Justice delayed is justice ‘denied’

Many of my senior friends might be aware of the sad ‘GAS LEAKAGE’ incident in Bhopal, India, in the factory owned by Union Carbide. This was 25 years ago. So many lives were lost and many were affected. Government appointed a commission of inquiry, the final judgment has come now after 25 years. But this is never the right judgments. None of the 500,000 affected are satisfied. The top 8 are awarded a jail term of just 2 years, and all are fined 100,000 INR. But immediately after this all convicts have been released on personal bond of just 25,000 INR. I feel they will escape again, but can they escape the judgments in the court of the Almighty? There may be delay, but they can’t escape. What is your view, please share. Professor

This is shame on our justice system, Life has become invaluable for these rich peoples. Still the big one is missing and I am sure he will not be captured and his last news will come from grave. Hope that this incident will force some law change and that will give justice to the victims.

hello prof, I do agree with you, justice delayed is justice denied. But,eventhu those criminals/culprits may escaped the justice here on earth. There is another justice that they surely won't escape and is more justified one...from the Almighty. I pity those victims of injustice, but i also pitied more the ones who did the injustice on earth. There are lots of cases here in my country too same like what you have wrote my dear. So sad, becoz, those people whom we trust and hope for justice to served are the ones who deny justice for the victims. Money talks as they say...let them pay on the judgement day then.

The leak in the structure of our law is greater than the Bhopal gas leak and so they easily come out of this case. The political pressure will also do much to close this case without heavy penalties as they should have hands in this case. They should have inspected and given rights for that company and they should also be blamed if one goes deeper into the case. As you told, they can't and should not escape from the almighty.

This happened a when the congress party was in power. They simply let anyone get away because they get money. Arjun Singh the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh at that time, simply left Bhopal and came back when everything was finished. He is one of the main culprits along with Union Carbide Management. His approach to the problem was ONLY to save the criminals alone and not to get justice to the affected citizens. Every government at Center, especially the congress govts. tried to suppress the facts and mislead the people. else the judge would not have given such a ridiculous judgement. the judiciary was bought out by the 'power centers' (congress party and MNCs). The 2 years jail term, Rs.1 Lac as fine and eligibility for bail has become joke of the year. Now the politicians from all political parties are again blaming each other when they could have prevented this kind of judgement. there were many in the investigating agencies who said that undue pressure was on them to 'let go' main culprits, especially the congress led governments. Lets forget what god will do to them. that is irrelevant. these criminals should be punished here when they are alive. when that does not happen, how can the survivors live happily. these survivors have lost everything what they cherished because of the negligence of few men whose main motive was profit at any cost.

From what you tell, the verdict is a mockery of a judgment. I imagine that the responsible people had money and influences. I have seen that in my country too. It´s a shame.

This is very, very wrong. The fact that those people that have had to suffer as a result of this event have had to go through such a long time without closure isn't something that I would wish on anyone. I think that when a crime of any magnitude is committed, those that are guilty of the crime need to be prosecuted in a timely manner. If this isn't able to happen, then the guilty parties need to be punished to a greater degree.
