Defying the odds

I was at the vets last week and noticed that the tech had cat bites on her finger. Well, having had to go to the hospital because I was bitten by one of my cats, http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1432852.aspx http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1437309.aspx I certainly could feel for her, so I asked who bit her. She told me Cha Cha. She told me that Cha Cha was attacked by a dog visiting the clinic and bit her and the vet while they were trying to rescue her from that dog and another dog. The vet also got bit by one of the dogs too. Happily, in spite of having to be extracted from the dog's mouth, Cha Cha wasn't badly injured. Not even as badly injured as the people who rescued her (and who she bit in "gratitude....) Now, Cha Cha is a very special cat at the vets. Granted they have a number of "clinic cats." One is one of the vet's mom's cat (her mom can't take care of him anymore) and one is a pair of semi-ferals they couldn't find homes for when they were cute kittens, so now they have run of the clinic. But Cha Cha is different. Named Cha Cha, after Shirley Muldowney http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley_Muldowney because of an accident that: "A crash in 1984 crushed her hands, pelvis, and legs, necessitating half a dozen operations and 18 months of therapy." Here is Cha Cha's story. A young man returning for volunteering in Del Rio after the flooding there when the remains of a hurricane stalled over that town caused extensive flooding. He was coming back with an injured dog he had rescued amid the flooding and while driving along the highway, he spotted the body of a small animal ahead. Just as he got near the body, it moved. Well, he slammed on the brakes and pulled over. Kind person he was, he picked up the poor, broken body of the cat and put her in the car too, figuring that at the very least, he could get her to the vets and they could put her out of her misery. Well, he got to the clinic and brought the dog and cat inside. Apparently, the dog wasn't badly injured and so they put him in a cage while they started working on the cat. She had a broken tail, her pelvis was broken along with a back leg, her shoulder blade was broken, some ribs were cracked and, as Ann always said, her bell was well and truly rung. Her tail had to be amputated and because of the damage to the lower spine when it was broken, she's a little incontinent. Despite all that, Cha Cha, after she came to her senses, is one of the most forgiving, loving cats I've ever met. She is one of the office greeters. Sometimes she's just rolling around when you pet her. If you pet her, you can feel the old injuries, if you look at her shoulders, you can see they are uneven, but that really doesn't slow her down. She's a wonderful cat. I just wanted to share with my mylot friends about this lovely being. You know any amazing animals like Cha Cha?

Cha Cha sounds like a beautiful and very lucky cat! She must have been in so much pain when she was found and I am so glad she pulled through and now has a pampered life when she’s not biting the hand that feeds her that is! I love hearing of stories like this. I remember reading about a ginger cat that was rescued from the Victorian Black Saturday bushfires in Australia on the 7th February 2009. He was badly burned but pulled through, I don’t remember his name, he was such a sweet thing...Thanks so much for sharing the story...

Stories such as this make me cry. Partly because I can't bear seeing any animal in pain, & partly because that kind of rescuer is so beautiful! I think I'm going to go play some mindless game right now, or I'll be useless from crying so hard. Thank God for such a kind person, & for our clinic's kind work, too! Maggiepie

Hey Elic! Thanks for sharing the story about "Cha Cha"! And yes, it did sort of remind me of two cats that my Vet had as "office greeters" I can't think of their names right now because I do draw blanks, but there were two of them that were also hurt, fixed up and stayed at the clinic to "greet" everyone and I loved them both! I wish I could think of their names, but it was a few years back when my last two babies were very sick and had to put both of them down, so not a good time for me! I am happy that Cha Cha lived through her injuries and is now alive and well and able to "entertain"! That was a beautiful story, of course, that made me cry! Hugs, Opal

You know Elic, it just breaks my heart everytime I hear these stories and I give you so so so much credit for what you do! You have a heart of Gold or Platinum! I couldn't do what you do because I am too much of a wuss and would be keeping cats and become one of those "old cat lady hoarders" I'm afraid! And I love dogs too so God only knows what I would become! I want to save every abused animal on the planet, but you do what you can, I only "wish"! I am ashamed of myself, compared to you! I have such a major "soft spot" in my heart for animals, not for humans and if that is sick I'm not sorry. Right now I am sitting here typing this to you, my Loverboy Star is lying in my lap with his arm around me and I am crying! Love, Leslie

Cha Cha sounds amazing! I have never had an animal like that. It is amazing that she has been through so much and still has a sweet personality. The guy that took her to the vets was a rare find also. A lot of people (especially men) don't go out of their way or do anything that is going to cost them money for an animal that is not even theirs.

Hi ElicBxn, Firstly what a kind man to bring both the animals in and Cha Cha against the odds survived. Two of my cats have had to have their tails amputated and legs pinned where broken in an accident but Bob cat (aptly named really) had a an accident and the vets where he was taken too phoned me so I rushed over and was told that it would be at least £600 (going back about 20 years now) so it would be better to puit him down. I kicked off and said that if I had something broken and needed something aputated it would be fixed so how sare they put a price on my cats life! I rang my own vet explained situation and that couldn't afford all at once but would pay in installments and he said no problem bring him over so Bob cat ended up with a bob tail and a limp after his leg ws pinned but that just added to his character bless. I was so angry with the first vet I adviced lots of people never to go there as they were monetry rather than caring for the animals. My other cat Wilfred who I have now also had to have his tail amputed and leg pinned after an accident and his is as handsome as ever, Sybil took over as boss cat whilst he was recovering which was funny but upon his return he took back over as man of the house lol. Now we live in a lovely rural area with not much traffic thankfully so hopefully I won't have this problem again with any of my cats. Huggles. Ellie :D

see, that's why I keep mine inside, a lot cheaper than having to have them operated on or buried...

This is a really beautiful posting about cats, I can remember my cat Zeebaw which got lost recently though, it is still so painful and I hope I will overcome this trauma.

You will, but probably the best way to heal is to find another cat, doesn't replace the lost one, but helps heal the hole left... and keep this one inside so it doesn't get lost too

Odd does not have any definition according to me. So trying to define it is a foolish work.

"Odds" in this case is a gambling term, meaning that her survival was not good. If you have ever heard that a horse has a "17 to 1 chance of winning," well we call those "odds" in English
