You may want to try sourdough rather than actual yeast. It's much easier to do. Here's a good website for instructions on sourdough:

You can make yeast water by filling a jar almost all of the way with pure (bottled) water. Add some raisins to it and loosly close the lid. Let it sit at room temperature. When all of the raisins are floating, there should be a foamy coating on top of the water. That's when you know that your yeast water is ready.

Humm interesting I had never hear of that one. I might try that come Christmas time when I have raisins in the house.

I had no idea you could grow your own yeast. Then again I don't use it much. Very interesting discussion topic! One learns something new everyday.
