2012...The end as we know it?

So I read a bunch of natural disaster discussions yesterday and It got me thinking about the whole "2012" doomsday theroy. I remember years ago watching programs about it on the history channel back in the 90's and even now, how the mayan and chinese calanders end on Dec 21 2012. I have always read about major and biblical catastrophies througout the earths lifetime. Is it just that news travels so fast that it seems unnatural for all of these events to be happening or is there something or someone greater closing in on the demise of our planet? My personel thought is that it's nothing new. Their has been and will be horrible things that happen on and to this planet, whether by human destruction or natural courses of earth.

Climate Change, Global Warming & the predicted end of our earth in 2012 are all inter-related. This should be given a whole lot more of our attention than we currently give to it & truly is the most serious international issue of our time. It has already killed hundreds of thousands of us & affects hundreds of millions of humans as well as other species besides. The date of 2012 was the prediction of the ICCP, NASA scientists & the UN. They believe that there's one cause behind the disasters & the Earth will react in many ways, but will ultimately emit gas from the land & oceans (as is starting to happen now), so not even plant life will survive & this has happened before. Many of the damaging & often fatal effects in the lead-up to 2012 we have already witnessed such as hurricanes, flooding, droughts, fires & heatwaves. The Arctic may be ice-free by 2012, some seventy years ahead of ICCP predictions. Without the protective ice to reflect sunlight, 90% of the sun's heat can enter open water, massively accelerating Global Warming. The recent change in Arctic ice cover is dramatic, with climatologists saying that only 10% now is older & thicker ice, while over 90% of what remains is newly-formed & very thin. Another Arctic change is the thawing of permafrost, a normally frozen layer of earth containing huge methane stores. The recent thawing of this layer since 2004 has caused methane to be released into the atmosphere. Further Global Warming beyond two degrees Celsius may cause billions of tons of methane to be released, leading to mass extinction of life on Earth. As the massive ice sheets of Greenland & the Antarctic continue to melt as well, catastrophic sea level rise & storm are expected to follow. If the entire West Antarctic ice sheet melts, average sea levels would rise by about 3.5 meters, affecting over 3.2 billion people - or half the world's population - who live within 200 miles of a coastline. US scientists from the National Snow & Ice Data Center say that if all Antarctic ice were to melt, sea levels could rise by 70 meters... To be continued later today with much, much more!

I agree with your post. We will never know when will everything ends. Recently, there have been many reports about the gradually destruction of our earth resources. If these things will continue, it will expedite the end of the world. So people! We must take care of our resources. Just by throwing your garbages in the proper places, segregating and joining simple programs that are environmental friendly

I had written an article on the metal band "Killing Jokes" and I saw that they believe firmly in the Mayan calendar which say the end of the world is in 2010, well it is December 21st 2012. I think there will be natural calamities but not to the extend of destroying the whole planet and after all as you say this is man's action's consequences.

Hey Jstewart! As far as i know there are a lot of theories about the end of the world, some of them are going to happen soon others have allready "happened" so i just don't believe in them :).There is a lot of time before the sun is going to "run out of fuel" so we have plenty of time on our hands. In my opinion all the circumstances for bad things to happen on our planet are man-made.Global warming is a result of thickening the ozone layer,We are running out of fossil fuels,We are cutting the natural " lungs " of the earth. So all the problems we are currently having and are going to have are going to be made by ourselves.I don't think we can do anything to stop what we are doing so i'm just living my life the best i can.I suggest You do the same. Happy mylotting

True, I agree mostly. but the earth emits alot of what is killing off the ozone, I mean that volvcano in iceland really ate up the same amount of the ozone that had been done in the last 100 years or so; I read that in a few differant articles? I don't really know I read things that say the oppisite too, but it seems to make sense that if it can coat two diffeant countries away with all that stuff it spews out that it would end up in the atmosphere. I do agree with you to just enjoy life and drive on. thanks for the response.

I've always wondered how come both Europe's and Mayan's use the same way to calculate a year and a month? Also, has the Mayans made any other predictions (assuming this is a prediction) that was right? My prediction is nothing will happen, and if, say, and earth-quake happens somewhere in the world around that time, robbing and riots are going to start all over. But that's if something happens that could "mark the beginning of the end"...

I think they have suggested that the calander has been right the entire time but It's easy to go back and say "oh yeah that what they mean and it was a prediction". but that's why I wanted to start up a discussion about it. get some opioins on it. but it did'nt really take off.

Hi! I too think its nothing new - I think that's what the Mayans felt too - that we have periods of renewal. I'm hoping to be chosen for the first real space mission! I need to get my massage therapy license - national exam - perfect for space - make sure muscles don't atrophy. And get a life coaching specializing in small groups together in limited space for long periods. LOL. Were I mechanically minded I'd get certification in maintaining the machines or cryo on board. I was hoping daniel would get transferred tot he white sands base - near where there building the wholde space station.

As my memory serves me right the sun goes into a new cycle in 2012. I've also read on a science site (Space.com) or another site, that the sun is abnormally quite this year. If something did happen with the sun, it shouldn't be the major end of the world, but some bad things will happen for satellitess and communications and it would be dangerous for our astronauts. I read somewhere on a site that before the Europeans came, there was a prophecy about the cross (serpent god) and that the civilization would end. The Aztecs under Montezuma fell after listening to a prophecy. The Maya did not have one ruler which made the Conquistadors quest a little more difficult. So the end of the Maya civilization was a gradual thing. The same goes for 2012 according to some Maya. The end of civilization as we know it will be gradual and enlightening. I wish I could remember the site, but another site has it that a cross (serpent god) will have something to do with the end of civilization. I take it as being the AntiChrist which was similar to what the Conquistadors did in the name of Christ. It had nothing to do with Christ but more to do with wealth and prosperity for the conquerors. According to one present day Maya, they were looking for the return of an ancestor who would come "like a butterfly". http://astrology.about.com/od/2012/a/MayanElder.htm And lastly, I've always hear rumors that the world would end when we have a Black president. It was a joke amongst some Blacks that America was so racist the world would end first before we have a Black president. I fear that Obama may lose the next election and things will be worse. Well at least you have another idea to put under your cap. 2012 is not that far away. Here is a good Youtube film of the fall of the Aztecs, Maya, and Inca. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lcx7JlDeiNk&feature=related

Hello welcome to mylot I just wonder why one should get worried, i have strong faith that it is not going to end in december 21st 2012 exactly, well even if it is, can we prevent that? The way we are playing with mother earth, is sufficient to blow it out any moment.. Thanks for sharing. Welcome always. Cheers. Professor

Alot of theories have come up about this date, and the movies and discussions have flamed the topic. In my opinion, let's just wait and see what happens. It may be the real armageddon or another of the times where we could say, "oh well, it was just another theory that has passed, how many more are there?".

I personally see many movies with taht theme and read a few books. The maya people spaek about a new beginning but I am concerned about what happend to planet: when the planet is move also are pepole move, after naturals eartquaques are people eartquaques (social moves).
