I love cooking and I grow lots of herbs in my garden because I think that there is nothing better than freshly cut herbs in your food
Basil is one of my favourite herbs because I do a lot of Italian cooking, but for some reason I just don't seem to be able to groe it, everyting I get new plants they just die off
Has anybody got any tips for me please.

Thanks for the head's up! I was planning on planting basil and oregano at the very least. But I am also planning on growing it inside. I live in an apartment and do not have any garden space so it'll have to be inside for me. Do you think it will do better inside?

Hiya chem,
Have just been reading about Basil and it says there before sowing the seeds to make sure that the Soil itself has plenty of natural compost and is well watered before sowing the actual seeds themselves. Reckons there to sow the seeds thinly which I suppose they mean well spaced out and cover them with a centimetre of compost very gently on top of the seeds themselves.
If you grow them in Pots to space them out very well and when they sprout which takes about a week to re transplant them if you need to
and to take out the weakest sprouts and leave only leave the strongest to grow.

Hiya chem,
Well that´s okay. Good luck with growing it. I can´t use it in this House as they all hate the smell of it (grin). That´s why I buy it already grounded with other herbs if I want to make anything. Only way I can get around it.

I tried starting basil from seed many times and never could get it to grow. My daughter planted it one time and grew a plant that lived for three years! The seed packet said it would live two years with no frost, but she had it inside and used it often. I got her to start one for me this year, then my sister gave me one, so hopefully I can keep them growing.

It's related to mint, but much more tender. I grow it next to my tomatoes and have no problems. Ask at your garden center, they will know your area and maybe can help.

I grow basil and I've had mixed results. I have a cinnamon basil in a relatively small pot. It's growing so well out in the sun and I just water it once in a while. It's on well drained soil, so I don't really worry about root rot. So far, I've gotten about 20 cuttings from it and it looks as big as ever. Great plant!
I have a sweet basil too and I've had less success. I think half of them die, but the only difference I can see is the soil. My sweet basil soil tends to compact so it holds too much water in. I think that's why my sweet basil plants die.

Hello in almost homes of hindus here in india you can see basil plants in the court yard, basil (TULSI)is considered as holy plant, they are worshiiped by us as a goddess , we light lamps and insense sticks near it every morning and evening;
the leaves have wonderful medicinal property..
Incidentally today we are observing a festival that symbolises marriage of goddess Tulsi with god Vishnu..
Thank you so much for this discussion.
Professor. . Cheers have a great day ahead.
God bless you. Welcome always.

I dont bother trying to grow it because the supermarket near us always ends up reducing it to a few pennies, and I end up buying a little plant and cutting off the leaves. For some reason though the plants always die after a few days though, so I'm sorry I am useless with them and I know I can always buy some more for a few pennies.
