Do you have problems controlling your expenses?

Yesterday I received my salary. I wasn't able to withdraw everything since my atm has a limit on how much I can withdraw in a day. That was really a good thing since last night I was really in the mood to shop and spend. I went to the mall with a friend and just couldn't resist buying some stuff that I really didn't need. Just to quench my urge I bought some stuff and decided to have dinner with my friend. After we had dinner and went home I then realized that I bought some stuffs just excess and really not needed. I also realized I spent a lot more then I planned that night. Although I bought inexpensive stuffs when all these things add up it ended up becoming expensive. I really should learn to control my expenditure and save my money instead. The next time I get the urge to shop I will definitely stay away from the mall. Anyway has anyone of you ever experience this? What are your tactics in order to control you urges in spending?

Hi Kevin! We have the same experience, I used to spend too much money in buying foods. Whenever someone told me that the food in this place taste good I usually go there and check it out. I don't limit myself in buying foods that satisfy me, after all I am working to buy things that I want. But not anymore, I'm not getting younger and begging to gain wait. I don't want my waistline to reach my age... Hahahaha.... :D

I don't really go on a spending spree even if I am depressed. The only thought that keeps me from buying things I don't need is the idea of where I will put them once I buy them. I hate clutter and I am not the type of person who will buy something just because its cute. I buy things that are practical and I can use for a long time. This also makes me manage my salary better.

Hmm, seems like you have a lot of money huh? I mean there is a maximum amount of money that you can withdraw from the ATM in a day. I can say that is still a big amount of money. I can say, Im like you I am fond of buying inexpensive items but when you add up the cost of each it will still end up expensive but the quality is not very good at all. I learned that I really dont need a lot stuff what I need are important, quality products that works and last longer. Instead of buying a cheap perfume or cologne why not invest into a branded perfume that lasts longer, yes it is expensive but the scent lasts longer and there's no need for you to reinforce anymore because you still smell good the rest of the day. That is really saving a lot of money in the long run, plus a branded perfume is a plus right? Lets apply the same concept with buying clothes, I was so into clothes and dress before and in the end realized that I was only able to wear some of them twice thrice and finally gave them away after that.. I realized I have a lot and I sometimes forgot what clothes I have. But, If you buy branded and quality dress and clothes, you will surely remember them and will really treasure them. Because they are expensive you tend to buy one at a time or when you have saved enough money and will really treasure it. It wouldnt crowd your closet too much right. Just think about that and you will see the benefit in the long run.

Expenditure rises to meet the income. It is Parkinson's law. I would advice instead of thinking ways and means to earn more money one must control his expenditure first. Once he or she learns to control the expenditure then the thought of earning more money should come. Else, you might earn millions but that still won't be enough.

I strongly agree with you achilles, if you can't control a small amount of Money, then the more you can't handle a big amount of Money...Money management yes that should be the key...

First of all, we should think about the expenses as per our limits of earning. I always like to be careful. And i always like to save an extra amount of money suddenly if i need some money. I had planned to get a DELL laptop of about 600-800$ once. So, i started to save some $ about 80-100$ each of every months and at last i purchased after 6 months. It is a very good practice to save some $ for any urgent and necessary situations.

I agree that we need to curb unnecessary expenditure. i too get carried away sometimes and later feel that I should have restrained myself from spending on things that I could easily do without - I have seen some people who are able to budget and save perfectly each month .It is an art and some people have mastered it. I have not ,but I definitely would like to be able to do so...

Yes, I definitely have a big problem controlling my expenses. Whenever I get my salary I always act like a millionaire and spend spend spend until the 2nd or 3rd day before I get my salary again, I become so broke. I really want to control this problem.

Expenses versus Income... IN my own words Well Income is so hard to earn ,you need to devote time ,wit and perspiration to achieve abundant income...Expenses is so easy to earn because it denotes, the comfort of services, the luxury of comfort, all the wants...In order to control your Expenses make a budget...Put a percentage on each payables in your Income and that includes a percent for savings...MOst of our problem is that we can not control our wants,we like to have things that we already have,a bigger TV,a newer Ipod,Iphone,a branded clothes,an expensive dinner, travel all the new material things in this World...most of us focus on WANTS,AND LATER NEEDS.. IT IS SO HARD TO EARN MONEY,BUT IT IS SO EASY TO SPEND IT...CONTROL!BRO YOU are Lucky you still have excess for wants when you receive your salary, others really receive a very minimal amount, and they live by their means...

hmm.. though I do budgeting every now and then for my own family. I'm really having difficulties because the problem is not due to excessive shopping, it's because of insufficient funds haha. even though my husbands income is included in the budgeting(he was very transparent with it), we realized the need for earning extra income for the expenses especially now that our baby is going to be baptized and i suppose we are going to spend more than what we have right now. We were thinking of getting a personal loan, though it's still a debt, i think it will really solve the problem. we just have to pay for it as soon as possible!

I can suggest you the following 1. 3 days before pay day, make a list of the things that you need for the next 15 days. (for you to have time to trim down your expenses and add a new one that your really need) 2. Make it sure to leave your atm at home on the day that you can withdraw your salary, (the best excuse to avoid over spending is you didn't your atm with you) 3. Upon withdrawal make it sure that you buy ALL those in your list. ( this way you can avoid going back to the grocery to buy something that you have forgotten and make an additional spending) 4. Put away small amount (hide it in your bag, organizer pockets, closet in between clothes, and other places that you barely touch) You will sure be surprise to see money everywhere when you need it. 5. And lastly bring only the money that is enough for your to spend for a day. You can definitely avoid spending if you don't have too many money in your pocket. Hope that this will help you.
