Any tips for getting rid of writer's block?

I usually write really much. One of my part time jobs is really boring and I have a little notebook in which I write everything that comes up to my mind - novels, short stories, long chapters, articles, blog posts and so on. But what do you do when you're stuck with writer's block and can't get a story out of your mind? I usually write a bunch of words about the story I want to write, the firsts that come up in my mind, on a white sheet, and then try to find something, a sentence, a story, a thought, for every single one of them. When a word doesn't tell me something, I just strike it and go on the next one, until I know what to write. And you?

I had the same thing happening right now. I usually finished something in just a few hours or a few days, for a long one, but since I became busy with work and the married life, as if I lost the touch. I also stop reading books and not much in the internet anymore. I had a different priority right now (family) but I still do like to scribble as much as I wanted it and be back on my passion to write.

Do you read much when you want to write something? I usually don't, to be honest, I always have the fear the writer's style will mix up with my own one. Should I read something then..? And having family as a priority is not bad at all, quite the contrary!

Someway you are right okuribi. But when you come to a block as you call, which happens quite normally to everyone, reading a book or anything for that matter, can clear the block and you can proceed.

I actually never thought I could write something and never would have polished it if not for my reading of books, journals and magazines. By reading them, I was able to pick words and phrases (not copying them) that seems to be related to what's in my mind and to the topic I wanted to get out of my thoughts. You don't have to copy the others style but simple gather ideas and patterned it the same way you used to. And as what hanuma said, you might be able to see what you are looking into on what you read. Another thing is to relax and give yourself a time to rest, specially your mind.

Writer's Block sucks big time. When it happens to me, I usually take it as a sign that I need to take a break from the process. So I go to the movies or the gym just to clear my mind. Sometimes, I burn myself out emotional and physically when write something good, so eating and taking a nap helps. Usually taking a day off or two helps. In that time, I go through old notebooks and review ideas or just edit my material. If I come across something really good, it can really re-energize me. If it gets really bad, I just start writing anything, doesn't matter whether it makes sense.

That's the right action. If one is keen on writing, write anything. Good idea. Thanks. I too can benefit from your suggestion.

I do it sometimes as well, just sit down and write anything that comes up in my mind, even if they're just sensations and they don't make sense at all. And burning yourself emotionally and physically might work as well, if I weren't so tired after coming back home that I wouldn't have the power to do anything except soundly sleep for hours - but then again, sleep might be a medicine as well, sometimes. Thank you for your answers!

When I want to get rid of writer's block I usually try to work somewhere else for a while. I go to a coffeeshop or something like that, I listen to people around me and watch people come and go and sometimes that helps me find new inspiration. It also helps me to visit another town and walk around in the streets, look at the people, the houses etc while I think about the story or the poem that I am working on. Walking is often a help for me, I seem to get more ideas that way. Sometimes I have plenty of ideas I just can't seem to get started, in that case I usually try to write something without being too critical, I might delete most of it later on, but sometimes there are a few lines that I can use.

Get out and about, that's what I do and stop writing for a bit. Just go places and explore, go somewehre you've been to before, and break up that routine, that usually helps me with my ideas. Or sometimes, watching a good film also does it for me too :)

Yes, sometimes I do break my routine by going out for a long walk with my notebook with me, just in case my muses come back. :) You watch movies too? Related to the topic of the story you're stuck writing or not?

I leave my work for a while. Take a good walk around somewhere. Sometimes, I just take a short coffee break and when I get back, I'm ready to hit the keys again.

Go out and see people. conversing with friends or sometimes stranger gives you a different perspective or a different point of view. Those people can give you fresh new things to talk about. If you're having a writer's block it's probably because you've been facing the computer for a long time than you probably should.

Every writer gets a bit of writer's block from time to time. The only thing that works for me is to do something else for a little while to get your creativity flowing again. Whatever makes you makes you happy and stimulated is the thing to do. Then go back to your writing. The only thing a writer can do is keep on writing.

While all the stories or anecdotes I have written in the past simply evolved from whatever came to mind, I think that focusing on the plot of the story will get you to hurdle these inconvenient gaps in your train of thought. For instance, I'm planning to write a blog story based on a quest plot. Knowing the requirements of a quest story, I can simply add the missing pieces and move the characters a certain way. And since I'm aware of other quest stories like Don Quixote, I can simply open the book and get inspiration from there.

Try making out a list of ideas and topics that your are interested in then branch off from there. You can always look around you at products you own... maybe wright a review on them or something.
