Finding myself with grandkids to entertain when they are all swum out from the pool and it's raining outside I more than often turn to cooking to provide them with some entertainment. I did this with my kids too and they all have turned out as great cooks, I think it is an inexpensive, fun and educating way to keep the kids happy - even if it can be a little messy! My grandkids love making sausage rolls and fairy cakes best, what are your children's favourite things to cook? Here are 8 year old Harry and 6 year old Alice making a mess and some cakes!!

That is so sweet and makes me miss my grand mother Maria. She cooks a lot for us. She cooks not just ordinary food, but she cooks really good. I remembered her cooking specially during Christmas. Instead of me eating my Mom's cooking i would run to my Grandma's house to eat. She would always find some time to prepare a meal for us, her grandkids. She also encourage us to watch and help her do the filipino sweets. For me she will always be the best cook, my mom learned how to cook from her too. I'm sure your grandkids are very glad to cook and bake with you. Cooking and baking with your grandkids creates a good bonding between you and them. They will always remember Grandma's cooking :)

Hi Oldchem, My son loves to make fairy cakes with me too, wealso make chocolate cornflake cakes and he will help prepare the meal, especially something like corned beef hash, even helps with peeling the potatoes. On the fairy cakes we sometime colourthe icing and write things with an icing pen on them, wemade a massive batch with red icing and a cherry for Red Nose Day last year too. Lovely pic, a hive of activity. Huggles. Ellie :D

I cook with my grandkids a lot. Their favorite is to make homemade bread and cinnamon rolls. If I am making bread and they come over, they like to take over and finish it! We also make pies and cookies. Maybe Fairy cakes would be better then our cupcakes, it seems here when ever we have cupcakes, they like the frosting off and we throw away the cake! I think I could fill the cup with frosting and they would be happy!!

These kids are very picky eaters and would not eat coconut! My kids were not picky and I didn't have a choice, it was on the table and you ate it. But the majority of american children are picky. Now the #1 ? is "What will the kids eat?" I even know a few mom's that cook a variety of food cause of what each one will or will not eat. Not that all american children are this way but working with the kids at church and watching parents in restruants its a lot that are!

Lol!! Another thing they like to do is spread jam on the top of the cakes and dip them in dessicated coconut!

I rememeber cooking with my grandmother when I was younger. I cooked during the summer and especially during Christmas. I still do a lot of baking around Christmas time and cannot wait until I have kids of my own to share this experience with. I think it is great to teach kids how to cook. It teaches them math skills. There are a lot of easy recipes that kids can follow. My sister cooks with my oldest nephew who is almost 8 and triplets who are 5. The younger kids love to mix things in and pour in the ingredients. My oldest nephew measures everything.

Well it does teach all sorts of skills - numeracy in weighing, literacy in following a recipe, manual dexterity with the cooking itself and also a love of food!! I love cooking with kids!!

A child who learns to cook at its mothers knee will always be able to cook for itself in later life. It sounds a bit like 'An Oldchem thought of the day' that, doesn't it!!

I have a son now 14 who would be the biggest mcdonalds junkie in the world. He always says my cooking is horrible and that is why he has to have mcdonalds.lol.Anyway I found the only way for him to eat at home is if he does the cooking or at least helps me do the cooking. He is also learning cooking at school so he thinks he is the worlds best cook now,so I just let him cook, make a mess etc, at least I know he is eating healthy and he is having fun as awell.

I believe that cooking with your kids will eventually cause them to develop some special skills, but I'm not sure which.
