massive oil slick

dear mylotters, i feel that the oil slick is the worst environmental disaster in decades. at that rate of 210,000 gallons a day, the spill could eclipse the worst oil spill in U.S. history. (Associated Press) it is very very frightening, indeed, and one of grave concerns as far as the people can see. migrating birds and others along the shoreline are the first in the path. How long do you think they can contain this? do you agree that they are doing everyting in their power now? do we need to blame anyone? ann

This is indeed a massive disaster and one that surely could have been avoided. From what I have heard, there are 3 companies involved and they are all blaming each other. There seem to be a lot of disasters involving oil recently. This one in the Gulf of Mexico being the worst by far. There was an oil spill a couple of weeks back on the Great Barrier Reef here in Australia. One of the great natural wonders of the world and an area already in danger of dying. A Chinese ship ran aground on it and lost some oil on the reef. I cannot understand how the authorities can let ships go anywhere near these sensitive areas. This followed a large spill just to the south of the reef last year. We do not need oil. It is time for the world (the USA in particular) to stop it's oil greed and look at more environmentally sound ways to generate energy.

I know, it is really sad that something this bad can go on for so long. The area will take years to recover from this mess. If it ever does!

Hi ann, this has happened several times in the past too, we can't do any thing in this matter except ranting, it is really serious matter, the lands near the shore become infertile for years, because they are in power they can do what they want.. Thanks for sharing. Welcome always. Cheers. Prof

Hi ann, this is certainly a major disaster, and I think they would be doing everything possible to contain and clean the mess. However, wait for all the finger-pointing when it comes to who is to blame! Mike.

I'm not extremely familiar with all of the circumstances surrounding this accident. However, I do think that British Petroleum needs to be fined for the damage that has been done because of this. There is going to be cleanup that is going to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and the government in the state that it is right now cannot afford to do it. In addition to that, as individuals we are often fined for mistakes that we make in our lives and thus I think that businesses should be liable for their mistakes as well.

hello dora, so many businesses and lives are at stake now. resorts would surely lose and probably close down. and the fishermen.. ohh! they are the most affected. and i have read that BP will use chemicals on the water. i dont think it is going to be safe to eat fish or shrimps coming from those waters.. i just dont know how they will be able to stop this disaster anymore. ann
