Silly Text Abbreviations??

My mom always scolds me for texting her the way our generation do, you know with all the abbreviations. Example : MEHHH for sighing 'an expression" MUSM miss you so much N1 nice one Plus with all that smileys and whatnot. Even if older people think it's silly, or because they dont understand them, doing abbreviations facilite life into a whole new level. It's not like we're writing an essay for english classes. They think that by doing so, we fail to practice our grammar or spell correctly. What do you guys think?? Do you guys do the same thing?

I was taught to use proper English, punctuation and grammar and I pretty much always type using that. Occasionally I'll throw in the odd 'LOL' or smileyface but I am stubborn in my ways and I think my messages seem to sloppy if I dont use the full words or punctuations. I dont get annoyed by other people's shortened scripts though. I just get a little frustrated when kids and young adults cant spell the most simple words and dont have a clue about similar words such as 'their', 'they're', and 'there' for example.

I just realised I accidentally typed 'to' there instead of 'too'. How hypocritical of me, sorry!

I only text that way to my friends but with family I text the "normal" way. They don't like the slang words we use now a days, their old fashion!

Even here in my country there are many abbreviated text mostly in our language. We do that so that we can save from the number of characters we can send thru a text. in texting word that is okay since we learn to adopt to the changes, but in the real world and if we use the word, when we are used to texting that kind of spelling of words in cellphone messages, sometimes we learned to adopt that in writings. For students that is wrong, so they have to be careful. Actually, here now in my country the Department of Education are against the Jejemons. Jejemons are the people who text messages in cellphone in different spelling and different position and in different way. Like the word hello, they text it Jelo. Which I am against. Actually by reading their text I can't read it and it gives me a headache analyzing what they really meant. Some text abbreviations are cute and funny, but not all of it.

Hope you won't get mad, but I don't like reading those kind of text messages sometimes...specially when its too complicated! Text messaging is for communication, its suppose to make our life better...lol...so if were gonna have a hard time reading the messages we receive then it just contradicts its purpose. And oh yeah, if your thinking that I'm old...I'm not. I'm part of that generation as well.

I like it because it saves time as well as space because of shorter sentences which allows more to be said in a single text :P

hi there lilmuchang. =) guilty as charged. hehe i do a lot of this when sending SMS. for me it's for convenience. however there are times when the person am speaking with doesn't understand the shorthand in SMS. i would feel guilty afterwards. but i do not use it out of hand. i just use such very sparingly. i only am bounded to LOL, TY, UW. but other than that, i am not aware of other abbreviations. i only learned from this post that N1 is "nice one". hehe. MyLot is really informative. =)

Got this message once: Im havng a gr8 tym. c u l8r, gtg nw. (I'm having a great time. See you later, got to go now.) Aside from the annoying message, the way it was written was even more annoying. And I was barely new to texting then. Although my age is not that far from the younger generation (or maybe I just refuse to admit), I had a hard time understanding the message, and I needed to get an "interpreter", someone more savvy in this language. I think it will eventually take its toll on our children if they continue to use this shortened, abbreviated language. As for me, I don't allow my kids to use text lingo when texting me, they have to write their messages as if they're actually writing on a piece of paper as I don't want them to get used to misspelled words and abbreviations that are not found in the dictionary.

I think the older people are right. By making it a habit, we may get confused one day of using abbreviations to our formal sentences. I don't use these abbreviations too often. Only when i'm too lazy to type, that's when i use some of it.

Sweetie, i cannot understand those messages. My nephew has the tendency to text me that way and it takes me almost an hour to understand it. I end up calling him to ask what the hell he wanted to say. TATA.

Hmmm.. I do understand the fact that text abbreviations are required for some occasion. But most of the time I won't really want o practice it unless I'm too lazy to type in full. I don't know about the others but I agree with the older people as I'm not having english as my first language hence if I practice too much broken english I might just end up using broken english for the rest of my life.

i don't really care if got to read that kind of text messages from my friend but i'm not used to it, texting with all the abbreviations, and i can text really fast even if i'm not using abbreviations. and yeah, it makes people dumb, for sometimes i forgot the right spelling of that word because of the way my friends spell it in text messages. i'm in the same generation as yours too :)

you know what text abbreviations is okay if you are in a young age because many younger persons love to do that its anew generation thou, but in most likely like your mom she doesn't want it because she can't understand maybe she just wanted you to just text it appropriately.

Have you heard about the Jejemons? if you haven't try searching them on youtube. Well, They worst than abbreviations, they even spell thing with wrong spellings and add some letters not necessary that can really be so confusing to readers of text messages. I do try some of abbreviations in text messages. Good thing my parents doesn't scold me. They don't even know that LOL means Laugh out loud. They thought it's like an a word for stupid. hahah... Well, if you tried texting to me you may realize that I'm a mild jejemon because of the shortcuts I'm using it for my convenience. lol
