Tornado - Tornadoes cause high levels of Property damage and deaths

We, here in Southern Ontario Canada, had a big Earthquake yesterday. I say"big" because it was a 5 on the rectum scale, and that's very big for us. I was in the house at the time and never felt anything. (Last quake of this size was 20 years ago.) There was a tornado here in Ontario also, that did a few Million in damage but no deaths. Ontario gets very few hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, or earthquakes, seldom has a power loss, and has no illegal immigrant invasions. How do you feel about your place of residence? Do you worry about natural disasters?

Agreed, barehugs. We are not known here in Ontario for our natural disasters. Tornadoes are very rare, although one did touch down and tore up our local Co-Op a few years ago. It was very surprizing to have another touch down within a half hour's drive from me. I have family there and contacted them immediately to see how they were. My daughter was volunteering after the Mayor called a "State of Emergency" on the town. There are still several roads closed and the power was out for 8,000 ppl yesterday, but the Hydro company is working around the clock to get people back up and running. My cousin's house (farm) was just barely spared. It wiped out the tree line (big, mature trees) on the northern border of their property and their neighbour, then went down the highway to tear up all the hydro poles and telephone lines. Luckily there were no fatalities, which I find amazing, since it isn't like we are in a state of preparedness for these kind of events. But we are all country folk, so will take it in stride and rebuild what has been damaged and carry on.

as one Farmer to another I agree that natural disasters are foreign to us. Perhaps we are spoiled but I like it that way.WE did have an ice storm that did some damage about 10 years ago. And the temperature got up about 30C. 3 times last summer!

Yes, I remember the ice storm, it was quite nasty. You are right, we are somewhat spoiled. I do believe it is the best place to live. My girlfriend keeps telling me that it is beautiful out west and I should move there. Yet, I am in the best province for marketing my lambs, right here in Ontario. In fact, the price is so high here, compared to the west, they often ship lambs from out west to our ON markets. And it costs $50/head to do so by the thousands in pot belly trucks. Plus, they experience drought and floods at a much higher rate than we do here. We must be geographically protected and one of the reasons the bulk of the population chose to live here eons ago. Although, I must say, this year, we haven't been able to get any hay off sucessfully yet because it won't stop raining for more than a day or 3 at most and that just isn't enough time to cut, dry and bale hay. *sigh*

And as for the earthquake....never felt it, I was in the midst of loading and transporting 2 horses from another farm home, though, so was fairly preoccupied, so I must have been driving the horse trailer when it happened, I dunno. But I didn't even know we had ever had another earthquake here in Ontario before.

hi barehugs No I do not worry about earthquakes as we have hundreds of minor shakes all the times so Iam very used to it. I cannot stop a bit one if it comes.so will have to deal with it then. but to stew about something you cannot cure or prevent becomes silly and self defeating too.I live in Southern California home of shake, rattle and roll country. since I have no money to move else where Iam stuck here so make the most of it. As for illegal immigrants we have had them for years.we will continue to have them until Mexico decides to help her own people.I feel we should hire about one hundred large trucks and shape themn up and ship them out back across the border.

WEll I can't imagine the shake, rattle and roll of a big Quake. This little one just jiggled the dishes in the cupboard a little bit.

Hi barehugs, I couldn't agree more, those of us who live in Canada are very fortunate. There isn't another place in the world where I would rather live. In more than seventy years I've never experienced anything worse than a snowstorm which knocked out power for a few hours. Blessings.

Well, Do I have news for you? Move to Ontario, and you won't have to wait for Armageddon. (Only God knows when that will happen, and She isn't telling!) So until then, the safest place to be, is right here in Paradise, (Ontario, Canada.) where everything is already Perfect!

I am sorry, but I think you meant 'Richter Scale' as opposed to 'Rectum Scale'. I wonder what a Rectum scale would measure.... The place we are living, there are not much disaster unless you count extreme heat. It is hot hot hot. And yes, we have lots of power cuts. It is almost daily occurrence. It is not the surprising when we have power cuts for 1 hour or so.

Dear sir. I can imagine your beautiful place to live and I admire you very much. You live in such a quiet and peace city which is far from the noisy and nature disasters. I am a Chinese, I live in Beijing. Beijing, now, is a big city. Many people from all parts of the world gethered in there. That made it unsuitable for live.(I think so.) As for the nature disatera, I think it is a relative things. The ratio of happening natur disaster is not the same in different place. I don't worry about the natural disaster, because the God can protect me, if I am a good person.

To be sure! But I live on a centennial farm which has been in the family since 1905. I love it here because its quiet and peaceful. Just the birds singing and the bees humming. Occasionally a cow loses her calf, and she bawls like crazy until she can find it again.

people who live here in phoenix arizona, usa, say there are no desasters either, but i still say what they call a "micro burst" IS a tornado!! not any other natural disasters here really, but im still concerned about water. this place is the worst for drought. and with the BP thing im scared this country is going to have problems keeping fresh water of any kind eventually

I heard about what happened in your province there. It was in the news a while ago, I'm from the Philippines. The province where we live here is prone to Earthquakes, we actually experienced a Killer Earthquake back in 1990, I was just 8 then. We are located in the mountain ranges so we have landslides then and the buildings in the city crumbled. All roads back then were inaccessible. Our place are also prone to landslides especially when it's rainy season. Many homes and lives were taken by landslides here. But people still want to build their houses in the mountainsides because it is close to their farms.

I am so jealous. I live in tornado alley, have lots of displaced Chicago residents and many immigrants. I love Canada. I've been everywhere in Canada. No lie! My favorite place? Banff and Jasper in the Canadian Rockies. Second favorite, the northern reaches, (great fishing).

I love to have storms every once in awhile. It makes life interesting sometimes. But never pray to have a disaster. That would be too far.

A good storm is best after a drought. I'd never pray for a disaster because we have no control on how big it will be.
