Forgetfulness

This is certainly related to age. There was a time when I could reproduce from memory mathematical equations and derivations, on black board, that covers 10 fools cap size pages. I bet it was ‘error-free’; I used to prepare well for my classes; because any thing I write on the black board was noted by the students, which they will reproduce in examination. But after I crossed 55, I marked decrease in memory power, I used to carry written notes to check, if there was any error. Now also I attend workshops, seminars, present my research papers, but I use my laptop. I think this problem is getting severe now. When somebody asks me a cell number, some important date or some old friend’s name, I can’t tell instantly, though it is in tip of my tongue. Another thing I forget is my spectacles. I keep searching for this. At times it is on my fore-head, raised a bit over the eyes, but I search, it is my wife or somebody in the family, who points out. To avoid this I now keep 4 spectacles’ Last but not the least is my cell phone, now I clip this with a thread to my pocket. When out I keep in a ‘mobile-phone-box’ clipped to my belt over my pant. Where you keep yours? What about your memory do you face forgetfulness, please share your views. Professor

dear professor, i was all but smile to the responses of the younger generation. seems 24 is the age these guys and gals are starting to find that "ability to forget things". at 51, i find myself forgetful as well, my boss tells me to bring always some pen and paper when he is giving instructions, which i find very helpful. i have this right pocket in my skirt uniform where i put my cellphone. i have 3 specs one in my handbag, one in the desk drawer and the other one i place like a head band when i am not reading. have a nice day. ann

Remebering names do have a problem most do its right there on tounge but wont come out till maybe hours later. BUt this can happen at any age not really after ya turn a certqain age. DOnt lose glasses for I havethem on most of the time. As I have had to since I was 11. I mostly dont remember thing as I dont pay that much attention of what has been said! Another thing as when doing something and do something else you have things on your mind that turns you a different route. Carring notes are good to check with alot of people do not realy loosing what ya had just maybe a little slower at what you do but then the mind is a wonderful thing!

Mostly my memory is still pretty good. Where I have the most trouble is with names. When I meet more than one person, it is almost guaranteed that I will forget most or all of the names. As for my glasses, cell phone and other possessions, I am very obsessive about knowing where they are, so I have developed coping strategies. My glasses stay on my face anyway, since I need them for both regular vision and reading, and my cell phone stays in either my purse or my pocket unless it's being charged.

Age really counts professior2010! It is quite normal and you have to take precautions like what you have told and that's all. I am not that much old to forget things. I think, learning some music instruments or engaging yourself in any art will give a balance to your brain and you may not stumble more.

Hello,Prof.:-) It is no surprise, I believe that older persons suffer from memory gap. There are only lucky few who can very well remember dates and details vividly despite of their old age. I think it has something to do with the genes and the lifestyle, as well, of that person. I am not yet very old but I sometimes tend to forget about things, too, especially historical dates. (Oh, how I hate when I had to memorize the date of events in my history class.) After giving birth, I noticed that my mind is not as sharp as it used to be. Maybe the anesthesia has something to do with it or certain hormonal change also altered my brain function. Now, if I misplaced a thing, I'd try to remember things backward. Sometimes, it helps.:-) My husband who is 37 years old seems like you. He often forget where he put his things.Worse, it is always his wallet or bag with all his important docs like driver's license, atm cards, etc.:-)

Actually in my age of 21 I already have that kind of problem even a simple password or username I can't remember it that's why I always note it down when I make a register on some site, And now I have a list of all the site that I registered in. I really don't know what is the cause of it because I am too young to have that right? or is it normal? even my simple neckless and ring I always forgot where I put it after a several hours is there a reason why I got this in my age or does computer affecting my brain? But I notice I never forget my wallet nor the amount of money I got even I don't spend it for a long time like 1 week I don't spend anything and I am not visiting my wallet after that I still remember where I put it and the amount inside of it.

I can relate to this, Professor. I am almost seventy, and I'm sure my memory is getting worse. I have a theory that may explain a little what could contribute to our loss of memory. Memory training was something we used to do without realizing, years ago. I can remember I used to store many telephone numbers, and address in my mind. Now those days are gone, and we rely on our mobile/cell phones, or computers.

Prof, that might be a sign that you should be relaxing a little. Take a vacation. Enjoy life. Not that I mean that writing equations on the board is not a life. But there comes a time when one must see the world, without worrying about the whereabouts of the spectacles. Keep eating peanuts. Prevents memory loss. But that is according to my mom.

I think you need to do some sports, maybe it will help you. And I think eating habit is also very important. So be careful what you eat, for certain kind of food will have negetive influences on memory while other have positive influences, like eggs which are extremly helpful to improve one's memomry. But as an adult, one should at most eat two or three eggs or it will be harmful to one's healthy.

Hi Professor2010!. I seem age really bother you professor. I find it that way with my father he often forget where he pit his glasses, he will searching for it all over the house and often he doesn't find it so we all have to search it. From my dad case regular sport and healthy food really help improve it. My dad crazy fans of chess and I think that good for his brain.

Hello Professor, I am also having similar type of problems. It is now becoming a bit embarassing as children start laughing. I have crossed 61 years and quite sometime, I forget where I had kept the novel which I was reading, though it is kept at the same place where I keep it. I think it just happens with advancement of age. But forgetting names or numbers, telephone numbers or things I have to purchase which my wife had told me while going to market, are really embarrassing. Wee, we have to take what nature is giving to us.

I'm not that old yet. Being 24 is still a young adult. But the way you describe your memory problem is much like mine. Although I have not yet consulted a professional, I just claim that I have a short-term memory loss problem. However that is not always the case because when you ask me about the details of my college life, I'll answer I'll already forgot. That is absolutely not short-term and it was just a few years ago. Although I still remember some facts, the entirety of it is already buried in oblivion. My own assumption about my case is because of my easy-going nature. I'm so care-free that everything seems to be not a big deal and therefore do not need to be remembered specifically. For four years already, I'm still not confident that I memorized my own cellphone number. I still check it against my phonebook. My reason, it's in my phonebook, why do I need to memorize it? I know it's absurd. But the probable reason for this poor memory of mine is that when an information is written somewhere, I don't bother remembering it because I can always refer back to it.

Maybe the age is an important factor of forgetfulness. But I am 27, I always forget to do things that I planed several minutes ago. Maybe it's my character of forgetfulness. In some aspects, I can remember every details about the story I like it or the teleplays that played several years ago. It is very magic. I think do some notes on the notebook that you want to know or want to do.
