Our good deed saved the garden

The Juniors in my DD's Girl Scout Troop are trying to earn a bronze star. They are planting a garden to help out members of the troop who need help but also the local food pantry. So the leader sent out and e-mail and I FWD it to my hubby because we have a good tiller & he knows what he's doing. So we spent about 3 hrs yesterday helping them till up an area by school. Now I know it's quite a late start for a garden here but who knows how things will go right? Either way they got a tiller rental and it was awful simply awful barely took the grass up! In comes my hubby to the rescue w/ our tiller and boy did that make a difference! I don't think they would of had it tilled up if at all w/o our help or had to go about it the old fashioned way... shovel and pure muscles then hope after that they could try to till anything.
So after a 20 min rain delay we got it done. At home hubby asked if our DD's get any badge ect. I said no as we have a Brownie & a Daisy not a Junior... BUT I reminded him if we had not come along they would still be trying to dig out their area. Plus this is something could help the troop out (as well as our fellow scouts & food pantry) and didn't cost us anything but time + a lil gas to get the job done!
We will be going back this afternoon to help till further all the soil addatives and then help them plant.

Your daughters may not end up with a badge this time, but they have a glowing example of community willingness and help. They have ideas for when they are that age, and they know what is possible. You may get some stuff from the garden. Plant some cool weather crops and they should make, like peas, lettuce, spinach, and maybe beets and radishes. Good luck to the girls and good job.

Thanks for the additional suggestions! I e-mailed her about doing peas & beans in addition to the tomatoes they have. As the school only alotted them to use an 8x16 area and those would climb on the fencing not taking up too much more space then they already do.

hi I think its great that you and your hubbie helped them by tilling
up ground for a garden. I am sure there are a lot of veggies they could
start now and have produce by fall. What a great thing the troop is doing
raising a garden to help members of the troop and others who are in need of food help; thats what the meaning of girl scouts is all about. I hope
the troop gets their bronze medal. A million years ago I was a girl scout too and I had a wonderful time. I earned some badges and got to go to camp once each year for two years. then our troop faded out as the second world war approached and no woman seemed to want to be a leader for the girl scouts in that era.

Bummer you didn't get to continue with scouts. I didn't get to be one my mom said it was too expensive! Sadly speaking to my Aunt months ago she said if she knew I wanted to join she would of paid for me to join... a lil late for me. But she helps out with paying my kids dues & supplies wich is great!
Do you think the troop faded out because the women had to go to work in the factories doing the jobs of men while they were at war?

It certainly does. It'll be nice if we see more hands out there today to help! It's technically not my girls project but their troop & friends.

Your deed will do much more than help with the garden. You have set an example. They tried digging themselves and know how hard it is then you stepped in without asking anything in return. They will remember that! They may not remember the act itself but when someone needs help they will know what it feels like and may step in.
Little things that don't cost us much of an effort or money might not be a big deal to us but they are to others.

I figured we don't do a whole lot always for the troop, things we can't afford to do ect... BUT I thought this was one thing we could really help out with.

The hardest part is done but we still have to till in the amendments wich will take a lil bit of time. Then all we have to do is plant and set up a fence of sorts.
