We have a DVD player again! But what can we watch?

Our old DVD player died and we didn't replace it until we got the new computer. Now we can watch films again! Because we've been without one for around two years I think I've missed a lot of films because there was no point seeing what was available. I'm not into horror or gore/splatter nor am I into chick-flicks. My favourite films have been Roxanne (the one with Steve Martin), Still Crazy, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Stardust, I Capture the Castle, The Mummy (just the first one) and Serenity. I quite like historical stuff but for comedy I prefer things like Spaced or Black Books and not American Pie type films. So, my fellow mylotters, any suggestions for good films of the past two years or so - or even some older than that if you think they are really good.

If you haven't seen UP you otta add it to your list. Here are some more recent ones: Law Abiding Citizen, Avatar, Paranoramal Activity, The Men Who Stare at Goats (funny) Here's some older ones: Silver Streak, Gangs of New York, Last of the Dogmen, Dances With WOlves, The Notebook, Grumpy Old Men, Grumpier Old Men, Secondhand Lions, The Pursuit of Happiness, Radio, I am Sam, and Never Cry Wolf.

The Men Who Stare at Goats sounds intriguing and looking at the cast even if the script was dire there would be some good performances.

I'm certainly not the person to ask. I think the most recent movie I saw at the theatre was "The Hunt for Red October." I really prefer the older movies. You've probably already seen this one, "Zulu." If you haven't seen it already, you might consider it. I think it's a great story of courage in an impossible situation, and it's true.

Oooh, Zulu, what a classic.... "Men of Harlech stop your dreaming Can't you see their spear points gleaming" They really don't make 'em like that any more!

Avatar, I haven't seen it, but I want to. It's supposed to be awesome according to all my friends. Up, now that I watched. At first, I didn't think I was going to like it. It's like a book, they give you a lot of background so you can understand the movie, without it, you wouldn't understand a thing. But after 15 minutes, or so, it takes off.
