Do You Accept Friend Requests Even From Someone You Don't Really Know?

Philippines
May 31, 2010 3:12am CST
I have been invited by a lot of strangers in Facebook and I don't really have an idea why they were adding me to become their friend when I personally don't know them. SOmetimes I check how many mutual friend we have and if there's quite many, I accept it because they're probably some old friends I already forgot. What about you? Do you accept invites from someone you really don't know? Thanks to those who will share.

my goal have the account of facebook is add friends from anywhere, so why me should limit the friends just to who friends already know? it's seems will not be fun and not in accordance purpose of facebook itself as a site social networking

Hi! you seem to be a very friendly person. Sometimes I accept strangers too but I make sure I don't give much information on them.

My uncle once told me that a stranger is the friend you don't know. So for me I accept all requests for friendship.

Well danoluma, your uncle has a point. Sometimes we had friends that we have already forgot, maybe we thought they were strangers when in fact they're friends whom we only did not recognize :)

Here in Mylot, yes. I do accept a friend request but I analyze first the profile of that person. Before I do accept without reviewing the request, but now I am being careful because there are many trolls everywhere and some are just using that request to gain invites or to have referrals. In social sites, I do not accept a friend request from people I don’t know. Like in Facebook. Actually I am not active on that social site. I am more active here. I do not accept because I do write some personal thoughts in my social sites I just want my dear friends to read it.

Yes, there are a lot of things I post and Write about here as well that I would never post on Facebook in fear of who might read it.

not always, i check first if they are within mutual friends and send them short message before i accept their invites (if i'm not sure when i met them), it better to be careful than to have annoying spammers..

nice avatar you got there Bart78! spammers are really annoying, and those sellers, they just want to add you up to make good impressions for their businesses. Stephanie, yeah you're right, but what if you're acquainted to that person but you're not really friends, would you still accept their friend requests?

I agree. I have to at least have communicated with the person at least once before I accept his or her friend request.

in facebook i never invite people i don't know or have not spoken to! most of the time i've so many mutual friends with the person who has sent me the invite but i simply don't know the guy so i don't accept! :) they can access your photos and stuff so its better not to accept them!

I actually set up 2 profiles one is for friends and family, the other is for the people I meet through online opportunities. The second one is like spam central, everyone is looking for referrals. Some of my online friends are on both profiles and they respect my personal one and they don't spam there. Maybe someone should just make a social site and call it spambook or spamspace.

exactly, I have personal information on my facebook like where I live (only the town not the address but still), my email address, and photos of my young nieces and nephews! Anybody could add me and go perving through those photos or accessing my personal information which I only want my frineds or family to know about.

Yup, they can access your photos, so I only upload the ones that are not that private like company gatherings and photos with my friends. Those personal photos I don't upload them on the net. I just keep them in my hard drive

Well the truth is I only add friends that I have made in the real world or at least faces that I have seen. I'm not really that interested to make my facebook as a new friend finder site rather just a social site for me and the friends I know. Sometimes I also got added by people I don't know then I'll just check out our mutual friends just like you do but lately there seems to be empty accounts starting to add people randomly. I wonder it had anything to do scams or ptsu.

Hi ohiocy! What is a ptsu? Sorry for my ignorance. I have more than one account in facebook because I used to join a lot of contests there, and I used those accounts to help me win those prizes. But now, I deleted those accounts. I'm actually surprised that those accounts have many friends even though I put lousy avatars in it.

No I dont accept friend request from anyone, I like to know who I am accepting. Though I dont keep in contact with all of the people that are my friends but I have known them and is nice to see what they are upto nowadays. I do check to see if we ahev mutual friends and depending on who the mutual friends are depends if I accept or not. There was one person that I have added from a game we play but that is so we can send each other gifts and help each other out. I dont want just anyone knowing what I am upto.

OK-I have one facebook friend. I met this person in RL. My bf had sent me a friend invite a long time ago, but I didn't know it until yesterday because I hardly go to facebook, and I'm mad at the one friend I have because she won't even call my cell phone, and she's in the same profession as me. Basically, she is the reason I signed up for facebook. Now, she wants me to visit her freakin' farm? I thought I was the only one to get invites from complete strangers. I get friend requests from the latin americas, and some old guy. Wtf! It's weird. For security, I didn't put my real first name. That is why it is even more surprising.

Yeah, it's really disgusting and annoying if you don't play those games and those strangers ask you to play the same game.

Hi Kourdapya, I am very careful in accepting friends in facebook. I make sure that i know them. If they are referred by friends i check their profile first if it's posted but if not i don't accept the invitation. i am scared.

Yes, I do. I think it's cool to add someone you don't know to expand my circle of friends. I have added someone I don't know and we have a great communication. You can learn from them and you might even meet them personally.

well... i only accept facebook friend requests from strangers if it's for the purpose of having more sorority sisters in the game sorority life game. but i list them in one category. cheers and happy myLotting!

Hi evepin! I used to play sorority life too, but when I reached level 50, I got tired of it. Yes I accepted a lot of friends also because of sorority. =)

I do the same. I have over 200 sorority sisters and don't personally know any of them. But like you they are in their own folder. Now my myspace is a different story. I have over 800 friends and don't know 25% of them. My brother and I made accounts at the same time and were in competition to see who could get more friends. I won of course.

Yeah, most of my sorority sisters are Americans. I guess the game is not that popular to my fellow Filipinos so I have plenty of American friends at Facebook which is cool. =)

I used to for certain games, but not any more. I have got rid of all the applications and all the 'friends' who are not known to me.

i have the same thinking as you do. i do not just accept friend requests from just somebody i do not personally know. i have to check if we have some mutual friends first.

I don’t usually accept friendship requests from people I don’t know because I don’t see the point. A lady requested my friendship because we happen to share the same name which I thought was strange...I ignored the request. I’ve had some with a message in another language and some along with spam which I’ve also ignored.

Oh, that's interesting. I have never met anyone before who happen to have the same name as mine. If that happened to me, maybe I'd befriend that person, if she happens to be a good person, at least something we share is quite interesting - our names!

I will not add totally stranger to my friend list in FB. I only add people who I ever meet and talk with. I don't really want to have many friend but I don't know them very well or just know them online. I have many friend request but I need to check it it before it add.

Maybe the reason why you have many friend request is that you were or are popular in school, and everybody wants to be your friend, am I right?
@pabreen (237)

Yes,because some of them are referred by my friends so they are added as my friends too. So even if I don't know them personally and they want to add me as their friend I would accept them.

Just be careful what you post, it can be used againts you!

I don't accept especially if they are totally stranger no matter how many mutual friends we have. Some people in facebook make friends for some reason: 1. for networking 2. to accumulate friends ( maybe they have quoa) 3. just for the heck of it. I could have more than 1,000 friends now if I'll add them up. Friends in my facebook are chosen few. They became part of my life. So we have something to discuss in common through our status and link.

5 Feb 13
I just have to agree with you with your second reason. They feel good if they have many facebook friends even if they don't know those people in real life. They feel popular with that!.

yeah, i accept all friend request... i do sort out my friends in FB, like if we are from the same company, the same school, the same place or if we are good friends.. i group them together.. i usually check mutual friends before accepting them though.. coz they could be from the same place where i am from or an old friend i dont remember.. lol
