So I check my mail yesterday and someone sent me 20 bucks. So I know I have around 38 dollars in my account. I go to deposit the money so I can pay my electric bill. Which I mailed since I now have the money (I think)...The ATM was out of order. I am a little worried about it as not being able to make the deposit puts me at about 2 dollars overdrawn! This morning I check my account and a check I forgot about had gone through so I only have 19 bucks! Even if I deposit the 20 I can't cover the check for the electric now! lol! will this never end?? Ever mess stuff up like that?

Yep.. just about every week, but it's usually a lot worse. We typically live off our overdraft protection from our bank.. we've got it down to a science how to make sure all the smaller things go through first so that only the biggest one overdraws so we only get the 1 overdraw fee. Our paycheck is direct deposited so it's always covered the following week.. but we still do it again anyways. Well recently my bank decided not to cover overdraws anymore, you had to opt into it, which we did, but for some weird reason they aren't covering it anyways. I just bounced my power bill, and it was a disconnect notice too.. oh we're in so much trouble!! We're actually heading out today to try to get it straightened out.. wish us luck.

So far so good.. the power has not been shut off, today is payday so I took the money out to pay the power bill in cash at the store. Unfortunately that means our rent will be late again, and with a new owner they aren't as lenient as they were before so we're still worried about eviction... it's just snowballing here! I'm thinking of looking into a new bank that won't cause this many issues.. I'm so mad at my bank right now!

Good luck Kats!! I hope you got it all ironed out! i can remember paying my electric bill on a certain day because I knew it would go through the bank on a certain day. It would bounce but my check would be there by the time it came back through! But hey, it was cheaper to pay for one check fee than to pay a reconnect fee!

LOL. If you have a spouse like mine who forgets to tell you when he or she uses the debit card, you stay in that situation. LOL I have to go around following him if I want to make sure he doesn't use it and doesn't tell me about it. LOL I have started to call the bank before I pay anything over $10 just to make sure the money is there. LOL

Just recently I has taken all of the money that I had out of the bank at the ATM because I was going to be paying my electric bill in cash at the grocery store. I was cutting it close taking the money out and really only had about $2 left in my account once I pulled the money out. I got an overdraft notice in the mail several days later and I was confused. Apparently when the kids had convinced me to go through the drive thru at McDonlads almost a week before I took the money out it had STILL not been taken out of my account. It came through right after I took the money out of the ATM. The notice I got said that I had 5 business days to get the money into my account before they charged me the $35 fee. I got the notice on a Saturday on the 5th business day. It was less than an hour before the bank closed too. I got in there just to find out they had already charged me the fee. I did get it reversed though since I did get in there on the 5th business day and I was only a whole 28 CENTS overdrawn. I hope you figure out a way to get the money in there and not get charged a fee.

oh man! This sounds all to familiar!! that was part of the problem this time. I didn't calculate the holiday in and assumed (and we all know what that means!) that the check I wrote from one account to the other had already gone through! oh well!

Wow! That's one experience I wouldn't dream of having. As much as possible, I always see to it that the checks I issue are recorded properly. Also, I maintain a list of bills to pay every month so as not to miss any. It's hard to earn money especially these days so I'd rather not waste any on penalties and fines.

Hopefully, it will work out! We'll just have to wait and see I guess! I don't like wasting.. guess I better reorganize!

Yes, unfortunately, I have messed up like that often. I definitely need a better bill system and a better filing system. Papers seem to multiply like rabbits at our house! Important papers get lost easily that way. Don't you love it when the ATM is out of order??? It used to happen quite often where I lived before, but hasn't happened to me in a while. That is SO frustrating! Banks here often have their computer system down when I am in front of a teller. Wouldn't you think banks should get their act together a little better? I almost missed a really important payment one time because the computer was down. Good luck with your electric bill. I hope you were able to cover it in time. Know that you are not alone with things like that! : )

Yes in a similar mess when it came to money. I once went to work and on the way i realised that i forgot my wallet at home...i went to work...skipped my lunch as i had no money. Luckily i had the office cab for travelling. This has happened quite a few times.

Because our life has been out of whack for about eight weeks, my husband did this on my primary account. We both can sign on all the accounts, and he usually is faithful to keep them up to date. Needless to say we lost cash we needed.

Hi Macdingolinger, I messed up like that once many years ago. My daughter had lost a sneaker out playing with friends and I was pretty broke but thought I had at least enough to cover a cheap pair of sneakers for 5.00 just to get by until payday. I had made a math error in my checking account and I paid nearly 100.00 for that cheap little pair of sneakers with all the fees etc. It was such a nightmare that I shut my account and just used cash for years. If it hasn't gone thru and done it's damage yet, I'd borrow the money and deposit it asap. The fees for a bounced check are deadly now.

Hi Macdingolinger, Yes I always experienced that stuff. So every pay day what i always do is to save half of the amount for my bills so that when the cut off comes I already have half of it and then get the other half for the next pay day... It works for me.. i hope this will continue to be this way..

Who hasn't. However, I now make sure I have the money in the bank before I pay anyone anything. I don't like to be withdrawn because the fees are outrageous. In fact many times they are more then the bill you were paying.
