Is it a good idea to put on a makeup on the way to work? Even in public?

Japan

In Japan, you can see some women putting on a makeup on the train, on the bus, even at the wheel! Some people think it is rude and others think it is OK. In my opinion, it is OK. They just want to look beautiful but is too busy or not an early bird. (Well, at the wheel, they should not. It's dangerous!) How about in your country? Do women put on a makeup in public like on the train? Do you think it is OK? What do you think?

i guess it is ok, but for me what's not ok is putting makeup when having dinner at a restaurant. only concern in putting on makeup in public is the risk of the person to not apply them properly! heheh. happy mylotting!

I can remember when I was little and my grandma would tell me things like a woman is always ready even if it took her all night to get ready she is ready. She also told me that you never leave the house looking anything but your best. I have to say that I live up to that. I never leave till I am all ready makeup included. I dont think its wrong of others to do it. Just not something I would do. Behind the wheel is never a safe place to put make up on. I have seen women come into the office with lipstick all over and there mascara is all messed up and on their eye and I think to my self damn lady you should have just been late if you come in looking like that. LOL. So if women want to put there make up on in public I say go for it. I like to watch as well it gives me new ideas to try when I am at home.

I've never put on my makeup in public. It just isn't something that ever occured to me to do. I have heard that it is rude but I don't know how many would really agree that it is. I 've seen women putting on make up in public and I don't find it offensive at all. I just figure that they were running late and didn't have time before leaving the house. As for putting it on behind the wheel, that is so so dangerous. I used to work in insurance and there were women who admitted that is what they were doing when they caused an accident!

None of the claims that I handled had fatalities but I didn't handle claims with serious injuries involved so there could have been ones that did. Anything that distracts you when you are driving is dangerous.

wow! they ended up in a car accident! i hope noboby was killed in their accidents.... if they got just a minor dent or something, it is their falt they should take it, but if they....oh....i hope there was no fatal one... x-o

That would be a delightful pass time to watch girls make up themselves in a journey time.May be they have little time before they get off their house and make up is a must for their jobs(reception works). We need not blame them. But I should show my concern on those make up done on wheels as it would end fatal.Well,I have seen ladies touching themselves with comb and little talcum powder when nearing the station in a train journey. That is because they are more keen on presenting themselves neat to others.I think,it is an inborn quality of girls.

Here in America you can see girls (or guys) putting on makeup almost anywhere, doing almost anything while ALSO putting makeup on. I think alot of people don't care about what people think if they see them do it. I don't think having someone put on makeup is a big deal unless it's in the middle of some kind of court proceeding, or in the middle of your vows at the alter when you get married. Those would be totally inappropriate places to do your makeup. . . as is doing it behind the wheel! If you're driving and paying attention to your makeup, who's paying attention to the road? I believe EVERYONE has the right to look as good as they want to, as long as the beautifying process does not put any other humans lives in danger:)

Certian things, yes. I could understand if you look one way without makeup, and then magically transform with it on. Then alot of girls that are like that might not want the secret out. Or I don't know... maybe some guys just don't want to see the process and believe that women are not perfect without it on. All of that is based on opinions. Opinions of one's self, opinions of others, of what's right and what's wrong, and etc. A person cannot live a long and healthy life based on so many opinions. Besides, nobody knows the whole story... what if the girl is on her way to work from a very strict home. She is not allowed to wear dresses or makeup. But in order to keep her job and get good tips as a waitress, she must wear both a skirt and makeup. On the train or in the car is the only place she can put on makeup, and once she is at the resturant she will change into her skirt.... You just never know right:)

i think so too, we never know the behind story of others. so i think we should be open-minded and try to understand others. well, i liked your what if story :) i got an image of the girl working at a restaurant in my mind ;) and her strict mother too. LOL

Oh, in America, i think it is almost the same condition as in Japan. yeah, in some places and occasions you should avoid doing too personal things which people should do at home.

I never take public transportation out here, but I will say for myself that I have put make up on in the car in the past! Warui, ne?! It was either on the way to school or work (but only when the car was stopped of course). In a way, I guess that is still private, but the strangers around you in other cars can see you - hee hee. When I was going to school, I would see girls put make up on in the bathroom, or even in class before it started. But these days, I do it at home - I have kids with me now, so I don't have time or hands to do it anywhere else. And my mom, who is Nihonjin, she would never put make up on anywhere else but home!!! Hee hee.
• Japan
15 May 10
oh, your mother is nihonjin. :) i guess you speak some japanese at home with your mom, right? even at home, it is difficult to put makeup on with your children because children tend to disturb while you doing so. :) With your children and outside...i understand it is impossible. LOL

Yes, we are all Nihonjin (except for my husband, and my children who are half). My Eigo is much stronger, but I mostly understand Nihongo. Well, I put on my make up in about 2 minutes . . . just before the kids wake up - hee hee. It's like a game to me - a sort of race - hee hee!!

I'm okay with it too, putting make up outside why would that be rude? I would just be against it when they are driving because that is very dangerous for themselves and others, they can easily get distracted and get into an accident. But other than than, it is fine. On the other hand, I think it shows that Japanese are very busy people, they work very hard and especially in Tokyo, life is extremely expensive.
• Japan

yeah, exactly, people in japan are so busy. i live in Osaka, which is also a super busy city. it is so expensive to live here in Osaka too! X0

I was riding the bus to school one time and there was a elderly lady sitting opposite of me who was putting her make up on. Two guys was commenting on how talented she was that she was able to do this on a bus I think its fine for people to put on make up in cars as long as they are not the ones driving.
• Japan

yeah sometimes i am impressed by their technics! i'm all thumbs so i would never be beautiful if i were a woman! X-0

In my country, women also do it. Not only on their way to work but also in any public places, like restaurant, office, buses, anywhere. I think for me its unethical since it should be done at home. Please are public places and should not be doing it. Their is a right place to do this stuff.
• Japan
11 May 10
i see. you think they should not do it in public but in private places like at home or in the lady's room. i don't mind seeing them doing it in public. but i understand your opinion. i think their house is a much more appropriate place for them to put on makeup.

My mom used to tell me not to do my vanity stuff in public. She says that it's something you should do at home. It's like putting in your underwear as how she puts it. But now that I'm working, sometimes, I also put some powder, blush and lip tint on the train. I am on the shaft for women so I don't get much uncomfortable since no guys will see the stuff that I'm doing. It's not too bad I think if we're talking about convenience and time-consumption here.

Hi Nesso. Oh yes, that's what I mean. The entire car will is dedicated for women. They usually separate men from women, children, senior citizens and the physically challenged. Oh yes, it's very uncomfortable if you'll do it in front of men and I myself won't recommend that if you have the chance.
• Japan
11 May 10
i see, it is kind like the same. yeah, i am a man and i don't wear any makeup. so i also don't have any chance doing it in front of people of course :)
• Japan
10 May 10
well, the shaft? you mean there is a small space for women on the train? or like in Japan, they make some whole cars for women only in your country? i mean so-called a woman only car :) i think it is uncomfortable to be stared at by some men while you making up. so i do not know whether it is a whole car or just a space, the section where you can make up keeping away from men is a good service for women :)

Ok, maybe I don`t count because I live in Japan, but I have seen this behaviour in other countries as well and I see it as something completely normal. Not everyone has enough time to do all of her or his full makeup before leaving home, and some other people just want to retouch it to keep their faces in a good state, so at least in my case, it doesn`t bother me the least bit

Oh! you live in Japan? i've seen your image somewhere in Japan! but i forget the name of the character...isn't it a penguin or something, right? i think your opinion is the same as mine :)
10 May 10
I wouldnt put my make-up on when I was out as I never leave the house without make-up on, I would be too worried putting make-up on when I was on a train or a bus, as what would happen if I went over a bump? I'd end up with mascara halfway up my forehead or lipstick on my nose! I suppose there is a benefit to putting make-up on outside, at least the light is natural you will be able to see if you have blended it in properly. And anyone who is trying to put on make-up while at the wheel is just stupid, they are asking to cause an accident.
• Japan
11 May 10
i did not notice there is such a benefit! yeah, color can look different when you are under the sun.

Putting make up on public is for me not okay its because there is a right place for that. There's no etiquette if you put make up on public places. Maybe people do that because they're in a hurry but they should fine a place where they can put it, the right way.

I see nothing wrong with it. However I'm annoyed when I see girls putting on makeup in class when they should be studying or at the office when they should be working. I don't mind seeing it in a breakroom, the lunchroom, the bus, whatever. As long as they're not driving or doing something else where it may be dangerous.

Yep and it's distracting to the other people who are trying to study or do work.
• Japan

At school i don't feel distracted unless the person make big noise or i need to make a pair with her. they'll just fail the class. that's it. but at work, i might feel that way. :(

i see your point. yeah, when they do somthing serious like work, or study, what they need to work on is not their appearance at all!

I use a very little make up and I find time to apply it before coming out of my house to go to office. I don't think it is a nice practice to apply make up in train or bus on the way to work. I live in India and I have rarely seen women doing this. I think those women find it difficult to complete the work at home in the morning and find time to dress up themselves.
• Japan
10 May 10
i see, it is rare to see such manners in india. i think women's work at home in the morning is much more time-consuming than men's, right? if i were a woman, it would be a nightmare as i am not an early bird!

I think it is okay to put make up on the way to work. Some even make a retouch on buses or taxi. But usually, I have to put on make up before leaving the house because I am not comfortable fixing my self in a hasty manner, I want something orderly so before leaving my room, I have to fix myself and make sure everything is okay with my face.
• Japan
10 May 10
that is wise of you! and that reminds me of my morning! i am not a morning person and i always have to be in a hurry to leave home! i am a man and i don't have to put on a makeup but i always take a shower in the morning so it is stressful to do everthing in haste! i think i learned the lesson that you should have enough time to fix everything in the morning from your story! ;) thanks!

Hi there...Yes I think it depends on the culture of the country where you're in whether or not it's acceptable to do makeup in public. I guess people here are neutral about it... but for me I don't feel comfortable doing so. If I'm out and I really have to retouch my makeup, I'd do it in a public toilet (that smells good enough for me to last there for at least 5 minutes).
• Japan
10 May 10
Hi, kquiming yeah, i think that is what most women do and all of the women used to do in Japan. doing so at a restroom is a good idea. :) putting on a makeup in public was not acceptable here in japan, but these days some people like me thinks it is Ok.

if they are on a hurry then yes, sometimes i do that inside the bus or train, i dont care if theres someone watching me, its there problem anyway as long as i didnt harm them, if i already run out of time i just go to shower, put on my clothes brush my hair and grab my bag and do the make up inside the bus or train so that when i got to work it looks like im already prepared. i didnt put too much make, i only put lipstick and powder then blush on coz i look pale and just to make myself look good when i step out from bus or train.

I am from Bulgaria and here almost all the girls wear make up all day long.I personally am for the natural beauty and almost don't use any make up because I feel I don't need it.Guys like me just the way I am and they are not afraid to kiss me because of the powder.I hope other girls will also find out make up is not the only thing that makes us beautiful.
• Japan
11 May 10
i see. you prefer the natural beauty :) yeah, i think women can improve their beauifulness in other ways. but i also think makeup is one of the effective ways to make them look beautiful. so i don't care whether they wear makeup or not. if makeup makes them confident, it is good for them. if they feel OK without it, that is good too. well, i think if people think like you, it is very good for girls! because they can save a lot of money for cosmetics and time they spend in the moring :)
