Jocotes for Health and Fun

Jocotes--those small round but oblong green tropical fruits with smooth shiny skin and yellow insides--are good for your health. Here in Manila, we call it "Sinigwelas." It's got lots of Vitamin C, A, fibers, and antioxidants. It's one of my favorite tropical summer fruits. Just wash it thoroughly and bite into its soft skin and flesh, sweet and succulent with refreshing fruity flavor. The taste is like a combination of peach, pineapple, papaya, and kiwi. I so love it that I featured it and its image on my website. You have to eat more of it for good health. It's fun to eat with friends as you watch a DVD or just plain chat.

That would be great, but I don't think we have those here. I actually think I got to try one once when I was in Chicago. But that doesn't sound like what my friends called it...

I think they have it in Asian stores there in the US. Other regions have different names for it. it's about 1 or 2 centimeters in diameter. You can hold 4 of them easily with one hand.

I used to like siniguelas (it's only now that I know it is aka jocotes) for we have one siniguelas tree in our backyard. Yes, it is sweet and a bit sour especially during the initial bite, and it is packed with vitamins and anti-oxidants, not to mention that it is fiberous. But that was when I was a kid. Today, I see a lot of it in the market and I don't bother to ask for it because I feel my system won't take it.

i understand. that's why i wonder why they don't try to make purees out of jocotes--so that those who can't chew them or digest the skin can at least drink the juice.
