Have you ever had to deal with Lyme Disease?

Last June, I had a tick on me. A couple days later, I noticed that I had this bulls-eye shaped mark where the tick was. I went to the doctor and they did a test for Lyme, but it came back negative. They told me it could take a few months or a year for me to get Lyme, if I even will get it. Well, I totally forgot about it until my husband had some bloodwork done and he tested positive for Lyme. Then I started thinking that I had been having symptoms for months, but shrugged them off as getting old and being overweight. Well, come to find out, my sore knees and elbows was from the Lyme - I tested positive this time. I've been on medication for almost 2 months and I'm still having issues. My next step is to go to an infectious disease specialist! I hear all these horror stories about people living with this forever - is that what I've got to look forward to?

i thought antibiotics sorted it out - didn't realise it could last like that. i think you might be best off waiting till you hear what the specialist has to say before expecting the worst though.

I have heard of people dieing from lyme - but that's if it's not caught in the early stages. Normally antibiotics clear it up, but I'm limited to what I can take because of allergies. I'm sure I'll be making the appointment with the specialist next week when this round of meds runs out - I'm still in pain...

no, but I have heard from a friend of mine that there are some special threatments to prevent any further complications!

Years ago my uncle had it, received medication for over a year. I am not close to him so I do not know the details. Usually antibiotics clear up this bacterial infection caused by a bacteria that is hosted on ticks. Even when the actual disease is cleared up the arthritis can persist. Arthritis is generally in the knees. There is discussion, but no proof that there is a type of Lyme disease called Chronic Lyme disease. So I guess the jury is still out on whether the actual disease persists forever.

I have heard that people can suffer pain from this for ever... I sure hope I'm not one of those!! Once you have gotten Lyme, you will always have the antibodies for it, but they will be "dormant". It's just now while my body (and the meds) are trying to get them dormant that I should have pains (I think). It's kinda confusing it seems.
