same is true at my company. So many write-up's causes the person to lose their job, so I'm sure that employee who made the mistake may have just gotten a warning or write-up. I don't think anyone deserved to lose their position over it, but it could be a very good learning experience for everyone involved. It goes to show that we all could be a little more careful and pay closer attention to details! Thanks for your quality response, Gerty.

That's terrific! I'm glad you called them. It was their fault, not yours that the price was incorrect. I'm glad you reaped the benefit. : )

I probably would have walked away, too, because I'm living on a tight budget. I bet it was quite a shock to you and your husband when youall found out the price tag was on the wrong item. It would have had me really going at first. I'm just glad everything worked out in you and your husband's favor, though. I just hope youall are really enjoying the new sound system now.

Hi, Kathy! We certainly are enjoying the new sound system on a daily basis! You're right - we were pretty bummed when we found out what we thought was too good to be true WAS too good to be true! However, I'm glad everything worked out in the end. I wouldn't always fight for a good deal like I did this time (because it's just not worth my time in most cases), but I felt that we were entitled to the good deal since we discovered the error! I'm glad the store was fair to us. Thanks for your response!
