What do you listen to at work?

When you are at work, what do you like to listen to? Do you listen to audio books, the radio, podcasts, something online, or do you prefer not to listen to anything? Do you listen to the gossip of others? (LOL) What occupies your mind while you are at work?

I like to listen to the radio, I work at home. So it's not a big deal, sometimes I listen to a CD.

Hi there! That's wonderful you get to work from home. I would love to be able to do that, but working outside the home is the incentive I need to get up and get out of the house each day - LOL - so I guess it's a blessing in disguise for me right now. Thanks for sharing!

When I was at work...the only thing I could hear for 3 hours was kindergarten songs or the chatter of little children....besides my own voice!
After the kids would leave for home and I had to work for a couple of hours more, I preferred to listen to nothing and concentrate on my work. Sometimes, my co-teachers and I would listen to something light and melodious on the radio (we have a tape recorder + radio in each class)...especially when we were doing something monotonous like cutting shapes or pictures or painting ...or putting up something.
Gossip...was saved for AFTER we got home and got on the phone...lol. I never spoke about anything personal ...relating to me or someone else when I was at work.

I agree with you that gossip should be left to certain times and places, if it is necessary. I think it's important you viewed your job this way because so much gossip can travel around school, even in the classroom. Good for you that you held to certain standards. I'm the same way as you also when it comes to monotonous jobs. I like some lighthearted, flowing music that actually, I believe, helps me work faster. It's the way I work best! Thanks for your response. Very interesting!

hehe. nice discussion. actually at work, you cannot help but listen to others. and included there is the gossip. it was also really nice to listen. more so, when it is more of interesting. however, tried really not to listen to. because i like my work a lot. and it is not that nice to degrade others.. so what i did is to listen to the saved music in my cellphone and listen to it instead..

I completely agree with you that gossip, especially at work, is very harmful to others. The best way is just to stay out of it. I'm glad you find it enjoyable to listen to music on your cell phone. I love that on most phones, we're able to download and keep music on there so that as long as we have our phones with us, we have all our music too! Thank you for your honest response.

mostly alternative music. and when my co-workers are tripping, sometimes we'd listen to boy band music during breaks. we're almost all the same age with our group so se kind of grew up to these boy band songs. :)
and we do listen to gossip too :) but not intentionally, some people just prefer to talk about their lives in our locker room, thinking it's their private place :)

I'm guilty of listening to gossip also, but not on purpose either. My situation is the same as yours! I like alternative music to listen to sometimes also. I like the variety it provides, but I have to be in the mood for it. I used to listen to boy band music a lot when I was younger and really enjoyed it. I think I might've grown out of it, but there are still some songs of theirs that I really like!

I work at a bank and I guess everything there is prohibited. I cant listen to audio books, the radio, podcasts, and even go online. My work really sucks and soooo boring. Wondering why I cant quit? Actually I'm about to resign this year. I'm just fixing things before quitting. I will look for a job that interest me most and make sure that I will also enjoy doing my work. Happy mylotting guys!

I'm sorry you have so many restrictions on your job at the bank. I don't blame you for wanting to leave, and I hope everything works out for you! To be honest with you, last year I thought I might want to work at a bank since I have several years of accounting/finance experience, but since then I've decided that is not the route I need to go, and you've just confirmed even more reasons why I'm not going to pursue a job at a bank! Good for you for finding something else that you enjoy more. I can tolerate the escrow accounting job I have now since I can listen to whatever I want at work, but the challenge isn't there and neither is the pay, so I'm pursuing something else. It's been tricky, but hopefully I'll get a new "dream" job soon. Thanks for sharing!

I think it depends on where you work. I haven't worked in several years but I worked in telemarketing 12 years ago and like one mylotter said here, I had to listen to the needs of my customer. When I worked for daddy when he was living (he was in Insurance and Real Estate), we could sometimes have a radio on. Most of the time, he couldn't stand a radio and we would just have it on when he wasn't there, lol
. As long as we kept it soft, there wasn't any problem. When I sold Avon, I went door to door and I kept my radio on in the car a lot. When I had my bookstore back in the 80s, I had a stereo/radio combined and my employees and I would play it sometimes very soft. I used to bring Christmas records to play around Christmastime and that was always enjoyable. When I did nails, I worked in a Health Spa and we kept a radio on all the time. I can't stand to be without my music,

Wow, sounds like you've worked in a variety of places. That's really neat! Thanks for sharing. I tend to get tired of listening to the same station on the radio each and every day because it seems to me like they play the same songs over and over again. However, that may not be true of your radio stations. Hopefully they have enough variety for you to enjoy! That's wonderful you like listening. I think especially for your job at the salon, having the radio on is a must because it's that necessary noise that the salon would need. If it's too quiet in a place of business, in my opinion, it can get a little awkward! Since you did nails at the salon, probably the noise will help, and you don't have to feel like you have to start a conversation with your customer because they might be listening to the radio. I'm curious - did you do pedicures too? I love those! (LOL) That's really neat all the places you've worked. Thanks again for sharing!

Yes, I did pedicures. I used to run a special where I charged $10.00 for both a manicure and a pedicure. I would let the cusomer soak her feet in the foot bath while I gave her a manicure. We had exercise equipment at this spa and when it came time for the pedicure, I would let the customer lie on a table while I worked on her feet. I also massaged their feet and legs and they enjoyed it so much! They would just about go to sleep while I did their pedicure, lol
! One thing I enjoyed about being a Nail Tech was that we would talk about different things while I did their nails. Yes, we still talked even while the music was going, lol
.
Thank you for the best response, btw.

When I was still working outside, I can't listen to any music because my work was telemarketing so it demands listening to the need of the client and for me to explain the benefits and feature of my product. Now while I am working in mylot responses, I can listen to my favorite music in youtube while putting my thoughts in discussion.

Hey there! Sounds like you have some great artists you like to listen to. It's nice because it provides some variety. I know what you mean about listening to gossip. I wouldn't want others to gossip about me either, so I agree with you that the best way to stop it is not to participate when people are gossiping about others! Thanks so much for your response.
