How Long do you take to write an Article?

Singapore
May 26, 2010 11:13pm CST
Dear writers at myLot, I have recently read about how some people take about 5 minutes or even less to write an article. I don't think I can do that unless I had some help with some article churning software, which I don't. I normally take 20 minutes to half an hour for a short article (less than 500 words), and may extend to an hour or more if it is a long one (500 - 1000) words. Am I taking too long? How long does it take for you to write an article? How long is each article (no of words)?

I don't think it takes you too long. Everyone is different and writes in their own way. For some it may take five minutes. For others it takes a whole day. It varies for me. If I'm really in the zone then I can shoot one out within 20-30 minutes. If I'm stuck or it's just one of those days then it can take me a full day (sometimes two) to finish an article. My basic articles are 400-500 words long. I will be up front and tell you that I am not a good writer; I will never claim to be. I do enjoy it, though, and wish that I could be better with words.

Hi cmolinar, Spending 20-30 minutes for an article 400-500 words seems reasonable. I think I would take about the same time as you. I'm not a prolific writer as well, but I try my best to write well. I think with lots of practice, you can be a good writer.

I agree with Sydney. It typically takes me the same amount of time for short articles, and with Demand Studios that comes to about $30 an hour.

It would take me up to about 30-40 minutes to write an article of about 1000 words, but then quite a while to edit it and make sure that it reads OK, makes sense and that there are no typing or grammatical errors. I may do it a little quicker if its a subject that I am passionate about because I won't have to think about what to write.. _Derek

Thank you for responding to my post. It is also said that on the Internet, articles need to be shorter than with the written word, because on the Internet there is so much to read, that we like to have short, and easy-to-read articles in smaller paragraphs. Indeed, I have found that if I am looking a lot of text on the screen in long paragraphs, I tend to skim through it too. _Derek

Your articles are long at 1000 words! I used to write long articles but it just takes too long and I began to be less motivated to write more. So I have cut down my articles shorter. Sometimes, when I target 400-500 words, I tend to go over due to the elaborations. It does take some time to check for grammatical and spelling errors. When it is a subject familiar to me and passionate about, the words tend to flow and you write faster. It also depends on your mood too. If you are in the right mood for writing, you will also tend to write faster than usual.

Hi Derek, I know that we tend to skim when we see so much text on the screen, it is a strain on the eyes. When I have so much to write about a topic, I usually break it into two. This is how I go about doing it. When I brainstorm for points for an article, I usually take down about 8-10 points. If I can gather 10 points, I may break them into 5 points for each article. Then find two different angles to the topic. In this way, you brainstorm once, but you get two articles! I also help my readers by having sub-headings. So if they want to skim, they would still get the gist of my writing with one look.

It takes me forever to write an article. Sometimes half a day to a day. That's why I quit writing articles. I'm too slow at it.

hi sydneyHazelton you are so right,if some people can do that in five minutes they will not be able to sell it, it takes a bit of time to write a good article and you are right on the bu tton as far as I can see. I know I could not do so in less than half an hour and for a long one maybe an hour or more. No you are right it takes some time to think,to write and to edit it for any errors. any less then someone is not telling the truth or is copying someone else's work and that is illegal.

I have just about enough about plagiarism. Even if I can catch all the people who plagiarise my articles/blog posts, I just don't have the time to pursue each case. Initially I was very apprehensive when someone told me that my articles have been plagiarised, but now I take it as a "norm" when you write online. I hate it! Anyway, back to the issue, taking half an hour to write an article looks like the average here. I'm glad. I think I take about the same time as well to write a quality article.

Usually I take some ten minutes to write an article if I have already all the informations I need to, I write for many sites too and it has now been a work type for me, it is a good thing too and something which I like to do too.

Hi med889, Wow! You can write an article in ten minutes. That is very impressive. I don't think I can type that fast. While it is true that our brains can churn out words faster than we can type them, but it is difficult to catch up. I usually take 20 minutes or more even when I have all the information I need. Do you mind sharing which websites you write for? I write for Triond mostly, but venturing into other profitable sites as well. Tell me if you are earning good money from your writing sites.

Touch typist, evidently! I got RSI in my neck and hands from typing, which has cut my rate right down. I write quite quickly, but I'm definitely a "2 fingers/eyes down" kinda girl. Too old to learn new tricks. I think "speakware" might be best for me!

what a coincidence sydney..i just wrote my latest article just now and finished it before i realised your new post!i didn't take a long time cuz it was a simply-light articles that could be easily read by anyone..but if i got overflowing ideas,it might took me about half an hour to pick the right words...

Hi Amelly, It's great to hear that you have been writing quite regularly. Keep up the great work! For me, if I have ideas flowing, it would take faster to complete the article. If I need more time to think, I will take longer to complete. Picking the right words would come in later for me when I'm editing.

It depends on what you write. Different topics require different time. If it is aticle about self experience, it is very easy to churn one. With experience it becomes easier and faster. Based on what you mentioned, it does not take a lot of for you to write. I take about an hour to write a 500 word article.
• Singapore
30 May 10
Hi nishdan, How are you doing? You are right about this one. I tend to be able to write a quick article if it is just about daily happenings or narrate what happened during the day. If the article is about a topic which needs researching a little, then I would have to spend more time. It may take an hour or more, including research time. An hour for a 500-word article is reasonable, to me. Some people may think that it takes too long. Some people feel that we should churn 4 articles in an hour. Whee! I can't do that, maybe if I have done a little bit of brainstorming and also researching and if I'm into the writing zone.

Yes, the time required for one article to complete is nearly half an hour. It also depends on the topic that has to be written.

I think we would have given sufficient thought in an article which takes half an hour to complete. The topic is important, you are right. If the topic is very informative and require ample research, half an hour would not be sufficient for me. Do you write for any writing sites?

I don't think you take too long at all. I spend about an hour for a 300 word article, and about 3 hours for a 1000 word article. For me, 5 minutes or less would be for restaurant or movie reviews on some sites, and even then, I notice sometimes I'll take 20 minutes to an hour.

Currently, almost all of my article writing is posted on Associated Content. But I'll also write restaurant reviews on Yelp and dvd reviews on Amazon. i have one novella out, which is available at Amazon and other bookstores.

That's pretty okay. I think taking an hour for a 300-word article would include editing and proofreading, I presume. I usually take about 15-20 minutes if I were to write a review. Movie reviews take longer for me because I like to do a little research on the characters and plot. Where do you publish your writing?

Unfortunately, there is no more page view earnings from AC anymore, thus I'm done with that site. I have never heard of Yelp, do they accept international writers? I used to write for ReviewStream but have been rather discouraged by them, since I'm not getting $2.50 reviews any longer. I'm just getting bulk rate of 50 cents. Are you paid at Yelp? I'm impressed that you have one novella already. I really want to write a book, but not motivated for such a long period. That's why I just concentrate on articles. It's faster and easier to complete.

The articles that I write can sometimes take as little as a half an hour. But usually no less than that. Other times, if I need to do a lot of research, they may take up to 4 or 5 hours, but not very often is it more than that. In addition to writing the articles, I have to research and find pictures to go along with them. That usually takes a minimum of 15 minutes, including downloading the pictures. After all of that, I would then type the article on the web site or blog that I am using and then upload the photos. There again will be at least another 20 minutes, so I would say in total the bare minimum for me to write an article is about an hour, sometimes more. The articles that I write are usually about 5 or 6 paragraphs long. Each paragraph is probably about 30 to 50 words, so that would be a minimum of 150 words per article and I guess about a maximum of 300 words per article. I guess it just depends on the topic. Interesting discussion that you have started here Sydney, thanks and have a good day!

I have read a number of articles on article writing and SEO that say that in order for your article's presence to be "felt" by major search engines, the length of your article has to be at least 400 words. I don't really know if this is a rule of thumb among those who write articles for SEO purposes. Have you read anything like this?
• Singapore
30 May 10
hi blindmoongoddess, I am no SEO expert, thus not able to answer your question about the length of the article. But I did hear that the main keywords should appear at least once or twice in the first paragraph. But really, I have no idea. I really must read more about this. Will get back to you if I find something.

Hello kykidd, For a complete article with pictures and all, I will also probably take about that time. Editing and grammar/spell check also takes some time, what more adding pictures. By the way, where do you get your pictures? I'm afraid to get pictures from the net, might be violating some copyright laws. Your article is not very long I feel. I usually write about 300 words for a simple review. You are right when you say that it depends on the topic. Some topics lend itself to more things to be discussed, while others are dry and uninteresting.

Hi Sydney, I think those articles in Ezinearticles probably just take 5 to 10 minutes of work. Most of them are short, just 250 words to 300 words. Secondly, the writers write for the purpose of getting backlinks to their blogs, so quality does not really matter. Ezineearticles is quite lax in accepting substandard articles. Most writers can generate 20 articles within 2 hours. While the writing part takes very little time, the product research time and the keyword research takes longer. Most writers will have a set of keywords and a few main points before they start pouring out the words. If you read a few articles there, i think you can learn to write substandard articles and use only 5 minutes per article.
• Singapore
30 May 10
I notice that too. Their articles are short, just trying to get backlinks to their sites. Writing 20 articles in 2 hours would definitely only produce substandard articles, not quality ones. I agree that the writing may not take as much time. It's the research time and brainstorming time that takes more time. And if you do keywords research, that can take hours! If I can learn how to write quality articles in 5 minutes, that would be great. But as it is, I definitely can't.

I don't think I've ever written an article which is more than one thousand words long, Sydney. I think the longest I have ever written is a love letter I wrote to my husband before we were married! He he. But seriously, if you take twenty minutes to write a 500 words article, that is quite fast. I take about an hour to finish a 400 word article and this doesn't include the research that I have to do. So if including the research, I think a 400 word article would take me about two hours; maybe less. I think it's not how fast you can write but how good the article is. It's no use writing ten articles in an hour but none of them is good at all. It's better to write one article a day and have a really good quality article. That way your readers won't be disappointed with you and you'll be known as a good writer among those who know you. And perhaps with that reputation you can demand a better pay for each article that you produce. But I can understand the need to churn out many articles for those whose earnings mainly come from writing articles. The more articles you produce the more money you get. That is why I always look for sites which offer a high passive income. That way my articles would always be earning money even if I don't write every day.
• Singapore
30 May 10
Gosh! If I am not embarrassed to publish all my love letters to my husband before we got married, I think I'll be rich. We write to each other almost every day for nine years! Well, not really for nine years, but I have a couple of shoe boxes full of letters and postcards. Phew! Writing itself may take 20 minutes. Yes, research usually takes longer and when you surf the net for information, you can take hours without realizing time has passed. I know that having a good reputation is important. And this goes with writing quality articles. There is one writer on Triond. She often writes on health issues and they were good, because she had a medical background. She has thousands of articles. I have not read her articles for some time and decided to take a look at one. I was quite disappointed about its quality. It was short and not as informative as I thought it would be. But I guess, it depends on the topic as well. Maybe the topic did not lend itself to much information. Sometimes when you have carved yourself as a prolific writer, your audience maybe disappointed if you write something of less quality. Yes, I have this need to churn as many articles as possible. But have not put in the effort to write them. Shish! I still believe that I can generate passive income from my writing. It may take time, but I know I will eventually get there. I think you will get there first, UmiNOor!

I guess I'm not as romantic as I would think I am. Just keep writing SydneyHazelton. I like your article about stealing time to write. You're very right. Mums like us need to steal time here and there to write. I think that is the reason I don't take writing projects from specific clients. I doubt I will be able to meet deadlines. I hate deadlines and I hate to have to force myself to write to specific targets. I prefer to write when I feel like writing so Sydney, I will never be a rich writer either.

I haven't timed myself when writing articles but anyone who writes an article in 5 minutes or less is not taking the job seriously. They are just churning out articles to post on these low paying article sites like Triond or whatever. They figure the more articles they post on there the better, and quantity is the name of the game not quality. If you look at some of these article sites you will see very poorly written articles. Please don't compare yourself to these people.

I do write for Triond . Although quantity matters here, I do maintain a certain level of quality when I write. For beginning writers, Triond serves a wonderful place to start. When it comes to writing, I never time myself either. I take whatever time I need for that particular article. One may need less time while others longer. It all depends.
• Canada
12 Jul 10
I didn't mean to say writing for Triond is bad and that all the articles there are low quality. I sometimes think of writing for these kinds of places myself. But it really does seem that there are some writers in these kinds of places that are just out to put up as many articles as they can, and they don't care about the quality. So there's no sense in comparing your speed with theirs, if when you write you care about the quality-which you should :)

some people here don't write with their native language, just like me, so we need more time. I usually spent 30 minutes to an hour(less than 500 words). i had to write in English since 1998 so it's difficult enough for me and i am sure that i have make a lot of mistakes.

English is not my native language either, but in my country English is taught as a first language. I think that being non-native speakers, we do need to practice the language a lot. Writing is a great way to practise it. Just run grammar and spelling checks, but they are not foolproof though. So we still have to fall back on our understanding of the rules of the language.

I recently read Jason Fladlien's "How to Write an Article in Seven Minutes" and watched the videos. This is a good course for those who would like to write faster. I still can't write an article in seven minutes but the course has helped me cut down the time it takes for me to write an article. I can write a 400-word article in 15 to 20 minutes (that includes the time I spend for research). I'm still aiming to improve my speed. To write even faster, you can either improve your typing speed or you can use a voice recognition software like Dragon Naturally Speaking which is recommended by Jason Fladlien and Tiffany Dow who are both top ghostwriters and Internet marketers. I am not a big fan of voice recognition software though. To save time in research, I use a free web-based tool called Ultimate Research Assistant.

For me, it depends very much on the topic. If it is a topic I am very familiar with I can do it in 15 mins maybe, but if not, it takes a lot longer. Also, it depends on how many ideas I have for it, sometimes I have almost the whole article in my head, while I have to think a lot while writing others, so it all depends. I have no average time or anything. Also, the length of the articles I write are very different as well, so that's a large part of it all as well I guess.

yes, it all depends on the topic. If we are familiar with the topics, we tend to write it faster. Those that require a bit more research will take slightly longer. You pointed out an important aspect of writing - the length of the articles! Some of my articles are longer than others and thus would require more time to complete. Good point!

Hi Haze I take pride in my articles and usually those under the 500 limit takes me about 30-40minutes. 500+ can take me up to an hour if not more. I take the time to do some research on my topic before writing any article, even if I know the topic really well. Those who claim they can write an article under 5minutes...it's crap.
