Does anyone here on myLot know how to propagate a cut rose into a plant? I received two beautiful coral roses from my son for Mother’s Day and they actually are sprouting very light green leaves towards the bottom of the stem. It has been 10 days and the roses are still beautiful, not dried out at all. I have kept them in water this entire time, changing the water once daily. Can I just stick the stems in dirt to see if they start growing? Or is there some sort of rooting powder I can buy and put it in that first and then in the dirt? I would love to have a remembrance of these beautiful roses and keep them as a plant. Any help would greatly be appreciated. I have never grown roses before. Thanks and have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

schulzie if I remember you just take the blooms off , get some good potting soil and put it in some pots, water the soil, stick the cuttings in and keep the soil moist but not standing in water, they should start rooting in a few weeks. of course using hormone or rooting powder would help but roses are as easy to start as geraniums are.

Hi Hatley! Just make sure that the nodes or eyelets (sorry I don't know the exact term) are still intact. When you remove the leaves, there should be this protruding eye thingy where the new leaves would grow from. Some farmers destroy them so that the roses (especially if they're a rare variety) won't be grown by other farmers. Rose varieties are pretty easy to propagate. You can graft an eyelet into the stem another rose variety and the grafted variety will grow. If you find them intact, dip the stem in rooting powder, as mentioned above and it'll grow roots. :)

Once the flowers are gone, or if you cut the roses off and float them in a bowl so you just have stems, follow the directions others gave you. The only other thing I would add is that my mom would put a glass jar over them, like a terrarium. Sometimes it worked, other times not. Once the weather gets really hot, your chances of success go down.

So, how did it go? Did anything grow from it or not? Or did you try to grow them?

I know a bit on how to grow a cut rose. Before you try to plant it make sure that you are planting it on the same temperature or climate where you get that rose. Usually big rose would grow from a lower temperature place. If you don't have that kind of place, just don't put it on direct sunlight. Try planting it on a base, gather some good top soils, put some water on it, but not to much water. just make sure all the soils are wet but not muddy. Then clean the skin of the stem of the cut rose about one inch from the cut. Then deep it on the soil inside the base for about 5 inches. Water it every afternoon, and not in the morning. If you think it is dying because it is loosing its leaves, don't worry it is normal. Once a new leave grow, then your sure the rose is growing. Good Luck

Growing Roses - Getting roses to grow is pretty easy
Really roses are one of the easiest to propagate. Here is a site that may help you and if it doesn't I am sorry. But as you can tell it is very easy. http://www.instructables.com/id/HOW-TO-Propagate-Rose-Stem-Cuttings/ I use to work at a place called Park Seed and when we ordered rose plants to sell I got to talking to the growers and they are pretty easy to grow. Good luck and I hope it works for you.

Roses are lovely. I would wait till the flower is done and then cut all the tops off. If they are shooting from the bottom they will grow if you just put them in soil. You could use a hormone powder to help and start with a seedling mixture. You could even try all the pieces you cut off and maybe get lots of plants. If you just split the end of the stem before you plant and dip in your hormone powder and then put a match in the split to hold the split apart it will help striking. Best of luck
