How Do You Get Over Someone Completely?

I fell in love with a boy a long, long time ago. I should have forgotten about him by now. I seldom see him and we don't talk when we see each other. But I still get choked up whenever I hear songs that remind me of him. My heart still races whenever I hear people talking about him and more so in the few instances that I've seen him lately.
A friend of mine once said, "You never really get over someone you have truly loved." Do you agree with this?

yep yep yep. the bestest best way to completely, honestly, totally get over someone is to fall in love genuinely head over heels with somebody else. this is something that should not be forced though, because it should happen naturally. fall in love again. be patient. and be determined to move on.

Thanks for your advice, but I've got to tell you, I've fallen in and out of love with other guys. In fact, I fell head-over-heels in love with somebody else -- madly and deeply. But I got over that person in a couple of years. But this boy -- it's been almost two decades. I never forgot about him even when I was with other guys. But this madness has to stop.

hmmm i have theories. first possibility is, you were never really in love with those other guys you mentioned. second possibility is, you're no longer in love with the first guy you mentioned, you're just obsessed. and if it's beyond the normal limit, it is considered a psychological disorder....i've read that in books. but of course, it's better if you just go and see a psychologist or psychiatrist. it doesn't mean you're necessarily sick if you go and see one. all the best!

No I don't. It just takes you back to the memories like any other memories. It doesn't mean you've never got over your ex.

hi there,
haha i can feel for you! coz i also have been inlove with someone way back my highschool years but we never become us although at one point we become closer to each other. its been years since the last time i saw him but still whenever i hear his name it still makes me smile! haha i know its no longer love that i feel coz i'm already married now but i think its the memories that i have with him before that makes me smile and the crazy things that i have done before.
somethings are just difficult to forget specially if its something that brings us lots of happy memories.
i think what your friend said is somehow true but for me its not really not getting over them, but its just the memory of the person that we have loved truly that makes us feel that way unless you are still hoping to be with him again?
on my part sometimes i ask some what ifs in my mind but at the end of the day still i am thankful that i am now with my husband and that he's the right person that God sent me. and the guy im talking about is just part of the past that somehow makes me happy and adds some color in my life before...

I never able to get over someone who have close relationship with me completely. There's always a fragment of memory about them, but i don't let it bother me. It's a reminder of our past experience.

It's really hard to get over someone you loved before. I too have experienced that even when I found someone else and he also had a new girlfriend , i would still cry or felt some heartaches. But what helped me to get over him is to think about the wrong things he had done when he was still my boyfriend. And it helped. However like u, my heart still beats too fast whenever I see him. ..

I think it is hard for a woman to get over a man who has been loved thoughly,maybe for man,this is much easier,I think the only way for a woman to get over someone is to love someone else more fircely than before,but why do you want to get over someone completely,I think that is just a part of good memory a woman can have,when you get old,you can recall all of this and you will think that your life is worth of it because you have loved someone completely

If that boy in your past is already taken and that there is no chance for you to get him then you need to move on with your life without the thought of him...Some people who cannot easily get over someone because there are things unresolved, that is why you are still hoping to resolve things perhaps. But if things happened the way that both of you agreed to put final closure in your relationship then you may have moved on gracefully by now & let go of the memories of that person in the past.Learn to accept things that you are not meant for each other & that let that hope of yours subside for it will not do you any good. Remember him just as the part of your past and only part of your history.

Yeah I agree, it does take a long time to get over that past love, certain things remind me of my ex, but because I am in a new relationship, and I am very much in love with my boyfriend, I don't think about my ex, and if I see him now, it doesn't really mean anything, not like before.

just be positive and know that Everything Happens for a Reason..there's someone probably better out there for you !! goodluck finding him :)

I've had the same thing happen to me recently, and it really is the most awful thing. I usually just try to do something else whenever I start thinking about him, like listen to some upbeat music or watch something funny on TV. People tell me it'll get easier with time and I'm just waiting. Good luck ! xx
