Do you plug in your laptop every time you're at home or in the office?

I am a first time laptop user. I bought my first netbook just a couple of weeks ago. My husband says I should plug in the laptop to an electrical outlet every time I'm working on it and only use up the battery when I use the laptop out of the house. I'm not sure if that is wise. Won't the battery be overcharged? How often do you drain your laptop's battery? I used to think that I should unplug the power cord every time the charge says it's already at 100%. Kinda like how we use cell phones. Just charge them when the power needs to be replenished. Now, I am not so sure. Would appreciate it if some of you could share your experiences. Thanks!

Laptop batteries only last about an hour. I keep mine plugged into the electrical outlet all the time, unless I need to move it to the printer to hook it up and print something. You will not be overcharging your battery if you have it plugged in all the time. In fact, when I unplug my laptop I get a pop-up message telling me that by not having it plugged in I am draining my battery. Keep it plugged in.

I always keep my laptop plugged in unless my dad is using it in the living room. I rarely use it without the plug in the wall and I don't have to worry about the laptop battery dying on me.

My laptop is almost always plugged in whenever I use it or not, especially the old one. Now I am using a new one and I try not to have it plugged in when not being used if I remember. I don't think that it matters when it is not being used or when it is switched off, but make sure that it is unplugged when there is lightening in case it is not damaged by the lightening. Enjoy your newly-bought laptop.

Yes, I always plug in my laptop whenever I have to use it in the boarding house because I took the battery off because it is easily drained, so to continue my work without any interruption, I just plug it in and just pull out if I am finish with my work.

I just got my laptop two months ago and have the same idea as your, but I have power on when I work in the office. At home I only used charged battery and when it runs out of power and I stop working and recharge it the next day just by useing my laptop to work in the office. I do this not to overheat my laptop.

I suggest take out the battery of your netbooks/laptoip when you plugged it in (assuming the battery is already charged at 100%). This prolongs your battery life since one of the culprits in the degradation of battery life is heat.

Yes, I do but I always remove the battery from the laptop so that my battery will not be over charge. I have another laptop that used to plug every time I am home. I did not remove the battery. Often its overcharge which resulted to damage. The battery did not last for a year. With this laptop that I am using right now, I only use the battery when I am out of the office or out of the house. I made sure that I do not overcharge also. Well, its been a year already and still the battery works perfectly well giving me maximum hours of use.

When I have bought my first laptop, many friends told me that if you used a electrical outlet, you should pull down the battery. But later, some friends told me that you should not pull down the battery, orelse which did harm to the computer. This really bothered me so much and for a long time,I use my laptop this way. Now,it must use a electrical outlet orelse the battery can only hold a few seconds, just one more hour.I only can tell you that you must take care your computer carefully and use it in right way, which can extend its life. That's my opinion, have a nice day~

With many tips from previous users, you can get an idea of what to do with the battery. I used my laptop for about 6 years, in the beginning I never used the battery. Until recently I read about the tips on how to keep the battery in shape. That's when I found out that my computer has a battery calibration function, which will do a total charge/discharge cycle to recalibrate the battery. Even you never use the battery, it will still wear out. As high temperature and constantly stay on full charge will affect the battery life. I usually discharge the battery once a month, just to "train" it not to have a memory effect. Now my battery can run about 3 hours on lowest power consumonption, even after 6 years. "Exercise" your battery can help prolong its life, you never know when you will be needing the battery.

hello writermom8! i've been a laptop user since 2000 and i always plugged in my laptop when i'm near an electrical outlet. i only use it on battery during power failures or when i'm far away from an electrical outlet. actually, i don't know if it's doing my laptop's battery any good, but i do what i do because i don't want to be caught red handed by power failures. example, just when you are about to finish an important report, and the power suddenly went off, and your battery is almost empty, so what you're gonna do? my laptop's batt is not functioning as it was been when it was new, but i guess its because of its wear and tear, i don't know if it's because i do waht i do,plugging it in its fully charged.

I usually use my laptop without the battery on it.Only when I need to use it outdoor would I plus in the laptop. But I don't charge it until I use up the battery everytime.I think we can just charge the battery when we need our laptops for a long time.I don't think that I can use my laptop longer than the battery life.So just charge it!

I am also a first time user of laptop. I bought my Acer laptop in May, and I was advised the same. I do that all these times. When I work in my office have the power plugged to the power point and have the battery charged as well and powering the laptop. When I go home, I use my lap top with the charged battery. I stopped working when the battery is used up and repeat the process everyday and it becomes a custom to me now. There are reasons why I do that. Frist, I used my private laptop for work so I used workplace supply to charge my battery and use battery power to save electricity thus cost. Seocnd, I believe, using battery will reduce the risk of overheating of computer from the main power supply. This i sjust my belief and it is not a proven technical theory.

when i frist use laptop,i use to took down the battery form laptop, because i have the same idea with you.but after some time,i found that there will be no need to take down the battery or unplug the power when it's already fully charged.because system will stop charging when battery is filled,so plug power will have no affect to it.if you use your laptop in the house or office usualy, you may let the battery discharge totally within a period of time, that may prolong the using life of the battery to a large extent.

Well I work at a restaurant so I don't get to use the computer while I am working but whenever I am at my house I like to log on to a good amount of my online earning sites and just get to work. It's a great way for me too relax and help pad my savings account for the future. Online earning has provided me with a way for me to pay my way through college as well as just overall give me an extra income that will help me out. Also online earning entertains me as long as I am listening to my favorite music. I like to do it whenever I can because the more active you are the more you will usually benefit from your sites. It's nice knowing about these earning opportunities because I know that not everyone is fortunate enough too.

Hello writermom8, I do use the cord switch or the plug of laptop whenever I am at home or office in order to prolong the life span of the battery. Battery should be remove from laptop when not in use because the surface of the battery becomes hot when it is still attached in the machine. Hence, when that happens, battery discharge. However, if you wish to use the battery, you may recharge it in a couple of hours or recharge the battery until it is fully charge. But, dont use the battery at the same time when you are using the power cord.

I guess, in a country like India, where power cut-offs are common, you should consider plugging in the laptop everytime...!!

Yes batter will be overcharge don't doing like that. what I do when I'm in home I pull out the battery and then I plug battery charger. I just use batter when I go out for garden and I plug again when battery is 4% in the end , and wait till batter will be 100% charger then again pull out battery.

laptops are not like mobiles the best thing about the battery and the laptop is that it has a function that when the battery is fully charged it stops supplying the battery with electricity therefore, the laptop battery never gets over charged therefore, you do't need to worry about losing the laptop's battery over this. but, draining the battery fully is not good.
