SO the North eastern part of the USA is in the midst of a heat wave. We personally have spent as much time as we can in either the pool or the creek playing in the water. The rest of the time we have hidden in the a/c. I know there are other ways to keep cool and am looking for a few of them as it seems this heat will not be going away anytime soon. I cannot spend the entire time out of doors as we have a new baby who is less than two weeks old. So what are others doing? where are you and are you in the heat wave as well?

I put bottles of water in the freezer and let them get so cold they border on ice. It helps a lot. It's hard to stay cool in my apartment because of my front door. It needs better weather proofing, but according to the apartment manager, they have done all they can. But turning up my AC more makes my electric bill even higher. I am going to look for a cheap fan to run in my living room. My bedroom stays cool just fine, just not my living room. You could get one of those spray bottles and fill it with water to spritz on yourself every now and then. Not necessarily your face, maybe even your neck or your legs if you're wearing shorts. And if it gets really bad, you can put your underwear in the fridge for about 15 minutes before putting them on. Let me know if you get that desperate!

Now why would you want to know how desperate I am? I had not thought of underwear in the freezer. A fan will help a lot. I would recommend visiting the library during the heat of the day, but I know that does not help your dog.

Hi, Speaking of the heat wave, I am in Eastern Canada near the city of Montreal. We are hit by this heat with the high humidity. The last few days it is been around 30 to 32ºC or 86 to 90ºF and it feels around 40 to 45 or 104 to 113ºF. Tomorrow and the day after it will be hotter with a temperature forecast to 35ºC or 95ºF with near 45ºC or 113ºF humidex or heat index. It is very very uncomfortable. At least we have an air conditioner and we can sleep with it at nights. During the day, I am avoiding the sun and heat between 10 am and 6 pm, I always wait for the sun to lower in the horizon. It is still very hot and muggy but not as bad at noon. Also with this dry and warm summer, we are having drought problems in the province of Quebec. All the rivers are historically low and some rivers that are usually impossible to cross by foot are now so low that we can cross these rivers easily with boats. It is bad. Also, our forest are burning out of control. This summer is a major contrast comparing to the summers of 2008 and 2009. They were much cooler, rainier and nastier. But what can we do? We don't have a choice to live with it and to enjoy this summer as much as possible. Well, enjoy this summer!

I live in the North East USA too so I'm getting the same heat wave you are. Luckily for us it stays somewhat cool in our house if we keep it closed up. I have a fan in my window at night because it gets warm upstairs. That helps cool it down. My kids have a small pool that they play in. We also have a lawn sprinkler that we hook up to the house and run through lol.

people complain that it is too cold, then they complain its too hot! for me, i would rather have the cold than this stiffling heat. as for us, we are staying inside where it is cool and only going out when we need to.

I never complain when it is too cold. I would much rather the -40degrees in the winter than the +40 in summer. I do enjoy summer, just not this HOT!

I live in Canada and we're having pretty much the same kind of heat wave as you are right now. I'm somewhat lucky, as my apartment is on the first floor and doesn't face the sun at all during the day. So, it's usually cooler in my apartment anyway. Although I have to admit that I've had to keep my fans on, as I find without it the heat gets in.

I am so unhappy about this heat wave. I hate extremely hot weather to begin with. I've been in air conditioning all day. I wish I had a pool. I'll probably visit the nearest lake sometime soon. Today I worked, but I've been indoors all day and haven't ventured outdoors besides to drive my car. I'm in New Jersey.

Jersey so you have the humidity as well yuck! I moved out of Jersey to get away from that (partially) and I don't miss the muggy weather at all.

Yes, the humidity is the worst. If it was just the heat, I think I'd be able to deal. It's suffocating. Where did you move to?

You certainly want to keep the baby cool. Cool packs for you, like the ones from lunch boxes would be good. Let the baby go in just a diaper when at home, and lay on a cool sheet. I like to go to public places that have a/c for part of the day, like the library. I know you do not want to take the baby out among too many strangers, though. Use fans to keep the air moving, and put cold cloths on your neck. Your temps this week are what ours usually are.

Well...it's not really hot here. I actually wish it was so that it would feel more like summer but it is not hot...at all. It's not even warm, I had to wear a jacket yesterday. Some of my friends from other cities were saying how lucky I am because I don't have to experience the heat but I feel like I'm missing the real part of the summer. Oh well. Stay cool.

I live in Montreal, Canada, and we're feeling the heat, too! Honestly, as much as I hate my job, I am very thankful that its air conditioned. To stay cool, I pretty much hide indoors. While I usually spend a lot of time outdoors, during this heat I stay in my apartment with the air conditioner on. I have even moved my mattress to the living room because my bedroom gets too hot at night and it is impossible to sleep there. The worst thing about the heat is definitely the car rides! Getting in the disgustingly hot, oven-like car, and sticking to the seats is gross!

Yes here in KY we are having a heat wave going on as well. It is now after 8 at night and the temp is still at 87 and very muggy. It has been on the news all day on the heat wave and how to keep cool. When I go out I can stay cool as long as my feet are wet. I know this sounds crazy but it works for me. Good luck on keeping cool.

We are in the North western part of the US and our hit wave just began today. We are so happy. Why? Because all this time it was very cold. It's the most coldest summer I've ever seen. I prefer hot to cold no matter what! Even if it's too hot. What can I suggest for you? Lots of sunscreen, drink more water, eat friut, play in the pool, enjoy the weather. Summer should be hot. It's better this way.

When we have heat waves in here, I put for a couple of hours a bottle of water in the freezer, now here in Romania there is a strange mix, in the morning very hot and in the evening starts raining
