How do you get through a painful examination or treatment?

When you need an unpleasant or painful examination, treatment, dental treatment etc how do you handle the situation? What do you tell yourself to help you calm down and get through the situation? I'd like to hear about your experiences and the way that you handle the situation, because my own thoughts tend to get extremely negative when I am in that kind of situation. I would like to change that and I would like to learn to get through the situations in a better way.

I just think that it will be over in a few minutes. Dental treatments, I think are the most painful treatments I've had. It also helps that my dentists reassure me, "just a little bit more" even though in truth they still have to drill a big hole. I've read before that it is better not to close your eyes because the darkness will somehow magnify your feeling, which makes sense because darkness could be associated with bad feelings like fear and dread. Hope you handle it well tomorrow!

Thank you. I hadn't thought about the thing about closing your eyes, but I think that it makes sense and that the darkness could actually make the situation worse. My appointment is tomorrow morning and at least that is better than having to wait all day, because that would make me even more nervous.

Right! Waiting makes it seem more scary. Better get it over and done with rather than drive your self crazy worrying about it during the day. I sincerely hope you make it through tomorrow.

Hi,dear porcpspino. I absolutely agree with you,to know how the whole thing works really helps you calm down, otherwise you may become more nervous or scared.Still remember last time when I visited my dentist, which must be the worst experience in my life. The surgery last 1h, the doc kept inform me which process we were in because I asked him to do so at the beginning of the operation. And also I held my mom's hand all the time,I think these 2 things made my operation not that horrible.

I also think that it is less horrible when you have someone who supports you. My husband knows how I feel about the situation and he always comes with me

I understand what you mean. I still remember the time when my wisdom tooth was infected, it was a really painful experience. I also had problems with some of the other wisdom teeth, but one of the extractions was especially painful. I am happy to hear that your mother was able to support you. In the past I always went to the dentist alone, but now my husband comes with me, and that is a big help.

Well, I am terrified of going to the dentists, especially if I have to have a filling, as I am phobic anout the drill. I ask the dentist to talk me through what he is doing and how long it will take, which helps, as I feel informed then. They have the radio on and I try to concentrate on the radio. I also tense my hands into fists and squeeze my hands together to concentrate on that feeling, instead of any pain.

My dentist usually talks me thorugh the things she is doing and I also think it helps me get handle the situation. If I don't know what is going to happen I get more anxious. Squeezing your hands also sound like a good idea because that can help you focus on something else. Someone once told me that it was a good idea to pinch yourself, that way you create a pain that you are able to control, and you can try to focus on that pain instead of the things that the dentist is doing.

There are lots of ways you can help yourself. The first is probably to deal with your psychological stigma bit. Make sure you relax yourself, get yourself to be in a happy mood before hand, make yourself laugh a lot, get friends and family round to support you. This is because when you laugh or when you're in a good mood, your body releases more endorphins, this hormone is your body's natural painkiller, so when you have high levels of this present in your body, you are much more immune to pain and trauma. On top of this, you can use natural botanical oils, like lavender oil to calm and relax you, and I think there are also other oils that you can use - like Bach's Rescue Remedies, I used to work with a lady who is terrified of the dentist, and she would stock up on bottles of these and use some of it before she went to the dentist -I think it's a couple of drops placed under the tongue for absorption or something similar. There are several different oils in the series, all designed for different specific purposes. Let your dentist / or carer know when you go in for your appointment. Let those around you know that you have difficulties and suffer badly from panic attacks or stress from the situation, so hopefully they will make some concession for you, if you do break down... I hope this helps.. :) xx

Thanks for your advice and it very useful The thing about the endorphins is interesting. I have heard about endorphins before, but I didn't really think about the connection between happiness and pain. It makes a lot of sense and I will keep that one in mind! I am thinking about giving myself a kind of reward after the treatment so that I have something to look forward to, and that might also help me find some happiness. I have read about Bach rescue remedies, but I have never tried to use them. I will try to find out more, because it sounds like it could be worth a try

I have a very low threshold to pain. So before I proceed with a procedure that I expect to be painful, I usually take an analgesic an hour before the procedure. It would also help if you would ask the doctor which part of the procedure you would feel the pain if you're the type who wants to get prepared. But at times, it would be more helpful not to know about the possible pain you might encounter during the procedure because at times, pre-empting the situation would make t more difficult. And I also usually bring my partner with me when I am to go through a painful or unpleasant procedure, knowing that there would be somebody to look after you and tell your doctor to take it slow on you would build a little confidence.

Taking an analgesic is a good idea, I often do the same thing and it makes it a little easier to handle the situation. My husband usually comes with me when I have to go through a painful examination or treatment, and it is nice to know that he is there, it helps me get through the situation. I am scared of the dentist and it helps me to hold my husband's hand when I get anxious.

The most painful process for me would be an injection or drawing blood because I hate needles. I don't think I handle it very well but I do get through it. What I do is just clench my teeth, close my eyes and try to think about something else besides the needle about to be stuck in my skin. Actually, it is not just painful and I think the fear is just psychological so when I don't think about it (if I could), it hurts less.

Have patience. Get courage along. It really helps. wait for things to happen at their own time. What ever is the problem, it will never last for long. Sit and pray to Jesus for an hour everyday. Ask him to give you strength and courage to face the situation. He loves you and would never want your problems to last longer. Pray always because prayer is the most powerful medicine in the whole world. It is the best solution for every kind of problem.

I am a big baby! I hate a low tolerance for any kind of pain. I will get a shot to numb the area if possible. I just keep telling myself to relax, and that it will be over soon. A lot of people find it helpful if the doctor tells them what is going to happen. I don't want to know, I just want them to do it and get it over with.

I often tell myself the content of the test will be what I had reviewed .If I encounter some hard questions that I can't anwser,I think others are the same with me , they can either figure out .So I am the best. Before I get the paper ,I often feel nervous .But when I get the paper ,I will be very calm .Maybe it is my gift ,I don't know why.

i feel very horrified seeing medical instruments that will be used against me, and so everytime i go to the dentist i have to cover my eyes till the end of the dental session so that ill never get to see the instruments. as well as i always bring someone with me whom i can hold to so as to ease my anxiety. music is another means of relieving tension.
